===Forestry===
Old-growth forests are exceedingly rare in Laeral due to centuries of human forest cultivation, including pre-colonial and colonial-era forest management. During the colonial era, "scientific forestry" was introduced according to the Daryan model. Intended to produce more reliable and easily-managed timber yields, this process included the replacement of diverse forest landscapes with monocultures of foreign timber trees, with negative consequences for ecosystem diversity and resilience to pests and natural disasters. Subsequent forest management efforts dating to the 1950s and onwards have sought to restore diverse forest environments, yet forest cover remains a small portion of land area in continental Laeral. Xueyan, by contrast, has extensive old-growth forests, many of which are protected from development by the National Wilderness system. The Xianhai Peninsula also holds old-growth forests due to differing development patterns.
