David Alagalak left the Liberal Party in 2014, after policy disagreements. Ahead of the 2016 election, the PMP launched a campaign for Liberal Party voters in Port Nuiqsut and Bethel. The campaign was successful and was able to force a coalition with the Confederation Party. In 2020, the PMP was able to form a minority government with continued success in appealing to voters along the East Coast.
