The overthrow of the Khagan would lead to the creation of the People's Republic of Taragai on December 22nd, 1931. The Taragaian People's Revolutionary Front (TPRF), which had led the rebelling citizens, became the Taragaian People's Revolutionary Party (TPRP) and assumed control over the nation. He would also destroy numerous monasteries and churches, and was notorious for carrying out purges during his thirty-year rule of the country.

In January 2024, protests led by the reformist Democratic Front broke out demanding democracy in Taragai. The protests against the TPRP regime would lead to a severe crackdown ordered by Chairman Jirghogadai Tömörbataar. Led by Director of State Security Chaghagan Khoga, government forces arrested hundreds of protesters and attacked hundreds more in the capital, Bor-Öndör. Security forces would crack down in other cities as well. The Taragaian military intervened in February 2024 on behalf of the protesters. This led to Tömörbataar being overthrown by his deputy, Argasun Qorchi, in March 2024. Qorchi took over as Chairman, ended the crackdown, and began negotiations with the Democratic Front. This would lead to Taragai's first ever democratic elections in February 2025. Qorchi was elected as Taragai's President, and Democratic Front leader Khadagan Daldurkhan was chosen as Prime Minister.

Taragaian shamanism and Buddhism are still widely practiced, despite efforts by the communist government to repress religious practices. Most monasteries and churches have to operate underground, due to the closure of established facilities. The Taragaian government is believed to have forced the closure of at least 700 monasteries alone.

The Republic of Taragai is a state in the IDU. It borders Misumi, Lao Sangsong and Thousand Branches on the continent of Hesperida.

History[edit | edit source]

The area currently known as Taragai has been inhabited by nomadic peoples since ancient times. These peoples were united by Yesuongke Qoriqacha, the first great Khagan ("Khan of Khans"), in the year 93. The Taragaian Khanate built a great empire from neighboring territories until reaching its peak in 1636. During this time, it became notorious for raids conducted by its warriors into neighboring states. Taragaian horse warriors were widely feared for their skills in mounted combat, and their sheer ruthlessness. A common tactic by Taragaian raiders was to surround a city or fortress, and offer its inhabitants one chance to surrender. If that offer was not accepted, the settlement would be taken, razed to the ground and the people either killed or taken prisoner to serve the Khaganate.

Beginning in 1636, however, improvements in technology and combat skills in neighboring states would begin to blunt the fearsome advantage that the Taragaian raiders had enjoyed. By the year 1758, the reign of terror of the Taragaian Khagans had largely come to an end.

The Khagans would continue to rule over their existing empire for many years, however. The Khaganate would eventually transform into a feudal fiefdom. As time passed, the rulers of that fiefdom would exercise increasingly harsh control over their people. This would lead to a major upheaval in 1931, the Taragaian Civil War. For at least a decade prior to the civil war, communist propagandizers from Milintica had been spreading their ideology in Taragai. It rapidly found an eager audience in the thousands of oppressed peasants that labored under the reign of the Khagan and his dynasty. The Civil War began when a group of peasants, backed by disaffected soldiers, staged an uprising in the city of Khünbish on February 2nd, 1931. The initial uprising was followed by a rapid spread of defections among rank-and-file soldiers, leaving the Khagan powerless to stem the rebellion. The last Khagan of Taragai, Medekhgüi Qoriqacha, was finally overthrown on December 21st, 1931 when his own Keshig abandoned him.

The first Chairman of the TPRP, and leader of the People's Republic, was Megujin Ambaghai. Ambaghai was a former General in the Imperial Army who had defected to the communist side and eventually rose during the rebellion to lead the entire movement.

Ambaghai was as ruthless a leader, in his own way, as the Khagans before him. He would institute collectivization and attempt to stamp out the previously nomadic lifestyle of Taragaians.

Geography and climate[edit | edit source]

Taragai tends to experience hot summers and extremely cold winters. January temperatures, on average, can be as low as −30 °C (−22 °F). Taragai is a high and windy country, with its geography varying widely from the Chuluun Desert in the west to high plains and grassland leading into cold and mountainous regions in the rest of the country.

Religion[edit | edit source]

Taragaian shamanism and Buddhism are widely practiced, despite efforts by the former communist government to repress religious practices. The former Taragaian government is believed to have forced the closure of at least 700 monasteries alone. Since the elections of February 2025, the ban on organized religion has been lifted, and many monasteries and churches have begun to reopen.

Government and legal system[edit | edit source]

Taragai is a semi-presidential republic with a directly elected President who serves as head of state. The current President is Argasun Qorchi of the Taragaian People's Revolutionary Party. The President nominates a Prime Minister to serve as head of government, and the State Great Khural (Taragai's legislature) approves the nomination. The current Prime Minister is Khadagan Daldurkhan of the Democratic Front of Taragai.

The State Great Khural is made up of 76 members who are elected in the same election as the President, in a unicameral legislature. Elections are held every four years.
