The post was created during the Unification of Lauchenoiria. The first President, Liam Sutherland, was elected by the Parliaments of the various provinces, with further Presidents being elected by the people of Lauchenoiria until the [[Lauchenoirian Communist Revolution]]. After the Communist takeover, the President was appointed by the [[Communist Party (Lauchenoiria)|Communist Party]] until 1993 when the system reverted to democratic elections.

During the Communist period, the President had far greater powers, with the position of [[Prime Minister of Lauchenoiria|Prime Minister]] being abolished, and the President serving as both Head of State and Head of Government. In 1993, following the return of democracy and the legalisation of pro-capitalist political parties, the duties of the President once more became largely ceremonial.
