PASSED: Repeal "World Heritage List"

Quote: Repeal "World Heritage List"

A proposal to repeal a previously passed resolution

Category: Repeal

Resolution: #37

Proposed by: Kivistan UN Bordello

Description: UN Resolution #37: World Heritage List (Category: Environmental; Industry Affected: Woodchipping) shall be struck out and rendered null and void.

Argument: The United Nations

COMMENDING the effort of UNR#37 (The World Heritage List) to protect the global environment;

DISMAYED that UNR#37 fails to stipulate how to classify locations as being of environmental significance;

DISTRAUGHT that there is no system by which the World Heritage List is to be maintained;

CONCERNED that UNR#37 does not specify what protective measures are to be taken, and by whom;

LAMENTS that UNR#37, despite its mention environmentally damaging activities, is narrowly targetted at only the woodchipping industry;

SEEKING an opportunity to pass more effective legislation in replacement;

HEREBY REPEALS UNR#37 The World Heritage List.

Votes Against: 426

OK, maybe a worthwhile repeal but has anyone seen discussion of the replacement? Is it possible to write a resolution that says repeals must come with a replacement so we can vote on them as a package? Think about it, there are plenty of nations that would use the lag time to completely reverse even the weak specifics of resolutions that go unreplaced.

Personally I think it's easier to cut down a resolution than it is to create one. That's why I think they should be connected. In the case where the resolution should be repealed without replacement they would have to state that and people could decide if they want to leave it open or not. As it is now, we repeal because a better one SHOULD be written but while that time passes we go from weak guidance to no guidance on the subject. Sounds like a flaw in the system to me.

The original is extremely basic, so I think it could just be added on to by another resolution. Couldn't another resolution be written clarifying that one?

Initially, I vote AGAINST, but I'm kind of on the fence.

OOC: If there is a desire to repeal but also a wish for replacement, perhaps the IDU could work on the latter?

There's already an attempt at a replacement, although I've heard rumors that it won't actually be submitted. If it doesn't, that'd be a good project.

And I am very much FOR the repeal of this hideous legislation...

Once a regional body is set up, that may be a project that the IDU can work on, finding what repealed resolutions should be replaced, and then developing a series of proposals to submit to the UN to in fact, place.

This ongoing project someone has going to repeal virtually every UN resolution ever passed is reaching the point of rediculousness.

I agree, I think someone needs to start replacing some of these repeals. Some repeals even say "please replace" messages at the bottom, and they still aren't.

And who better than the IDU? Smile

So, I may just abstain on this one, or maybe vote for. If we are serious about starting a board to selectively replace some resolutions, it will be closer to for. I'm just starting to dislike all repeals in general...

This resolution really does positive harm - it allows for nations to put others on the list to kill their economies, and there's no way to get off it.

Probably the last thing I wanted to read. I saw the rough copy of the replacing resolution, and thought it was quite good. I had planned to vote for this repeal, Now im undecided at the moment. If I don't get some reassuring news about the replacement, I will probably vote against.

Please have your votes in this poll recorded by Sunday night. (I will cast the vote late Sunday evening after the airing of the latest episode of The Amazing Race in the eastern time zone of the US.)

You can always write your own replacement, Gnejs. I wouldn't oppose because of that.

My government was the no vote, but we do hope that a *better* replacement is made. There is an effort to replace the resolution on the UN forums and we'd invite nations to visit that forum to participate in those discussions.

We feel that should this resolution be repealed, that we should make a regional protected cultural sites listing, that *we* could maintain.

I like this idea! Especially as we non-UN nations could also take part in it.

That's actually a really good idea!

We agree with Mikitivity. This resolution, though written with good intentions, isn't suited to the attention span of the wider NSWorld.

If that group wants to call us a bunch of "tree hugging hippies," that's their business.

Won't stop a replacement.

No, that's not what I meant by the link. It was just the author's confirmation that he most likely won't be submitting the advertised replacement.
