The Monarchical Republic of Christos, commonly called Christos, is a nation located on the planet Terragon which resides in the Colonis Spatium Universe. Christos is best known internationally for its intelligent and kind populace, its spacious and diverse environment, its international acumen and influence, and its unique and delicious food. Christos has a diverse landscape ranging from oceans, waterways, deserts, plains, and mountain ranges. Christosians are well-known in the areas of technology and agriculture. Christos mirrors the culture of their mother country the United States of America but there are some major differences that make Christos unique.

In the NationStates universe Christos is part of the International Democratic Union region.

Etymology

The present name of the nation Christos is pronounced [Kris-tos], and is named after the founder of the nation King Chris. The standard way to refer to a citizen of Christos is "Christosian" [Kris-toe-si-an]. Before the name change and during the Empire Era the country was called The Chris Empire, it is pronounced [Kris Em-pie-er]. The citizens of The Chris Empire were referred as Christio Citizens, which is pronounced [Kris-Tee-Oh Sidizen].

History

The history of Christos can be divided into 3 eras: The Colonial Era, The Empire Era, The Republic Era.

The Great Ages Exploration and Colonization On August 1957 the space race between the United Sates and the Soviet Union began. During this period many technological advancements were made, which included sending the first satellite into space and sending the first humans to the moon. By April 1970 space exploration technology was perfected by the US. In August 1975 the technology was put to test with the landing of the first people on Mars. After the news of the successful Mars exploration, many of the other major nations (Britain, Soviet Union, France, and China) decided to start their own space programs and by the start of 1976 many exploration rocketships were launched. These initial explorations started the period known as the "Great Age of Exploration." The Great Age of Exploration stagnated soon after it started due to wars, conflicts, and diseases. It was not until 2008 when the Great Age of Exploration started again; though this time newly developed nations and other major nations joined in. In 2011 another scientific breakthrough was made with the invention of terraforming technology by the US. The US tested the terraforming technology with the founding of the first Mars Colony. The success of the Mars colony marked the transition from the Great Age of Exploration to the "Great Age of Colonization" with many other nations sending out rocketships to space to explore, terraform, and colonize.

The Colonial Era

Founding of Terragon Some time after the Great Age of Colonization the US sent another wave of explorers to space which was known as "Pilgrim Mission 20." One of the Captains on the mission was named Alfred Christian and his ship was named "Adventure Horizon." After many years of searching; Captain Christian and his crew located a planet that was not claimed by any other nation. Initial scans of the planet showed that it had the same atmosphere as Earth. This gave the crew of Adventure Horizon more time to explore and study the plants and wildlife of the planet. When the crew finally landed, Captain Christian claimed the planet for the US and named the planet Terragon after calling the planet the "paragon of all virgin lands." Alfred and his crew set up the first base, called Fort Discovery, and sent word to the US to send more people and supplies to the planet. In time, more people arrived, and the base grew into a colony, which was eventually named Virginiland after the "virgin" land the colony had settled on.

Virginiland's Government The US promoted Alfred Christian to Governor of Virginland. During his rule there was minimal interaction with the native tribes but a few misunderstandings and skirmishes led to a peace treaty being signed. In the treaty Virginiland promised to not encroach on other tribe's lands and that interaction between the natives and Virginilanders would be minimal. After 23 years of Governor Christian's rule he was succeeded by Jonas Siegfried. Under Governor Siegfried Virginiland prospered and grew. This growth led to the breaking of the treaty made with the surrounding native tribes before Siegfried's appointment. This led to more conflicts with the native tribes which also led to a mutual mistrust between the natives and the Virginiland government. Governor Siegfried ruled for 12 years until he was killed while leading the Virginiland military against a coalition of native tribes known as "The Brotherhood." In retaliation to the Governor's death the US appointed General Henry Wilson to Governor. Governor General Wilson was tasked to deal with the natives and to punish them for the death of Governor Siegfried. Governor General Wilson started a deadly conflict known as the "Native War of Supremacy," where many natives were imprisoned, killed, or exiled. The war not only affected the natives but also the citizens of Virginiland, who were friendlier to the natives than the government was. To stamp out sentiment for the native tribes Henry issued anti-association laws which severely damaged the government's relationship with its own citizens. This set off mass protests against the government and Henry. Feeling the pressure from the protesters the US relented and replaced Henry with a more lenient Governor named John Wanker, ending the 19 year rule of Henry. Even with the government change, talks of independence from the US government began rising.

Beginnings of a Revolution and The First Revolt During the later years of John Wanker's reign as Governor a Captain named Chris was assigned to Virginiland. Chris was assigned to patrol the waters around Virginiland. While patrolling the waters Chris came across the situations of both Virginilanders and the natives. He learned of the government's harsh rules and unfair treatment towards the natives and the Virginilanders. Appalled Chris decided to help by smuggling food and supplies to both the natives and Virginilanders in need and joined the "Independence Now" movement which was a group of Virginilanders calling for independence from the US. When the Virginiland government found out about Chris's membership he was demoted as Captain and fired from government. Chris sought exile in the very cities he visited while on patrol. There he was elected Mayor of three cities and was unofficially called "Governor Chris." Chris also established three more cities Christofton, Chris City, and Bluesville; while making Chris City his defacto capital and calling his territory Christos. Chris also formed an alliance with two native tribes, who were part of the Brotherhood, the Rune and the Daron. News of Chris's mayoral wins, city foundings, and native alliances reached the US government. The US government was furious with John Wanker's light response to the growing power of Chris that they fired John after 15 years of being Governor. The US replaced John with Jeffery Johnson. Jeffery Johnson was a patriotic soul from Maryland, US and wanted to align the Virigniland culture with the American culture. Jeffery did this with ferocity and quickness that many atrocities were committed. Those who disobeyed or went against these changes were imprisoned, tortured, rehabilitated, or executed. These actions gave Jeffery the nickname “The Steel Patriot.” Small skirmishes between the Virginiland military and the Christos military broke out which eventually turned into battles. Many supporters tried to flee the Virigniland for the Christos, but some were unsuccessful, leading to a travel ban between the two territories. Tensions came to a head during an event dubbed “The First Revolt.” Some soldiers of Virginiland were rounding up deserters in one of the roads leading out of the territory. Within minutes the round up turned into a gun fight as assailants jumped out of the nearby woods and killed the soldiers. When Jeffery Johnson heard about the incident, he sent a retaliation battalion to one of the outskirt cities that were known supporters of Chris and massacred the populace. Having learned of the massacre Chris declared war on Virginiland and the US and the War for Independence had started.

Christos War for Independence The War for Independence lasted for a brutal 5 years. In the end Christos was able to overthrow the Virginiland government and take over the Virginiland territory. To win the war for Independence Chris had to make sure certain criteria were met. First he sent a letter of recognition to the United Nations to establish Christos as a sovereign nation. This letter gave Christos the support it needed from the world, major nations like Great Britain, Russia, China, France, Canada, and Brazil supported independence for Christos. The next criteria was to gain the support of native tribes in Terragon. Chris had already signed a treaty with the Daron and the Rune tribes in the Brotherhood Alliance but he needed more. Chris was able to negotiate a treaty with 3 more native tribes which added more soldiers to his armies. The last criteria was to instill unrest within Virginiland's government so that a protests and riots would hinder the government's response to an attack by Christos. The war lasted for 2 years when on October 7 the US surrendered unconditionally; then on October 8 Christos formally declared independence.

A New Nation After winning the war for independence a Grand Convention was called at Chris City to decide the details of the new nation. During the Grand Convention many representatives threw their support to the idea of making Chris King of the new nation. Chris hesitantly accepted the title only if an elected official of the people was also put into power as well. To compromise the Convention made two offices one for the King and his subsequent heirs and the other would be for the President, and elected official by popular vote. These two offices of the Executive branch would work together. A bicameral Congress would also be established with one House being the Senate and the other house being the House of the Populous. During the Convention it was also decided that the year would reset on the crowning of Chris and the Year would be known as 0 AC (After Chris). In his Convention speech Chris said this "Today we start a new nation through the blood, sweat, and tears of oppressed people. Even though this nation has a King, my power and the power of the government comes from the people! We will stand together and turn this nation from a collection of people to an Empire, a Chris Empire!" Chris would be 50 years old when crowned King and while on his journey around Terragon he found "water of youth" which would extend his life. Chris reigned for 55 years until he decided to abdicate the throne to his eldest son Luke. During the abdication it was decided that Chris would keep the title King and a new title of Crown Prince would be bestowed upon Luke.
