Passed: Repeal "citizen Rule Required"
#1

Original Proposal: http://www.nationstates.net/51550/page=UN_...lutions/start=7

Category: Repeal
Resolution: #8
Proposed by: Dankism

Description: UN Resolution #8: Citizen Rule Required (Category: The Furtherment of Democracy; Strength: Strong) shall be struck out and rendered null and void.

Argument: The United Nations,

COMMENDING the democratic intentions of Resolution #8, ?Citizen Rule Required,?

NOTING that not all U.N. nations wish to be democratic,

FURTHER NOTING that Resolution #8, ?Citizen Rule Required,? claims that citizen rule promotes ?international peace,? which is not always true,

UNDERSTANDING that Resolution #8 fails to define which position the declaration for "citizen rule" applies to, making the resolution vague and ineffectual,

CONSIDERING that Resolution #8 does not adequately define ?rouge nations,? nor how citizen rule deters said ?rouge nations,?

ALSO CONSIDERING that Resolution #8 condemns certain governments, such as anarchies and dictatorships,

UPHOLDING that it is outside the mandate of this body to condemn specific political systems,

BELIEVING that member nations should decide on their own form of government at local, regional, and national levels,

REPEALS Resolution #8 ?Citizen Rule Required.?

Bah. It's useless. I don't care. Against.

Here tis:
Quote: Citizen Rule Required

A resolution to increase democratic freedoms.

Category: The Furtherment of Democracy
Strength: Strong
Proposed by: Aschen

Description: This is a resolution to require all nations to grant self-rule to all citizen on some level. Local, Regional, or National is no matter, just so long that all citizens have some say and control over the way they are governed.

These measures would promote international peace and serve as a deterent to the formation of so called "rouge nations" that to this day threaten all nations.

Votes Against: 7233

Implemented: Fri Apr 4 2003[/quote]
I agree with Ceorana on this. I don't care.

The original resolution has only one effect: creating the concept of a rouge nation. Since that concept is much better preserved in the unrepealable repeal, I am FOR.

I think we should have at least one resolution in place that we can point to and say "that's not what we want". And I like the "rouge nations" typo.

I also like democracy. Against the repeal.

[Adminstuff: changed yes/no to for/against, which is clearer. No votes were harmed in the proces]

I've always liked that resolution as a way of educating new players as to how to find and exploit loopholes.

Against the repeal.

Thank you, Groot. I don't really know what I was thinking when I wrote Yes and No...

I added a link to the original proposal at the top.

While I can understand why the proponents of repeal dislike the writing style, it does represent a principle that I agree with. Unless and until there is a replacement in place that requires at least as much as this resolution, I won't support repeal.

Against.

Against.....

Thank you Franxico for putting the orginal resolution up.

Hmmm. A tough one. I am opposed in principle to all badly worded resolutions, but without an adequate replacement in place, the net effect will still be damage to fundamental rights. So, I guess in the end I must oppose.

So, if I wanted to have "Citizen Rule" in my rouge nation, all I would need to do is let them decide, say, the colour the trim on the city hall would be... or create a citizen council I don't have to listen to... wot da bloody 'ell is wrong with dat?

Besides, isn't an anarchy in a way the perfect citizen rule?

Useless repeal. Against.

Edit: Why do I always end up on so many second pages with my first posts... *sigh*

While I'm normally a "support the principle" type of person (and I do support the principle of the original resolution), the text of Resolution #8 may be one of the worst I've ever seen.

Therefore, I'm supporting the Rouge Nation of Charlotenberg, er I mean, Fonzoland and voting for the repeal.

Fonzoedit: Yey, I am UN Crew now! I can now mess with other people's posts and fix results. Oh, the power... .

Mikitivity is planning on abstaining from voting on this repeal. The resolution is nothing that my government strongly supports, but at the same time (besides our opinion that it is not written in the format we like) it doesn't really impact the people of Mikitivity much.

Ceo gets to vote on this one, so I get my opinion back Smile

I'll vote against. It doesn't do anything anyway, might as well keep it. No matter how embarrassing it is.

Well, it isn't the first time this region has opposed a repeal (on grounds of wanting a substantive replacement in place first) and it won't be the last.

Speaking of which, we may yet need to revisit the famous repeal of the resolution protecting dolphins. Turns out dolphins use names for one another when they whisle to each other and they apparently like to gossip about other dolphins by name!
