When [[Habemus papam|the name of the new pope is announced]], update {{tl|Incumbent pope}}  to <code><nowiki>[[Pope <papal name>|<papal name>]]</nowiki></code> and {{tl|Incumbent pope 2}} to <code><nowiki>[[Pope <papal name>|Pope <papal name>]]</nowiki></code>. The Roman-numeral regnal number, if present, should be preceded with a non-breaking space (<code>&amp;nbsp;</code>) in the piped-link text, as per the guideline at [[MOS:NBSP]].
