Sherfield is the fifth largest city in the Kingdom of Legionas and the second largest city in the Nerland Region, behind Verdesia.

Sherfield played a crucial role in the Industrial Revolution, with many significant inventions and technologies developed in the city. In the late 18th and early 19th century, the city saw a huge expansion of its traditional logging trade, when stainless steel and crucible steel were developed locally thanks to discovery of large iron, coal, and silver deposits on the outskirts of the city, fueling an almost tenfold increase in the population. The city was considered one of the most inhospitable areas in the Kingdom of Legionas for a significant part of the Industrial Revolution, forcing the King to enact a series of infrastructure projects in the area to increase the city's livability. Sherfield received its municipal charter in 1901, becoming the City of Sherfield in 1947. International competition in iron, steel and coal caused a decline in these industries in the 1970s and 1980s, coinciding with the collapse of silver mining in the area. The city was hit hard by Black Thursday, forcing the government to sustain the city with a series of development grants, and increased government spending in the area.

The city has seen extensive redevelopment and modernization, along with other Legionite cities, in the 21st century. It saw a significant shift away from mining industries, although they do still play a large part in Sherfield's economic output, in favor of other industries such as automobile manufacturing, robotics, scientific endeavors such as biotechnology, genomics and epidemiology, with the city containing the continent's largest medical research facility. These have led to a 84% increase in the city's GVA.

The city has a long sporting heritage and is home to both the world's oldest football club, Sherfield F.C, and the world's oldest football ground, Trammern Ground. Games between the two professional clubs, Sherfield United and Sherfield City, are known as the Derby of the Mines. The city is also home to the World Darts Championship and the Caxcanan Snooker Championship. Sherfield was chosen as the city to host the Caxcanan Union of Football Associations headquarters in 1984. Sherfield's rich sporting heritage and its citizens' sporting fervor has led to it being called the "Sports Capital of Legionas".
