===National Parks===
Laeral's national park system preserves lands in a semi-wild state for tourism and recreation. The national parks were established in 1930 as bourgeois desires for natural conservation aligned with the revolutionary government's desire to promote recreational travel and hunting for the industrial working class. During the mid-20th century, national parks were frequently subject to development for state-run tourism resorts and rest homes (the ''Loisirs nationaux'' system), clashing with the conception of national parks as intended for preservation of undeveloped wilderness. In 1977, many national parks which had experienced extensive recreational development were redesignated as National Recreation Areas, while the remainder retained their designation as National Parks and were kept in an state of nature. National Monuments, smaller preservation areas centered on particular natural features, were established subsequently, as were National Wildernesses, nature preserves in Xueyan Special Administrative Region designated for preservation with some administration authorities delegated to indigenous authorities. National Maritime Parks, preserving marine areas, were first created in 1991 as the most recent addition to the national park system. The national park system is administered by the National Park Directorate, at the Interior Ministry.
