On September 7, 1990, a proposition appeared on the ballots of the 1990 Bjeorg gubernatorial election asking the Bjeorgite electorate whether or not the province should seek independence from the Maximusian Republic. This proposition has come to be known as the Bjeorg independence referendum. Although a decisive majority of Bjeorgite voters indicated support for seeking independence, the referendum was subsequently ruled unconstitutional, as provinces have no legal right to secession. Despite the illegitimacy of the referendum, its results were later used by pro-independence politicians to justify violent revolt in the summer of 1991.
