The Director of the Sanctarian Intelligence Service serves as the head of the Sanctarian Intelligence Service (SIS), which is part of the Sanctarian intelligence community. The current Director is Kathryn Stewart, who assumed control of the agency on 01 March 2024. The Director is appointed by the Secretary for Foreign Affairs, to whom she reports directly, and is confirmed by the Sanctarian Senate. Regular reports are also made to the Chancellor of Sanctaria upon request.

The Director is appointed for a five year term, which is renewable.[1] Once nominated by the Foreign Secretary, the nominee must be confirmed by the Senate of Sanctaria, either in an open or closed-door session. The Director regularly reports to Parliament on the actions of the SIS and is ultimately responsible for the service.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The position of the Director of the Sanctarian Intelligence Service was created in 1976, when foreign service diplomat Edmund Dawson was asked to head up a new office with the Department of Foreign Affairs responsible for the analysis of diplomatic cables and informal intelligence picked up by diplomats abroad. The existence of the SIS was not originally confirmed until a 1988 freedom of information request required the Department of Foreign Affairs to indicate what the "special operations office" in government budget allocations was responsible for.

The following year, legislation retroactively established the Sanctarian Intelligence Service and limited the Director to a term length of five years, though governments have the option to renew this as often as they require.

Nominees for the position have been required to be approved by the Senate since 2013. In 2014, Alexandra Maye was appointed as the service's first female director.
