The Harmonious Academy of World Students

Welcome to The Harmonious Academy of World Students, or THAWS! THAWS is a brand new, state-of-the-art boarding school located in Murdarbe Province, Eiria. This location allows students to access both the famous forests of Murdarbe Province and the stunning beaches of Northeastern Eiria, providing suitable recreation and relaxation opportunities for its students. THAWS is close enough to local cities to make urban excursions easy, and yet far enough from these areas to maintain a tranquil, calming environment. In addition, students at THAWS will be able to gain university credit from their studies, both through local colleges and the Eirian High Rigor Course Program. 

This will be the first academic year ever held at THAWS, and as such, the initial class will be a smaller class of 16 and 17 year olds, carefully selected by their home nations from among the best (or perhaps richest) students.

A very quiet and reserved person, Ms Wright is often found tucked away in a quiet corner of the library reading, and will hasten to end any distraction to that end. Her academic aptitude for mathematics and the sciences is only tempered by the speed at which she can absorb new material.

How was this student selected for THAWS?: As the Novella Islands' state of Xeles' selection for THAWS, Ms Wright was selected after multiple rounds of independent interviews and testing, conducted by the civil servants within both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Education. Perhaps the most competitive of all states' selection process (due in no small part to being both the most populous state, and the state with all major national institutions), she is quite possibly the finest young mind in the Novella Islands, at least of those who applied for the position. It was her first-place victory in the Junior Physics Olympiad the previous year that pushed her application just slightly above the next applicant.

Basic Description: Male, 16 years old, average height with an athletic build, brown eyes, short black hair. An avid chess aficionado, and no doubt a future diplomat or politician, his mastery of public debate is renown amongst his peers. Were it not for his cocky attitude, he might even have been universally respected by the student body. Nonetheless, even if many pupils subsequently despise him, they cannot refute his brilliance in literature, oratory, and the social sciences.

How was this student selected for THAWS?: Selected by Hathon's independent panel of civil servants from the same ministries, Mr Clarke had no easier time earning the right to attend. While Hathon's population is decidedly smaller than Xeles', the state still holds many national institutions, and is very often seen as 'Xeles Minor'. It was his placing second in the Novella Islands Chess Olympiad - while a personal disappointment, given his aim of a first-place victory - pushed his application to top of the pile.

Basic Description: Male, 55 years old, rather short and stout build, crystal blue eyes (often wearing glasses), short dark brown hair. As is typical of most Novellans, Dr Cartwright is a man with a rather humourless, curt, and efficient exterior; those who get to know him better, however, are well aware of his warmth, and his childlike excitement on topics of science (and especially, physics). A veritable expert on science education, students under his tutorage have gone on to become preeminent scientists within their fields, in their own right, thanks in no small part due to his unmatched ability to convey complex topics to laypeople. If it weren't for his passion for hands-on teaching, he'd probably be in office by now - either as a principal, or in parliament - but THAWS will settle for department head of the sciences!

Basic Description: Female, 42 years old, tall with an average build, forest green eyes, long blonde hair. Once again, as with many Novellans, Ms Oxford is a rather stern teacher at first glance. Earning a reputation as "The Taskmaster" at her previous schools, she is ceaseless in her instruction, riding the students from the moment they enter her classroom, right to the very moment the period bell ends. To her credit, one cannot deny the results: her former pupils rank among the highest scoring mathematics scores in the Novella Islands, and in retrospect, many of them thank her for her efforts.

Basic Description: Female, average height with a slight build, pale skin, long dark hair and brown eyes.  She is very reserved and measured with her speech and can come across as bookish at times.  A fierce competitor who strives to win every competition she enters, no matter how insignificant.  At her prep school, the most prestigious school in Suyang, she was national finalist in her event through the Business Club and a national qualifier in her speech event, so she is no stranger to hard bargaining and negotiation technique.  Also, are those clothes designer?!
How was this student selected for THAWS?: She had the 6th highest exam score in the nation, and due to years of training the interviews were a breeze.  Her mother is Min Ji-min, the chairwoman of the Seollim Group, Haesan's largest corporation, which definitely had nothing to do with her selection.  While Isabelle is eminently qualified for THAWS, that has not stopped public outrage (but she's used to this by now).

Basic Description: Male, average height with an average build, tan skin, short dark hair cut in an athletic style, and brown eyes.  Mental toughness is the attribute that most defines Moussef, having immigrated with his father from Serriel at a young age.  Even as a young child, he would often find odd jobs to work in his community, and his entrepreneurial spirit and creative intelligence have driven his academic success and led him to become a pillar of his community.  Family is the most important thing to him and remittances from his father's work in the Bridgeport docks and his odd jobs helped pay for his mother and sister to reunite with them ten years ago.  He sees THAWS as a way to make it in the highly meritocratic Haesanite society and give back to his parents who sacrificed so much for him.
How was this student selected for THAWS?: He had the 2nd highest exam score in the nation, and his family-oriented story really resonated with the selection committee.

Basic Description: Female, short with an average build, short black hair, 52.  The Government of Haesan would not allow THAWS to be accredited unless they knew someone competent, and Haesanite, was running the show from behind the scenes.  The former Deputy Minister of Education, who is being heavily compensated for her time in Eiria, knows how to manage an educational system, and ensure academic excellence.  She helped revamp the prep school system throughout the early 2000s and her conceptualization of flexible but regimented structure is a pillar of the Haesanite education system.  She's either students' favorite or most dreaded teacher.
