In late July of 1961, a Daryan attack fleet was observed conducting live-fire drills in international waters roughly three hundred nautical miles south-west from [[Bjeorg island|Bjeorg]]. The fleet contained transport ships and amphibious landing craft. Preparing for the worst, Libertas Omnium Maximus conducted a massive draft on August 1, compelling a quarter of a million into service. The next day, Darya declared total war, citing "continued Maximusian military aggrandizement and aggression." The Maximusian first fleet, commanded by Admiral Brandon Pickney, was dispatched to meet the Daryans as they advanced into the Maximusian exclusive economic zone. 

Launching from the [[MS Bastion|''MS Bastion'']], Maximusian fighters attempted to slow the Daryan incursion and disable transport ships, but the small, underequipped air wings were quickly repelled. Counterattacking with dive bombers of their own, the Daryans forced the Maximusians to retreat under heavy fire. On October 5, another bomber attack disabled the ''Bastion'' and several other ships, leaving some of the southernmost [[Prince Frederick Islands|Maximusian outlying islands]] vulnerable to attack by Daryan marines. An isle south of Bjeorg, Bluegill Cove, capitulated to the Daryans on October 10, granting the Empire a foothold in the Maximusian southern archipelago.
