Election coverage: Libertas Omnium Maximus

Brown wins re-election, legislative branch sees major shift

In the recent elections in Libertas Omnium Maximus, President Lucas Brown has won re-election. Maximusian conservatives, however, have lost a significant amount of ground in the legislature to the Progressives. This likely indicates that a more unified left will be able to form in the coming years.

The Party of Freedom suffered a massive electoral defeat, losing all of their seats in both houses to the Christian Union, which is the largest it has ever been. The socialist party also lost a significant number of seats to the Progressives.

Olivia Pierre kidnapping

Nations demand answers, Maximusian government yet to respond

After a video claiming to be released by an unknown Maximusian group showing the daughter of Kerlian Councillor Pauline Pierre being held captive and threatened, the Council of Kerlile accused the Maximusians of contravening the Haven Accords, and demanded her immediate release.

The video, which showed Olivia Pierre being held captive, has caused the Kerlian government to call for an international investigation into the kidnapping. The Council also called for signatories to the Haven Accords, and other nations, to impose economic sanctions or other penalties on Libertas Omnium Maximus until such time as Olivia Pierre is released. The Maximusian government has yet to respond to the accusations.

The government of Milintica also condemned the kidnapping, with both President Matōchmizalo and Prime Minister Tupai Tapihana calling for immediate action in response to the kidnapping.

Invasion launched by loyalist Xiomeran forces, allies

City of Zapotlán site of amphibious assault

A massive amphibious assault on the Xiomeran city of Zapotlán has begun, led by forces under the command of Crown Prince Texōccoatl.

The assault began in the early morning hours, led by the expeditionary brigade attached to the Xiomeran First Fleet, which has sided with loyalist forces. The expeditionary brigade has secured the landing site while under heavy fire from Imperial forces defending the city and its strategic location between western and eastern Xiomera.

A large force, composed of Xiomeran, Milintican, Kerlian, Legionite and Eirian soldiers, has begun landing while still taking heavy fire from the Imperial shore defenses. At least one Xiomeran warship is reportedly sinking after being struck by a missile.

We will bring further coverage of this operation as it unfolds.

What they're saying:

Crown Prince Texōccoatl, just before the assault began: "Today, the liberation of Xiomera begins. Today, thousands of Xiomerans, along with our Kerlian, Legionite and Eirian allies, are beginning the first step on a road that inevitably leads to Tlālacuetztla and to ultimate victory and the freeing of our country from the rule of a brutal usurper. We will not stop until final victory is achieved and all our people freed.[/box]

Emperor Xochiuhue, in a statement from the Palace of Flowers: "The puppet Texōccoatl, led on his leash by his foreign masters, has brought war to our shores. At the bidding of outsiders, he has started a civil war in Xiomera. We will be the ones to finish it. I call on all Xiomerans to stand up and repel this foreign invasion, and defend our motherland. We will do anything and everything necessary to crush this flagrant violation of Xiomeran sovereignty and this plot by the Legionites, Eirians and Kerlians to bring the Xiomeran Empire under their control. Victory and glory to the Xiomeran Empire!"

Xiomeran civil war

Editorial: World is being deceived in Xiomera

The international community, in its eagerness to live out a classic "good guys versus bad guys" fantasy, has seized upon the deposed Empress Yauhmi, her son Crown Prince Texōccoatl, and his wife and young son as the saviors of Xiomera in the unfolding of the civil war there. It admittedly paints a picture straight out of a heroic epic: the determined, tortured Empress, her rogue-ishly handsome son, and his equally photogenic and appealing family, fighting for their country and their people. Facing down a villain so evil, it's like he was dragged straight out of the plot of a movie: the brutal, crude Emperor Xochiuhue, the product of a palace coup and a military plot. It all sounds wonderful, and it has the world flocking to support the Empress as she tries to regain her throne. The governments of Milintica, Eiria, Legionas and Kerlile have come running to back Yauhmi, heroically putting their own people on the line.

It's a great story. But like all carefully crafted fairy tales, it's a false narrative.

Before being so quick to embrace Yauhmi and her family as the saviors of my people, the world would be wise to take a closer look at these self-appointed saviors. Yauhmi became Empress after a farcical and undemocratic selection process, after being the wife of the previous Emperor for decades. The previous Emperor, her husband, Topilpopoca, was himself a brutal tyrant. He may have not been as bad as Xochiuhue (or, for that matter, Xochiuhue's father, who Topilpopoca succeeded on the Obsidian Throne), but that is faint praise. Topilpopoca's regime tortured people, kept political prisoners by the thousands, and relentlessly repressed the poor and democratic activists in Xiomera for twenty long years. Does the world truly think Yauhmi, his closest companion all that time, had no idea what her husband was doing? Or, for that matter, that she stopped any of that once she herself became Empress?

Yauhmi suffered greatly at the hands of her torturers, and I wish that pain upon no one. But one could well call it karma. Yauhmi helped uphold for decades the very same Xiomeran system that turned on her, and then tried to kill her. Should we still feel as sorry for her, that the machine of her own creation, that benefited her for so long, turned on its master as such machines always do?

Even if we look past the flaws of the Empress, her son, the Crown Prince, is no better. Texōccoatl paints himself as a brave noble Xiomeran, in the mold of the ancient warriors of our history. He flashes his military background as much as he does his famous smile. He is also adept at using his wife and child as props. Standing next to him, they look like an ideal royal family in the making: young, attractive, noble, brave. Again, it's like they were cast for the role by some movie studio. This is no coincidence: the Xiomeran system has grown very good at portraying its leaders as better than they are after six centuries of oppression and tyranny. But Texōccoatl is the son of Topilpopoca, just like Xochiuhue is the son of Xolōtl. Both the sons of brutal tyrants. Why should anyone believe that Texōccoatl is a savior and Xochiuhue a villain, when they both spring from the same odious backgrounds? His wife, the Crown Princess Tlalmaxxi, is herself a former ASI agent - a member of the same secret police that are brutalizing Xiomeran civilians now. Is she a hero?

Yauhmi, Texōccoatl and the rest of their family are products of the same system that created Xochiuhue, and others like him. Yauhmi, Texōccoatl and his family are no better than that system. As products of the evil system that has oppressed democratic-minded Xiomerans and the members of ethnic minorities, and the poor, why does the world believe that Yauhmi and her son will do any better if they are placed back in power? This is a bet that several IDU nations are now making with their own treasure, blood and lives. And it's a bet for suckers.

If the nations in question insist on placing Yauhmi back on the Obsidian Throne, the people of Huenya demand the following:

1) We demand that the Xiomeran Empire come to an end. It is a nation built on six centuries' worth of oppression, ethnic supremacy, the suppression of the poor, and violence. It cannot be "reformed" or "fixed". The only thing that will fix the Xiomeran Empire is putting a stake through its vampire heart.

2) All nations, especially the ones supporting the Empress, must ensure - by force if necessary - that Yauhmi keeps her promises of political reform and civil rights.

The lives that have already been lost in this war, both Huenyan and foreign, demand no less. So do the lives of those who will still be alive after the war is over.

The preceding was an editorial by Topoyotli, a professor of history and political science from the Imperial University of Manayuca, who is currently in exile in Lauchenoiria due to his being charged with treason by the government of Emperor Xochiuhue.

Xiomeran civil war

Emperor declares "state of war" exists, orders general mobilization
Loyalist government dismisses Xochiuhue's call, urges Xiomerans to switch sides

Emperor Xochiuhue leaves the XIN broadcast center after his announcement to the nation

In a speech broadcast from the Palace of Flowers, Emperor Xochiuhue accused the governments of Kerlile, Eiria and Legionas of "launching an undeclared war" against the Xiomeran Empire. The Emperor announced that "as of today, a state of war exists between these nations and the Xiomeran Empire" and ordered a general mobilization of all Xiomeran active-duty and reserve forces. The Emperor has also ordered Xiomeran arsenals to arm civilian militias loyal to his government, preparing to send them to the front lines to boost his forces. Xiomeran defense officials confirmed that a major redeployment of Xiomeran forces will take place to stop any further advances at Zapotlán, where an allied force has begun securing the strategically vital link between western and eastern Xiomera.

"These foreign powers, under the guise of supporting their puppet regime and the figureheads of the senile Yauhmi and the corrupt Texōccoatl, are attempting to seize on this moment of struggle and difficulty for our Empire. They think we are in a moment of weakness, and that they can take advantage of that effort to their own gain. We shall prove them wrong. Xiomerans are at their strongest when they are facing adversity. We shall push these foreign invaders back from our shores, and then we will crush the seditionist puppet movement that they are backing," the Emperor declared. The Emperor ended his speech by urging Xiomerans to unite and join his government to resist what he labeled "an act of unparalled foreign aggression against our people."

In Chuaztlapoc, the loyalist government of Empress Yauhmi announced that they have made Chuaztlapoc the "temporary capital" of Xiomera, and began raising pressure on Xiomeran soldiers to switch sides. Where the loyalist government had previously made appeals of a more subtle nature, recent statements from Chuaztlapoc have begun to warn the Xiomeran armed forces, as well as civilians loyal to Xochiuhue, that there is "no possible way" Xochiuhue can win - and that there will be consequences after his government falls for those who fail to switch sides. "Don't tie your future to that of a doomed man," propaganda messages from Chuaztlapoc have said directly to Imperial troops. The loyalist government has also dismissed Xochiuhue's call for a general mobilization, instead demanding that Xiomeran forces halt all offensive actions and begin accepting orders from Chuaztlapoc.

Massive uprising reported in western Xiomera

Reports have emerged of a massive uprising currently taking place in western Xiomera, in what appears to be a further setback for the government of Emperor Xochiuhue.

DTNS reporters have received reports that the uprising began on the morning of September 28th, after prisoners in recently established "public safety" camps in the Necatli region began attacking their guards and seizing control of the facilities. Reports indicate that three of the seven camps in the Necatli region have been totally taken over by their former prisoners, with several guards taken captive and others fleeing the facilities. Unrest appears to be spreading to several other camps in various parts of Xiomera as well. There have also been reports that three camps in the Itotemoc region have been "liberated" by armed forces loyal to the government of Empress Yauhmi.

The controversial "public safety" camps were established by the government of Emperor Xochiuhue in response to opposition to the military coup that placed him in power. Originally begun in the Necatli region, "public safety" camps were later established in the rest of the Xiomeran Empire, ostensibly to detain "terrorists". Opposition leaders and foreign observers have accused the government of Emperor Xochiuhue of using the camps for the mass detention, punishment and torture of protesters, opposition members, ethnic minorities and loyalists to the deposed Empress.

Drug raid near Kvask border nets seven arrests

As reported in the Lauchenoirian Guardian, seven Lauchenoirian citizens have been arrested by the Lauchenoirian Drug Enforcement Agency on drug smuggling charges after a raid on a property two miles west of the Kvaskm border. Lauchenorian officials believe that those arrested had recently returned to Lauchenoiria over the border with a large quantity of illegal drugs.

The seven members of the smuggling gang have been remanded in custody pending trial due to previous convictions and the likelihood of fleeing to Kvask if bailed. A provisional date for the trial has been set for October 17th, and Lauchenoirian officials indicate that more arrests are likely.

Pro-drug legalization groups held demonstrations in Usera and Liaville following news of the arrests.

Maximusian officials deny involvement in Pierre kidnapping

In a brief statement, the government of Libertas Omnium Maximus has denied any involvement in the recent kidnapping of Olivia Pierre, the daughter of Councillor Pauline Pierre of Kerlile. The Maximusian government has also denied any knowledge of who may be behind the kidnapping.

The brief statement read as follows: "The Maximusian government unequivocally denies having any hand in the kidnapping of Olivia Pierre. It was obviously a set-up by hostile foreign agents or non-state actors. We are actively investigating the event and are committed to recovering Pierre and bringing the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice."

No further elaboration on the matter has yet been issued by the Maximusian government, but Maximusian officials indicated that further action is expected at a later time.

The diplomatic row between Kerlile and Libertas Omnium Maximus was sparked by the release of a video by an unknown Maximusian group showing Olivia Pierre being held captive and threatened. In response, the Council of Kerlile accused the Maximusians of contravening the Haven Accords, and has called for sanctions.

Diplomatic row over drug smuggling intensifies

Lauchenoirian police after concluding a drug raid

The diplomatic row over drug smuggling conducted by a Kvask-based smuggling group has intensified, with the governments of Lauchenoiria and Kerlile trading accusations over the matter.

After a recent series of raids in Lauchenoiria aimed at curtailing drug smuggling, the Lauchenoirian government accused Kerlile of providing the smugglers from Kvask a safe haven in return for access to illicit and contraband items, in an effort to evade sanctions levied on Kerlile after the Second Lauchenoirian Civil War. Lauchenoirian Foreign Minister Sandra Pavía made a statement to Lauchenoirian reporters that the Lauchenoirian government had warned Kerlile that its actions related to the Union of Merchants were "simply unacceptable". Pavía then made an accusation on social media claiming that the Council of Kerlile was engaging in “wilful ignorance” on the smuggling issue. Pavía accused the Kerlian government of deliberately ignoring smuggling in order for Council families to have access to goods and products to evade sanctions. The Foreign Minister's words were followed up by a speech from Prime Minister Josephine Alvarez in the Lauchenoirian Federal Parliament, warning that those who do not cooperate with the Lauchenoirian government's investigation into the Union of Merchants may face unspecified “consequences”.

Councillor Electra Georgiou released a public statement on behalf of the Kerlian government denying the Lauchenoirian accusations and stating that Kerlile is continuing investigations into Kvaskm smuggling operations in their country. While the Kerlian Border Patrol Agency has claimed that there has been a sharp reduction in smuggling to the country, foreign observers have noted that Kerlian government funding for anti-smuggling operations has steadily decreased since 2012 and that no smugglers have been arrested in Kerlile since 2019.

What is the Union of Merchants?
The Union of Merchants is a Kvask-based smuggling organization which is known for sales of illicit products in a number of nations. The organization's activities are considered a criminal enterprise in a number of nations.

A new nation emerges in the IDU
Netlcoātl Islands declare independence in further disintegration of Xiomeran Empire

Ahuac, new leader of the Netlcoātl Islands

In a shock announcement which observers fear could lead to further instability in eastern Caxcana, the Netlcoātl Islands have declared their independence as the Xiomeran Empire continues to disintegrate further into civil war.

After forcing Imperial troops to abandon the islands, Ahuac, the son of the former leader of the islands Itzamatul, has taken over as the new leader of the government there. In a brief speech to the media, Ahuac stated that the Netlcoātl Islands have declared themselves to be "the newest nation of the IDU." He further warned that the islanders would resist "any attempt by Xiomerans or their allies" to force the islands to return to Xiomeran authority. A new government is in the process of being formed by the islanders, with temporary leaders to be appointed followed by proposed elections in April 2021, Ahuac stated.

Reaction to the surprise announcement has been mixed. Most nations, as of yet, have not recognized the Netlcoātl Islands as an independent state. The government of Milintica, however, did announce that it will be sending a diplomatic delegation to the islands' capital, Citlamina, to meet with Ahuac and the provisional Netlcoātl Islands government. Milintica's Representative Assembly has reportedly approved a proposal to begin the process of recognizing the Netlcoātl Islands as a sovereign nation and exchange ambassadors. Some observers warn that this may cause friction between Milintica and the loyalist Xiomeran government under Empress Yauhmi. The two governments are currently allies in the attempt to overthrow the government of Emperor Xochiuhue, and observers have warned that Milintican recognition of the Netlcoātl Islands' independence could cause a fracture in the coalition against Xochiuhue's regime.

As of yet, neither Empress Yauhmi nor anyone in her loyalist government have addressed the declaration of the Netlcoātl Islanders or their future status in Xiomera. However, Emperor Xochiuhue's government issued a statement declaring the independence move by the islanders "null and void before the ink even dried on it" and asserted its right to "re-establish the legitimate authority of the Xiomeran Empire" over the islands at a later time. When advised of this statement from the Emperor, the response by Ahuac was succinct: "Come and try."

Why are the Netlcoātl Islands important?
The Netlcoātl Islands are a small island chain between Legionas and Xiomera. They occupy a strategic location between the Aegir Sea and the Nereus Sea, and also sit in the path of vital shipping lanes. The islands, along with the Zarmesa Islands, were a source of border disputes and tension between Legionas and Xiomera for many years before a final resolution of their status. Observers warn that a change in the status of the Netlcoātl Islands could cause further border disputes or unrest in eastern Caxcana.

Emperor Xochiuhue deposed in another coup

Security head takes over in more turmoil in Xiomera

Calhualyana speaking to the Xiomeran public

In a short announcement from the Palace of Flowers today, the head of Xiomera's security forces announced that Emperor Xochiuhue has been deposed, and that she will be taking over as the nation's new leader "until such time as a more formal selection process can be undertaken."

Calhualyana, previously the country's Secretary of Security, declared that the Xiomeran security forces and armed forces had invoked Article 14 of Xiomera's laws of succession to remove Emperor Xochiuhue due to "mental incapacity." She further declared that a new provisional government had chosen her as the new Empress of Xiomera for the foreseeable future, to replace the deposed Xochiuhue. Article 14 of the Xiuhtonal, the lengthy document that outlines Xiomera's complicated selection process for its rulers, grants the Xiomeran military and security forces the power to remove the ruler under "circumstances of extreme emergency, in which there is not sufficient time to convene a Great Selection to replace the Emperor or Empress." It is unclear what circumstances led to Xochiuhue's removal under this Article. The new Empress did not elaborate on the exact reasons for Xochiuhue's removal, alluding only to the extreme difficulties and unrest that Xiomera has faced since the coup that deposed Xochiuhue's predecessor, Yauhmi, earlier this year.

The new Empress announced that many of the draconian restrictions imposed by Xochiuhue, such as prison camps for dissenters, curfews, and checkpoints, will be discontinued. The new Empress also announced that she is willing to open talks with the supporters of the former Empress, Yauhmi, in an attempt to find a negotiated solution to the civil war that broke out in Xiomera after the coup.

From their "temporary capital" in Chuaztlapoc, the government of Empress Yauhmi would not commit to joining any talks; a spokesperson for her government said only that they will "consult with all of our allies before agreeing to anything" and reaffirming their belief that Yauhmi is the only true and legitimate ruler of Xiomera.

Regional news: Maraix

Court session to determine island's fate

A court session in the National High Court of Laeral scheduled for November 10th will determine the fate of Maraix, an overseas territory of Laeral in the Tenebric Ocean.

The court case began in 2018, when residents of Maraix attempted to file incorporation documents with the provincial court in Laeralsford. The Maraix residents refused to pay the required taxes and fees, asserting that they were not actually Laeralite citizens due to new DNA research casting doubt on the longstanding belief that the island's founder, Tom Morrison, was a citizen of what was then the colony of High Fells. When the provincial court rejected their application due to the unpaid fees and taxes, the Maraix residents appealed to the National High Court.

The Maraix residents cite recent research conducted by the Maw Island Research Group at Bayview University in Legionas, which triggered DNA testing which they state confirms that Morrison was not, in fact, a subject of High Fells. This new evidence, according to the Maraix residents, renders Laeral's claim to the territory invalid. The Maraix residents have stated that they hope the court decision will confirm their status as an independent state. Observers have noted that if Maraix does follow through with independence, the island will likely lose the equivalent of $3 million standard dollars in Laeralian marks in benefits they receive annually from Laeral. This, however, has not deterred the independence movement on the island.

If the National High Court upholds the island's case, Maraix will become the second new nation emerging in the IDU in the past month. The Netlcoātl Islands, a territory of the Xiomeran Empire, declared their independence on October 5th.

Fast Facts about Maraix:

- Originally known as Maw Island, the community was founded after it was settled by escapees from the royal prison in High Fells in 1788. It was founded by Tom Morrison, the youngest member of the group of fugitives.
- Maraix (then the Maw Island territory) was briefly mentioned in the 1855 Treaty of Meilun, which transferred ownership of the Territory from High Fells to the First Allied Provinces of Laeral.
- The island was the scene of violence during the 1970s and 1980s after it was sold to a cartel leader. After the cartel leader was arrested, his wife took over, eventually selling the island in 2015 to a group consisting of the original island residents and condo owners.
- The island is currently administered by a homeowners' association and land trust; their attempt to incorporate led to the current court case.[/box]

Fleming escapes from Lauchenoirian prison

Gabriel Fleming, a former agent of the Lauchenoirian Intelligence Agency, has escaped from a high-security prison where he was being held on charges of treason, murder and mistreatment of prisoners. The Lauchenoirian government has refused to provide the full details of Fleming's alleged crimes, citing national security reasons. However, there are claims that Fleming was a supporter of Suleman Chaher’s coup in 2018, and that Fleming or pro-Chaher groups may intend to attempt another coup.

Security services have been placed on high alert following the escape. Border patrols have been increased, and security around the Parliament has been increased as well. There is also now additional security outside the residences of both the President and Prime Minister. The government has denied that this is a result of Fleming’s escape and that they are responding to the increased threat of civil disobedience from activist groups such as Watchdogs of Our Earth (WOE). However, this claim is considered suspect due to the timing of the security increase, which came immediately after the Fleming escape and months after protests by activists began.

Unverified documents were leaked online following the escape which imply that Fleming was responsible for a number of online rumors surrounding Yauhmi, the deposed Empress of Xiomera and leader of one faction in the present civil war there. The rumors, which alleged that Yauhmi had cheated on her husband, the then-Emperor Topilpopoca, were vehemently denied by the Xiomeran royal family and led to threats from both Yauhmi and her son, Crown Prince Texōccoatl, to "find and punish" whoever was responsible for the rumors.

Lauchenoirian authorities have warned that Fleming is extremely dangerous, and that only law enforcement or security personnel should attempt to apprehend him.

Xiomeran government lifts sanctions

Calhualyana addressing the media at a shutdown factory in Huaxtumba

The new contender for the Xiomeran throne, Calhualyana, announced today that her government will be unilaterally lifting sanctions against several nations imposed by her predecessor, the deposed Emperor Xochiuhue.

The self-declared Empress Calhualyana annouced that she has ordered the lifting of sanctions imposed on Laeral, Kerlile, Legionas, Eiria and Milintica after those countries imposed their own sanctions in the wake of the coup against the sitting Empress, Yauhmi, by Xochiuhue. There are no conditions being imposed by the Xiomerans, meaning that even if those countries keep their sanctions in place, Xiomera will still lift their retaliatory sanctions.

Calhualyana made her announcement at a factory in the city of Huaxtumba which had been under construction prior to sanctions. The tumbling Xiomeran economy post-sanctions had caused the factory construction to be halted, and the Empress used that as a backdrop to urge other nations "to end a self-destructive trade war which has only hurt the economies of the IDU, as well as everyday Xiomerans."

"As a sign of good faith tied to our offer to open peace talks and negotiations on the future of Xiomera, we are taking this unilateral step to end our sanctions regime. This factory, which should be full of the everyday activity of workers, sits silent for no reason. Let's get Xiomera working again, and let's work together to end this unnecessary crisis for the benefit of all IDU economies and nations," Calhualyana said in her press conference.

Speaking from their base in Chuaztlapoc, the rival government of Empress Yauhmi urged foreign governments "to not be misled by this putative gesture of goodwill by a ususper regime."

"The usurper government is only taking this step to make themselves look good, and to try to resurrect the Xiomeran economy which they killed with their coup, and eliminate the pressure of sanctions and thus make it easier for them to stay in power. We urge the nations of the IDU to not be deceived," a spokesperson for Yauhmi said.

Center to left parties rise, Conservatives drop in Marin polling

In the legislative election polls in Marin state, significant shifts have been observed in the polling of political parties since the 2017 elections.

A poll conducted by DataPrax/the Lakewood Journal has the center-left party Renew Sunemia polling at 19%, a 7% increase over their 2017 numbers. The poll also has another center-left party, the Liberal Democrats, at 48% (an increase of 8% over their 2017 numbers). The more left-wing Progress party polled at 18%, which reflects no change from 2017.

The major shift has been in the fortunes of the right-wing Conservative Front party, which has seen a 15% drop in their polling from 2017 in Marin and currently sits at 14%. The significant drop has been attributed to a rightward shift in the party, as well as the decision by popular Conservative Front governor Davis Riversadi to not seek re-election in 2017.

In war-torn Xiomera, a somber day to honor the dead

A mother and daughter pay tribute to deceased ancestors at a cemetery in Tlālacuetztla

November 1st, the beginning of celebrations in Xiomera centered around the queen of the underworld Mictecacihuatl and honoring those who have passed away, are normally happy celebrations. They are seen as a way for family members and friends of all generations, both alive and deceased, to be together as one. The entire country normally engages in huge and elaborate celebrations, parties, events and parades to honor this sacred milestone in Xiomeran religion and history.

This year, however, few Xiomerans are feeling like celebrating. The coup and civil war that have dragged on in the country for almost seven months now have dimmed the festive mood of Xiomerans, who are dealing with the very real sorrow of thousands dead, injured and imprisoned on both the Xiomeran side and that of the emerging separatist state of Huenya. In addition, both the war and sanctions have left many Xiomerans feeling economic hurt as well, further dimming the celebratory fervor.

"Nothing feels right to celebrate right now," Miahitlaco, a woman who we interviewed paying tribute to her deceased father at a cemetery in Tlālacuetztla, said somberly as she lit candles and laid marigold flowers at his grave. Her father, a lieutenant in the Xiomeran Imperial Army, was killed during recent fighting in the city of Zapotlán. "Everyone we know has lost someone recently. The entire country seems to be broken," she said. Despite a speech today by the new Xiomeran Empress, Calhualyana, promising an end to the war, Miahitlaco is not optimistic. "Most people we know aren't working right now. The industries are restarting, but slowly. A lot of people are worried about their future. And with so many people losing someone recently....everything is just sad."

---

On the other side of the stalemate at what was once the city of Zapotlán, in the rapidly emerging state of Huenya, the mood is also grim. Never as prosperous as their eastern counterparts in historic Xiomera to begin with, and having borne the brunt of the fighting during the war, the people in the former western territories of the Xiomeran Empire are finding even less to celebrate.

"The entire situation is just horrible," Anchac, an Itotemoc man living in the regional capital of Ixtenco, said as he walked with his wife and son to a temple. Anchac has not worked for three months, and has also lost both friends and family members to the fighting that occurred in the Itotemoc region before the current stalemate. While he will be going back to work soon, Anchac is anything but optimistic. "The only thing that will bring us real peace of mind is if the leaders that are fighting come to some kind of compromise, and they don't seem to want to do that." The speech given by Huacue, the Necatli leader, today speaking on behalf of the separatist government, did not reassure Anchac or his family. "All it seems the leaders want right now is war and more war," his wife, Chimbi, said. "We just want it all to stop."

Arriving at their local temple to join the other people arriving to pay tribute, Anchac shook his head. "I just hope the people in charge find a way to come to terms with each other, or there will be a lot more people we have to pay our respects to next year."

The governments of Sunemia and Laeral announced today that they have signed a free trade agreement, as well as an agreement allowing for free movement between the two nations. Sunemia has also established diplomatic relations with Laeral, and opened an embassy there.

President Liu Mei-han of Laeral issued this statement: "Fostering commercial and social ties with our friends in Sunemia offers both nations the opportunity to pursue the path of joint progress and sustainable economic prosperity as we advance into the future. It's my pleasure to sign this agreement and usher in a new era of mutual cooperation and international exchange between the Allied Provinces of Laeral and the United Republic of Sunemia."

President Chris Fairhax of Sunemia has also issued a statement: ''Sunemia is proud to foster diplomatic relations with Laeral. This agreement will benefit both nations and foster cooperation and prosperity.''

Economic experts believe that the agreement will improve regional economies and could lead to other nations pursuing free trade agreements and expanding freedom of movement. "With regional economies, especially in Caxcana, suffering blowback from the Xiomeran civil war and the trade war related to that, the pressure is on to find ways to revive regional trade," Rachel Couch, an economist with the think tank Renaissance Theory, told DTNS. "Nations will very likely be seeking ways to facilitate improved trade and international relations as a way to counter issues stemming from the Xiomera problem."

Slokais Islands presidential elections

Chavez comes under fire

A major scandal has erupted in the upcoming elections in the Slokais Islands, with National Alliance presidential candidate Joseph Chavez being accused of both irregularities in political donations and of refusing to support a child that he allegedly fathered in 2007.

As reported in the New Liverpool Daily, after a Freedom of Political Information Act request, it was discovered that the Sun Corporation, the largest company in the Slokais Islands, may have structured political donations to Chavez to skirt campaign finance laws. Under Slokais Islands law, a single donation must be less than 10,000 Marks and the company had four donations of 9,999 Marks. Liu Sun, the CEO of the Sun Corporation, said that the reason they donated was that Chavez used to work at SunMart in the late 90s. In a statement the Chavez campaign said that "Mr. Chavez worked at SunMart to pay for college and the Sun Corporation approached us and said they wanted to give back to an old employee."

In another allegation leveled against Chavez, a woman named Emma Hereswhin has alleged that Joseph Chavez fathered a child with her in 2007 and never paid any childcare or child support. The New Liverpool Daily was unable to fully confirm this allegation, and many have pointed out that Hereswhin is a member of the rival New Right party. Seizing on the allegations, New Right presidential candidate Micheal Spencer said at a rally that "not only is Chavez a liar, but he is also a child abuser and bad husband." The Chavez campaign has, so far, not commented on these latest allegations.

Xiomeran civil war

Despite peace talks offer, Xiomera launches major offensive

Despite a recent offer of peace talks, the Xiomeran Empire has launched a major new military offensive in the region of Xiomera known as Quechtli, or the Neck of Huenya, and the city of Zapotlán.

In the early morning hours today, Imperial military forces launched a massive counter-strike, with several mechanized divisions backed by artillery, missile fire and air support. Huenyan forces appear to be in disarray and in retreat back to the city of Zapotlán.

In a short statement from the Palace of Flowers, General Zinahue, commanding the Imperial military, said that the offensive was "meant to regain control over what are indisputably Xiomeran lands" around the Intra-Xiomera Canal and Zapotlán. The offensive will end at the historic border between Xiomeran lands and those of the neighboring Tepiltzin tribe to the west, the General said, and added that the fighting "need not continue if the separatists simply relinquish control over historically Xiomeran lands they are currently occupying." The General added that the Xiomeran Empire "remains fully committed to peace talks after we have regained control over what is indisputably our territory."

There has been no public statement as of yet from the separatist government of Huenya, and observers have reported that there appears to be panic about the offensive in the separatist capital of Chuaztlapoc.

DTNS asked military expert Benjamin Hughes about what the motivation for the Xiomeran offensive may be. "It is highly likely that the Xiomeran government, heading into potential peace talks which may carve off half their Empire, want to regain as much territory as possible to emerge as strong as possible after a potential partition of their lands. Also, there is a nationalist component to it - Xiomerans in general, and their new leader Calhualyana in particular, are very proud and nationalist in nature. The territory in question is historically Xiomeran, and they won't want to part with it for that reason."

Hughes added that economics also is playing a role: "The Intra-Xiomera Canal handles two-thirds of the trade between the Tenebric Ocean and the South Xiomeran Sea. It is a hugely valuable trade resource, and neither the Xiomerans nor the Huenyans are likely to part with it without a fight."

Regional news: Sunemia

Upcoming elections: Osaina

In Osaina, the Progress Party has dominated in the past, with a multiracial coalition. However, with populism surging in Osaina, Progress is holding an extremely narrow minority government with 36 seats, versus the Conservative Front with 34 seats. The biggest race is in District 19, where incumbent Lin Markwood, a progressive icon who was the presidential candidate for Progress on 2018 and the chair of the Progress Coalition, the national organization for the Progress Party. But District 19 is changing. The Conservative Front won it 52.8% to 47.2% in 2018 in the second round of voting. The Conservative Front of Osaina is heavily targeting Markwood, but experts note that pro-incumbent sentiment is very strong in Osaina.

Regional news: Maraix

Maraix wins legal bid for independence in Laeral's High Court

Marking a capstone to a lengthy legal battle, the people of Maraix have triumphed in their bid for independence from Laeral, after a ruling in that country's National High Court.

The National High Court in Laeral ruled that it does not have jurisdiction over Maraix, rendering this decision: “Though the Municipal and Provincial courts handled civil filings related to the sale of the Maw Island, the establishing of land trust encompassing Maw Island its surrounding territory, and the incorporation of the HOA, the High Court recognizes that it did not actually have the jurisdictional authority to do so. Further, the High Court cannot rule on the contents of the CCC&R, as the documents must be filed in a court holding jurisdiction over the matter. It stands to reason, based on the evidence and documentation provided, that no court in Laeral holds this jurisdiction.”

In a statement issued to residents of Maraix, the president of the island's association, Karen Kreider, said that the ruling means that "Laeral recognizes it doesn’t have jurisdiction over the island, as it agrees our historic founder was neither a French citizen nor native to High Fells."

With Laeral's High Court seeming to confirm that Maraix does not fall under their jurisdiction, and the government of President Liu Mei-han also seeming disinclined to contest the issue, the residents of Maraix are celebrating their joining the ranks of the IDU as its newest nation-state.

Series: The changing face of Huenya

A house divided, Huenya diverges on two different paths

Despite a major military offensive taking place against the occupied city of Zapotlán, in which Xiomeran and Iskirami forces have brought Huenyan and allied forces under siege, the civil war in Xiomera seems likely to end not on the battlefield, but at the negotiating table. Both sides have agreed to talks hosted by the government of Laeral in the city of Jinyu. The future of what was once the Xiomeran Empire seems likely to be determined by discussions by two utterly opposed sides, as a clear divide is emerging.

In the western lands of what was once the Empire, a radically different state from its predecessor is rapidly emerging. Now dubbing itself the Huenyan Federation, the separatist state in the west seems increasingly determined to rid itself of any vestige of the old Xiomeran state. The physical and obvious symbols of the fallen Empire - flags, signs, statues, and such - are reaching landfills in the new Huenya at a dizzying pace. The reformed security forces, now dubbed the Federation Armed Forces and Federation Police, are already beginning to sport new uniforms and insignia. Institutions named after figures from the Imperial past are undergoing name changes at a rapid pace. Freed from centuries of Xiomeran supremacy, the people of the western half of Huenya are not wasting any time dispensing with the symbols of their past rulers.

The former Xiomeran Empress, Yauhmi, has dropped the title of Empress, now calling herself the Cihuātlahtoāni - the historic title of female rulers, one that was translated as "empress" when Xiomera adopted Western terms to describe its Empire and its rulers. Shedding both the ideology of the Xiomeran Empire, and the trappings of empire as a whole, Yauhmi has chosen to fall back on the original meaning of her title - Great Speaker. Her son Texōccoatl, abandoning the title of Crown Prince, is now calling himself the Cihuacōātl - a historic title of someone who was deputy to the ruler. While the titles have reverted to ancient ones, it doesn't appear that the plan for Texōccoatl to succeed Yauhmi as ruler has changed.

What has changed is that the Cihuātlahtoāni no longer rules alone. A Huenyan Assembly, made up of the leaders of all of the Huenyan tribes, now calls the shots along with Yauhmi. Their impact is already making itself felt. Once planned to be an empire similar to Xiomera, the Huenyan state is now rapidly moving along the path to becoming a federated state, with substantial autonomy for each region and a much greater helping of democracy than previously expected. Huenyan leaders are even floating the topic of possible elections once the issue of the pesky civil war is concluded.

What remains at question is whether or not what is left of the Xiomeran Empire will join Huenya on its path towards a more equal and democratic future. Xiomera itself, reduced to a rump state in the east of Huenya, and now having given up Manauia Island as well, shows no signs of giving in. Along with her new military offensive, the ruler of Xiomera, Calhualyana - who has no qualms about continuing to use the title Empress - has been taking measures to boost her support within Xiomera. While Xiomera still censors the media, DTNS reporters have managed to obtain reports of massive arrests, led by the Xiomeran secret police ASI, rounding up both supporters of the deposed Emperor Xochiuhue and anyone still supporting Yauhmi, as well as any dissenters in general. Xiomeran media campaigns are now encouraging Xiomeran citizens to report anything, or anyone, they deem suspicious or anti-Xiomeran to the government.

The new Xiomeran Empress has also embarked on a massive campaign to boost her standing among the Xiomeran people to go with the massive arrests. Her government recently announced that it was reintroducing the social security system that had been offered under Yauhmi, only with a catch. Renamed the "Loyal Citizen Support Fund", the social security system will grant monthly stipends to all Xiomerans provided that they have a high enough "social credit score", a national reputation system which will use multiple factors to assess a Xiomeran's loyalty to their Empire. The message being reinforced by the power of Imperial quetzals is that Xiomerans who are sufficiently loyal will be rewarded - and the disloyal, not.

Along with the suddenly free-flowing largesse from the new Empress, a campaign to completely discredit the old one is underway. Throughout Xiomeran cities, Calhualyana has been giving speeches denouncing Yauhmi as someone who abandoned Xiomera, split it in half to form an entirely new country, and threw her own people under the bus. Where she was once loved as a reformer, Yauhmi is now being labeled as a traitor. While public opinion in Xiomera is notoriously difficult to gauge, especially from the outside, it appears that the anti-Yauhmi campaign is gaining at least some steam. Support for Yauhmi within Xiomera itself, which had plunged following her announcement that she was disavowing the Obsidian Throne, appears to be even lower now. The rapidly progressing "de-Xiomeranizing" of the west has also angered many people in what is left of the Empire, as it is seen as a direct attack on their traditions.

Calhualyana has been using this to her advantage, presenting herself as someone who loves Xiomera and wants to preserve it. The new Empress has also been promising to raise Xiomera to even greater heights than before, even if she has to dispense with half of the old Empire to do so. In a nation that has suffered from both civil war and a battered economy, her promise of future glories has a seductive and dangerous appeal.

As the two sides of Huenya, one still defiantly Xiomeran and the other just as defiantly opposed to everything Xiomera stands for, continue to diverge down two separate and widening paths, it is unclear what possible agreement they can come to in Jinyu. The negotiators there will have a major task ahead of them.

Series of terrorist attacks rocks Slokais Islands, Eiria

A series of terrorist attacks has hit the Slokais Islands and Eiria.

The first attack occurred in Geminus, the Eirian capital, and targeted the Slokais Islands embassy located in the city's 4th District. Eirian officials reported that a remote explosive device was detonated in the Embassy bathrooms, causing severe damage. Twenty-five people were killed in the blast, and thirty more injured. The Eirian terrorist group TALFL claimed "partial responsibility" for the attack, though they did not identify their co-conspirators or explain why they had targeted the embassy of the Slokais Islands. The Slokais Island Bureau of Investigation, the New Liverpool Police, the Geminus Municipal Police, and the Solar Guard Counterterrorism Taskforce are investigating the attack on the embassy.

After the attack in Geminus, multiple attacks struck the Slokais Islands. In Provincetown, a hotel in the city was attacked by terrorists who killed Robert Von Mark, a defense contractor for the Slokasian government. In New Liverpool, a terrorist stabbed a police officer and was then arrested as he entered the Embassy District to attack the Eirian embassy there.

In Kaijan City, a major bridge in the city was destroyed by an explosion, and part of the city's convention center was also heavily damaged. During the attack on the convention center, the terrorists have reportedly taken Ambassador Tom Yu of Laeral as a hostage, along with other officials. The terrorists there have reportedly demanded huge ransoms for the Ambassador and the other officials to be released, and has threatened to kill them if a rescue attempt is made or their demands not met within 14 days.

A state of emergency has been declared, with citizens being urged to stay home.

Eusebio Ramos, a counter-terrorism expert with the think tank Renaissance Theory, told DTNS that a pro-Kaijan independence group of some sort is most likely behind the attacks. "Kaijan Island has always been a restive part of the Slokais Islands, with an armed insurrection occurring there from 2007 to 2011. It is highly likely that these latest attacks are related to all of that," Ramos said.

Sunemian elections: Progressives roll, mostly, on a strong election night

Results from the Sunemian legislative elections on November 18th, 2020:

In Osaina state, the Progress Party was able to retain control of the government, flipping four seats to their side. They now hold 40 seats, just enough for the majority. One shocker was the race involving progressive icon Mark Linwood. Linwood was narrowly defeated in his re-election bid for the seat in his conservative-leaning district. The Progress Party should still be able to pass their desired legislative agenda, as fellow liberal/progressive parties the Liberal Democrats and Renew Sunemia hold 40 seats and one seat respectively. The party has announced that passing legislation giving everyone in the state broadband access will be a priority, as Osaina state lags behind the rest of Sunemia in this regard.

Seat count in Osaina:
Progress: 40 (+5 flips,-1 loss)
Conservative Front: 29 (-6 losses, +1 flips)
Liberal Democrats: 10 (+1 flips)
Renew Sunemia: 1 (0)

In Stanford state, the Liberal Democrats picked up six seats. Renew Sunemia gained one as well. Liberal Democrat Jennifer Maswell will continue as First Minister. The Liberal Democrats have continued to maintain their strong showing in this state, which has a major presence from both the Sunemian tech industry and the education sector as well.

Seat count in Stanford:
Liberal Democrats: 56 (+6)
Conservative Front: 27 (-7)
Progress: 19 (0)
Renew Sunemia (+1)

In Nashana state, the Liberal Democrats made huge gains among the suburbs of Nashai and Floiris, ousting several incumbents and gaining themselves a majority. The priorities for the new Liberal Democratic majority will be increasing funding for hospitals and health centers, as well as passing ranked-choice voting. The new majority also wants to create a High Tech Park to boost jobs. Voters in the Nashai suburbs swung towards the Liberal Democrats in part due to the party's support for increased healthcare funding, a popular proposal in an area dependent on jobs in the healthcare industry.

Seat count in Nashana:
Liberal Democrats: 54 (+10)
Conservative Front: 28 (-11)
Progress: 22 (+1)
Renew Sunemia: 2 (0)

In Marin state, the progressive parties continued to roll, due to the gains among the fast-growing suburbs of Lakewood. The Liberal Democrats gained 7 seats and Renew Sunemia gained two. The Liberal/Renew Sunemia government will continue prioritizing their climate agenda, with the goal of making Marin a carbon-zero state between 2027 and 2032.

Seat count in Marin:
Liberal Democrats: 47 (+7)
Conservative Front: 26 (-9)
Progress: 7 (0)
Renew Sunemia: 5 (+2)

In Beldes state, the Conservative Front found its one bright spot of election night by retaining control of government here. Experts said this was due to their dominance in the exurbs and suburbs of Gallei, the major city of the state.

Seat count in Beldes:
Conservative Front: 76 (-2)
Liberal Democrats: 12 (+2)
Progress: 2 (0)

Xiomeran government to put former Emperor on trial

The government of the Xiomeran Empire announced today that the former Emperor Xochiuhue will be placed on public trial, beginning on December 1st, 2020, in the nation's capital.

Cuicanan, Xiomeran Secretary of Justice, announced that the former Emperor will be facing a mammoth list of accusations numbering in the hundreds of charges. Among them, he is facing charges of abuse of power, treason, anti-Xiomeran conduct, and several hundred charges of murder, manslaughter and assault related to the violent suppression of protests around Xiomera during his brief reign.

The former Emperor also stands accused of engineering a plot to kidnap Olivia Pierre, the daughter of Kerlian Councillor Pauline Pierre. The former Emperor reportedly ordered the kidnapping of Pierre as part of a scheme to place blame on the government of Libertas Omnium Maximus, in an attempt to distract Kerlile from its involvement in the Xiomeran civil war. In a brief statement, Empress Calhualyana apologized to both the Kerlian and Maximusian governments for Xochiuhue's actions, and said that the Xiomeran government is "fully committed" to ensuring that the former Emperor faces justice for his actions.

In another slate of charges, the former Emperor is accused of demanding that his military commanders launch nuclear strikes against the separatist Huenyan government, as well as nations allied with it, in an attempt to salvage his deteriorating position in the civil conflict in Xiomera. Xiomeran officials confirmed today that it was this "heinous and immoral order" which forced the hand of Calhualyana, then Security Secretary for the Xiomeran Empire, and led to the coup that removed Xochiuhue from power. "Our new Empress acted to save both Xiomera, and the world, from a nuclear catastrophe," the Secretary of Justice said.

Attorneys for the former Emperor have already stated that they intend to pursue an insanity defense for the former Emperor, citing both the plot involving Olivia Pierre and his alleged order to launch nuclear weapons as proof of his mental condition. His attorneys have also cited the original order issued by Calhualyana, which stated that she was removing Xochiuhue due to mental incapacity under Article 14 of the Xiomeran laws of succession, as proof that the former Emperor should be found innocent by reason of mental illness. However, Secretary Cuicanan said that his prosecutorial team "will clearly and fully demonstrate" that the former Emperor was not insane, but "a cruel and murderous ruler who was fully aware of what he was doing."

The trial is expected to be televised as well as shown live online.

DTNS reporters have been able to speak with Xiomeran citizens in several cities around Xiomera, and have reported that most Xiomerans are "in a state of shock" as the full extent of the allegations against the former Emperor is beginning to emerge. "He would have destroyed us all," Apalquetl, a pastry chef in the city of Tequixquiac, told one DTNS reporter. "We knew he was a cruel ruler, but none of us imagined it was this bad."

Xomotli, a computer programmer in the city of Huacoyoaco, told reporters this: "Xochiuhue would have led our Empire, and the world, to utter destruction. We are fortunate that Calhualyana intervened before it was too late, and I am confident that our new Empress will ensure that he faces justice."

Netlcoātl Islands begins expelling Xiomerans

The separatist government in the former Xiomeran territory of the Netlcoātl Islands has confirmed reports that it has begun expelling those of Xiomeran ethnicity from the islands.

Ahuac, the new leader of the Netlcoātl Islands, has ordered that all those of Xiomeran ethnicity must depart the islands no later than midnight on November 28th, 2020. Any who refuse, or have not left by that date, will be forcibly expelled from the islands, the islands' provisional government declared in an official statement. "Xiomerans oppressed us and siphoned off our wealth to send back to Tlālacuetztla for centuries. We will reclaim what is ours from their tyranny," the statement read.

Reaction from the other governments involved in the civil conflict in Huenya has been mixed. The government of the Huenyan Federation has issued a statement acknowledging that the islanders have reason to be angry, but should "direct their anger at the Xiomeran government, not at innocent civilians." The Huenyan government has sent a negotiator to try to convince the islanders to halt the expulsions. Many Xiomeran refugees from the islands have been crossing the strait that separates the islands from Huenya, and the new Huenyan government is reportedly having trouble handling the sudden surge in crossings. Officials in the Necatli region, which borders the Netlcoātl Islands and is seeing the highest surge in border crossings, have expressed the greatest frustration. The mayor of Acalan, Alluchi, told a DTNS reporter that he "didn't even want the Xiomerans that were already here, and now we have to take in the ones that the islanders are kicking out, and it's not fair." The leader of the Necatli region, Huacue, told DTNS that he remains committed to helping those in need, and has reportedly reprimanded the mayor of Acalan for his comments.

Meanwhile, in Tlālacuetztla, the government of the Xiomeran Empire warned that "Xiomera will take action in response" if its nationals are harmed or threatened by the islanders, and repeated its call for the international community to make sure that Xiomerans in lands that the Empire is ceding control of are protected by any successor governments. Empress Calhualyana has announced that if Xiomerans in the Netlcoātl Islands are harmed, or forcibly deprived of their wealth and possessions, that the Empire will take actions "beginning with sanctions" and escalating from there if necessary. The Xiomeran government had previously managed to negotiate a withdrawal from Manauia Island that included guarantees for the safety of Xiomerans remaining on the island, but the Netlcoātl Islands has rejected any negotiations whatsoever with the Xiomeran government.

Milintica spearheads new alliance with former Xiomeran territories

The new governments of the Netlcoātl Islands and Manauia Island announced that they have begun discussions with the Milintican government to form a cooperative trade and diplomatic alliance. The new alliance has labeled itself the Alliance of Non-Aligned Nations (ANN).

"The purpose of this agreement will be to ensure that smaller, developing and emerging states in Caxcana are able to help each other. It is no secret that the larger powers of the world can bring great power to bear in influencing, or even forcing, smaller states or poorer ones to follow a certain path. By banding together and leveraging our strength both in numbers and in ideas, we can make sure that our nations are able to retain their independence and their voice on the world stage," President Matōchmizalo of Milintica announced in a statement from Haven House, the presidential residence. While the ANN will consist initially of these three nations, the Milintican leader said that they would be open to accepting other nations that may be interested and meet the ANN criteria of being a non-aligned, smaller or developing state.

The new political alignment is expected to first make its presence known in the upcoming talks in Jinyu, Laeral to end the civil conflict in Xiomera. The three members have reportedly agreed to push the international community to recognize the independence of both the Netlcoātl Islands and Manauia Island, and also to place "boundaries" on the Xiomeran Empire to ensure that it does not attempt to regain control over any of its former territories.

Newly independent Maraix appoints new diplomats

Having recently gained its independence from Laeral, Maraix has named "honorary" diplomatic representation to three nations, according to an announcement by Association President Karen Kreider.

Auguste Kerouac has been named Honorary Ambassador to Legionas; he will be based in Bayview. Perpetua Toafa-Efu has been named Honorary Consul to Legionas, and will be based on North Indigo Island.

Chad Kreider, the son of the President, has been named Honorary Ambassador to Laeral, and will be based in Laeralsford. Hélène Li, the daughter of the Maraix treasurer, has been named Honorary Consul to Laeral, and will be based in Hanshui. Their appointments did cause some speculation among islanders as to the legitimacy of the appointments, and whether they may somehow represent nepotism, but a communication from President Kreider seems to have resolved those concerns.

Xitlali Cuateco will serve as Honorary Consul to Xiomera, based in Tlālacuetztla. Some residents of Maraix did also express concern that it may be unwise to appoint a representative to Xiomera, given the current civil conflict taking place there. However, the Xiomeran government expressed appreciation for the appointment, with Xiomeran Secretary of State Toquauhtli reportedly offering to appoint a diplomatic representative to Maraix in exchange.

Shuellian, Xiomeran governments denounce WOE

In an announcement on the National Shuellian Broadcasting Network, Director Sascha Hoffman of International Affairs made an announcement calling on the Lauchenoirian government to take action against the environmental group "Watchdogs of Our Earth", labeling them an "eco-terrorist" group.

The NSBN report described WOE as "a radical anarcho-primitivist organization, with the goal of destroying modern society and any semblance of civility - reducing humanity to a pre-industrial age." The report went on to accuse WOE of launching several guerrilla attacks against Watchtower mercenaries in Xiomera who were working on behalf of that government. Director Hoffman stated that WOE was likely to continue these attacks in Xiomera, as shown by the destruction of helicopters and the murders of several Imperial soldiers over the course of the civil war, and if not stopped soon these attacks would be certain to spread to neighboring countries.

In a following statement on the XIN network, Empress Calhualyana thanked Director Hoffman for his "strong statement in favor of international stability and against terrorism," and also accused WOE of using "anarchist terrorists" to interfere in the Xiomeran civil conflict. "In large part because of foreign actors like WOE, chaos and violence were brought to Xiomera, resulting in the split of our nation. This form of foreign-manipulated terrorism cannot be allowed to continue if nations are to remain stable and our world to remain peaceful," the Empress said. After her remarks, the new Xiomeran Secretary of Security, Quihichua, confirmed that Xiomera has declared WOE to be "an eco-terrorist organization" and placed them on the nation's watch list of terrorist organizations.

Aurora accused of attempt to kill Kerlian Councillors

One of the Kerlian sleeper agents created as part of that country’s infamous “Aurora Programme” is on trial in the Kerlian High Court, facing allegations that she attempted to assassinate three members of the Council of Kerlile.

The Aurora, a Kerlian of Xiomeran ethnicity identified in court records as “Nelly Aurora” and who uses the name Zichitla, stands accused of attempting to kill Councillors Pauline Pierre, Jennifer Hale and Letitia Greenwood on October 17th during a meeting in the Council Chambers. She also stands accused of threatening Kerlian Foreign Secretary Katrine Porter. The incident reportedly stemmed from a dispute on whether or not to continue participating in the civil conflict taking place in Xiomera. Kerlile is allied to the Huenyan Federation faction in that conflict. Reports allege that the Aurora, who was serving as an advisor on Xiomera, objected to the Council’s decision to seek a peaceful end to the conflict.

Two of the alleged victims, Councillors Pierre and Hale, will appear in court as witnesses for the prosecution. However, Councillor Greenwood, the third alleged victim, has refused to appear in court and has stated publicly that she believes Zichitla to be innocent. The unusual refusal by Greenwood to testify has sparked acrimonious debate between the members of the Council on Kerlian social media.

The accused Aurora was seen outside the Court on November 24th, the day the trial began, with a noticeable bruise on her face. The Kerlian government confirmed that a prison guard has been arrested for breaking the country’s Prohibition of Torture Act of 2019 in relation to the bruising incident.

The accused Aurora has submitted a plea of innocent on all charges, and the trial is expected to last several weeks.

Warriors of Our Earth under fire

The Warriors of Our Earth – a breakaway faction of the Lauchenoirian environmental group Watchdogs of Our Earth which endorses the use of violence – are under fire after being designated as a terrorist organization by multiple nations.

The government of Lauchenoiria designated the group as a terrorist organization after 21 of its members allegedly seized control of the headquarters for the Butterfly Island provincial government in Seahaven on November 15th. The Lauchenoirian authorities arrested the 21 activists on November 23rd after a prolonged standoff.

The nations of Shuell and Xiomera have since designated the group as terrorists as well. National Shuellian Broadcasting Network (NSBN) called WOE a “radical anarcho-primitivist organization, with the goal of destroying modern society and any semblance of civility”, while Xiomera decried the influence of “foreign-manipulated terrorism” in their present civil conflict.

Both Xiomera and Shuell have accused the group of destroying vehicles and killing Xiomeran soldiers on Manauia Island prior to the Imperial withdrawal from the island. Shuell has also accused the group of targeting Watchtower mercenaries hired to assist the Xiomeran government. Empress Calhualyana, the leader of Xiomera, has called for the extradition of those responsible and placed WOE on the nation’s terrorism watch list. Prime Minister Josephine Alvarez would only promise to “consider” extraditing any Lauchenoirian citizen accused of committing terrorist attacks abroad, in echoes of previous extradition disputes between Xiomera and Lauchenoiria.

No official statement has been released from the Warriors organization. However, the main WOE organization has issued a statement denouncing the classification of the Warriors faction as terrorists. The statement called the designation an “attack on civil liberties” and accused Prime Minister Alvarez of being a “dictator in disguise and puppet of Shuell” for making it.

Other governments have weighed in as well. The government of the separatist Huenyan Federation issued a statement, in the name of the Huenyan Assembly, condemning the designation of Warriors as terrorists and citing their “fighting for freedom” in Manauia Island as proof of their “worthy intentions”. The government of Milintica also issued a statement strongly condemning the designation and announcing that Milintica will not recognize it nor honor any arrest warrants for WOE members. The provisional government of Manauia Island has also sent a formal letter of protest to the Lauchenoirian government, saying that the group “fought both for the environment and for the freedom of the people of Manauia Island” and that its members “deserve better than a prison cell.”

Xiomerans on Netlcoātl Islands arm themselves, vow to resist expulsion

Xiomerans on the Netlcoātl Islands have begun arming themselves and have vowed to resist an order from the new government there for them to leave the islands by midnight on November 28th.

The Netlcoātl Islands declared independence on August 21st, two days after expelling Xiomeran military forces. Since then, a provisional government led by Ahuac, the son of the local leader Itzamatul, has run the islands. The islanders claim that Itzamatul was killed by Imperial soldiers while in their custody. The Xiomeran government has denied this, saying that Itzamatul died of natural causes. The Xiomeran government has also accused the islanders’ provisional government of executing unarmed Xiomeran soldiers who had surrendered.

Ahuac issued an order on November 22nd giving all those of Xiomeran ancestry until midnight on November 28th to voluntarily leave the islands or else be forcibly expelled. While some Xiomerans on the islands have fled, many have refused to do so and are reportedly arming themselves in defiance of the provisional government’s mandate.

The Xiomerans refusing to leave are led by Necacoehua, the mayor of the islands’ capital Citlamina. “We have been on these islands for centuries,” Necacoehua told a DTNS reporter. “The native islanders are telling us to go back home - but this is our home. It has been for generations. For that matter, we are as much ‘natives’ of these islands by now as anyone else. We will not give up our homes and our lives.”

The mayor said that he offered to negotiate terms with the provisional government under which the Xiomeran residents of the islands could stay, but told DTNS that the provisional government has refused to talk. A negotiator sent from the separatist government of the Huenyan Federation has also been turned away, according to Necacoehua.

“We don’t want to fight - but we will if we have to,” the mayor said.

For its part, the provisional government has warned that its deadline for Xiomerans to leave is “non-negotiable and will be enforced.” The provisional government also accused the Xiomeran government of sending weapons and fighters to the islands in secret, after they intercepted a smuggling craft they claim was bringing weapons to the Xiomerans on the islands. The Xiomeran leader, Empress Calhualyana, would neither confirm nor deny the accusation, and reiterated her previous warning that Xiomera “won’t just stand by and watch as Xiomeran civilians are targeted for ethnic cleansing.”

“If the international community does not intervene to protect our civilians, we will,” the Empress told DTNS.

Former Xiomeran Emperor found guilty, sentenced to death

The former Xiomeran Emperor, Xochiuhue, during his trial

After an eight-day trial, the former Emperor Xochiuhue of Xiomera has been found guilty of a huge slate of charges, and sentenced to death by the nation's highest judge.

Panxī, the cihuacoatl or chief justice of the Xiomeran Empire, declared that Xochiuhue had been proven to be "solely responsible and undeniably guilty" of a massive slate of over 350 charges brought against him by the Xiomeran Ministry of Justice. Among the charges were genocide, murder, manslaughter, and treason. The Xiomeran Minister of Justice, Cuicanan, served as prosecutor in a rare exercise of that power by the nation's highest justice official. "Xochiuhue was responsible for wrongdoing on a massive scale. On behalf of the Xiomeran people and the world, justice will be served when he pays for his crimes."

Xochiuhue's defense attorney, Ilochihuan, had argued that the former Emperor was not culpable of the charges against him due to insanity. This defense, however, was rejected by Panxī, who declared that the former Emperor "acted with malice and with full knowledge and awareness of his actions" during his brief reign.

For his own part, the former Emperor offered surprisingly little resistance to the charges against him, refusing to answer most questions posed to him and repeatedly stating that he had acted "for the good of the Empire and the Xiomeran people" and did not recognize the authority of the court. When asked if others in the Xiomeran government, such as the current ruler Calhualyana, bore any responsibility for the actions of the Xiomeran Empire during the civil war in Huenya, he repeatedly refused to answer, stating that "I was and am the Emperor and I made all decisions, and regret none of them."

Xiomerans in what remains of the Xiomeran Empire are openly celebrating the downfall of Xochiuhue, who the current government has labeled "the cruelest and most incompetent leader in Imperial history." However, in the areas that have separated from the Xiomeran Empire in the aftermath of the civil war, the reaction is mixed. The provisional governments of Manauia Island and the Netlcoātl Islands, along with the government of Milintica, issued a joint statement under the banner of the Alliance of Non-Aligned Nations (ANAN) calling the trial a sham. "Xochiuhue was indeed guilty of the crimes he was labeled with, but the idea that he is the only one that bears responsibility is absurd," the statement read. The statement also declared that the nations in question "will not accept a scapegoat taking all the blame" and that the upcoming talks in Jinyu to end the fighting in Huenya "must ensure justice is done to punish all the Xiomeran militarists and imperialists responsible for this tragedy."

The government of the rival Huenyan Federation issued its own statement, calling the trial "a show trial in the fashion typical of totalitarian regimes" and stating that while their government was glad Xochiuhue would face punishment, that it would not change their claim that all Xiomeran governments are illegitimate regardless of who leads them and that they must cede their authority to the Huenyan Federation.

Yauhmi: No "rush to elections"

Yauhmi addressing the media today

In a press conference today, the Great Speaker of Huenya, Yauhmi, told the media that the newly forming nation would not "rush to hold elections" like the regime of Empress Calhualyana in Xiomera.

"The elections being called by the usurper are clearly meant to provide legitimacy to her regime, slapping a veneer of democracy onto her tyranny like the makeup covering the face of a harlot. Those elections are just meant to seat a political party and a prime minister who are absolutely loyal to the usurper, to bolster her power and make her seem like a fair leader," Yauhmi said. She urged the international community to reject the Xiomeran regime's call for the international community to send election observers, saying that "would simply help her make the false case that her regime is legitimate."

Yauhmi said that the Huenyan Federation, which is currently being run by her and a self-appointed Huenyan Assembly of tribal leaders, will "take our time and make sure we build something that lasts, and brings genuine representation and freedom to our people, rather than faking democracy." A Committee on Democratization has been formed, with representatives from all ethnic groups in Huenya and seats for both liberal and conservative Huenyans. This committee, Yauhmi said, will be responsible for creating the framework for a new government, including an elected legislature and head of government, as well as setting a timetable for elections and giving political parties ample time to form and campaign.

The press conference today was the first public appearance by Yauhmi in several weeks. Her son and heir apparent, Texōccoatl, has been holding most of the public appearances as of late. This has led to speculation that the 72-year-old Yauhmi, who was tortured in the aftermath of her overthrow at the beginning of Xiomera's civil conflict, may be ailing or in poor health. These rumors have been strongly denied by Huenyan officials, who insist that Yauhmi "is as healthy and strong as ever, and as determined to lead our people into a better future as ever."

Kerlile to host 2021 International Women's Congress

President Rebecca Arnott of Kerlile

It has been announced that the 65th International Women’s Congress will take place in Hazelton, Kerlile in June 2021. President Rebecca Arnott of Kerlile told the media today that she was "delighted" by the decision. “We are thankful that the organizers of the International Women’s Conference have allowed us to host this conference which is close to the hearts of many in Kerlile. This is evidence that our efforts at pushing reform of some of our less inclusive policies are being recognized. We will welcome any and all world leaders who wish to attend the conference, finally being held once more in its home," Arnott said.

The International Women's Congress is a biannual conference bringing together leading feminists from around the world to discuss "the political, social, and economic advancement of the status of women." Held in various host cities worldwide since its founding in 1893, the IWC is the oldest and leading organ for mobilization on women's rights worldwide. Beginning with humble origins in the 1890s, the IWC played a crucial role in the founding of Kerlile as a women's state, the international women's suffrage movement, and the promotion of women's employment and reproductive rights. The last International Women's Congress was held in 2019 in Songshan, Laeral.

The first conference in 1893 was held in North Fleura, the territory of which is now Kerlile. At the 1913 IWC conference, a discussion on the foundation of a nation led by women was initiated by Edith Hart, eventually leading to the creation of Kerlile as a state. Kerlile has submitted bids to hold the conference often, apart from in 2019 and during the 1990s civil war, but has not been accepted since 1977.  The IWC has not been held in Kerlile since prior to the nation’s civil war in the 1990s due to concerns about human rights abuses put forward by certain countries. The decision to host the conference in Kerlile once more is seen as a sign by many that Kerlile's previously questionable reputation in the international community has been improved greatly by the Arnott administration.

Peace talks to end Xiomeran civil war begin
Status of former Xiomeran territories, Intra-Xiomera Canal expected to be major issues

Talks have begun in the Laeralite city of Jinyu to end the civil war in Xiomera, with delegations from multiple nations and relevant parties attending, both as negotiators and as observers.

The talks, which are being hosted by President Liu Mei-Han of Laeral and other Laeralite officials, are seen as the best chance to end the civil war which has been going on for eight months now, and has dragged multiple nations into the conflict on both sides. Representatives from the Xiomeran Empire, along with Eiria, Legionas, Milintica, and the separatist states of Huenya, Manauia Island and the Netlcoātl Islands are expected to attend, along with observers from the Slokais Islands. The information released by the government of Laeral for the talks stated that they hope "for a productive joint dialogue to resolve the conflict and lay the foundations for an equitable, lasting peace in Huenya, Manauia Island, the Netlcoātl Islands, and surrounding territories."

Those hopes, experts say, may be difficult at best to achieve. The two major parties to the conflict, the Xiomeran Empire and the separatist Huenyan Federation, have severely opposed positions. The Xiomeran Empire is demanding that Huenyan and allied forces withdraw from the area around the city of Zapotlán and the Intra-Xiomera Canal, and that the Huenyans abandon their claim to sovereignty over what remains of the Xiomeran Empire. The Huenyans, in their turn, are also demanding full control over the Canal, and demanding that the new ruler of Xiomera, Empress Calhualyana, step down and allow the Xiomeran Empire to be absorbed into the Huenyan Federation.

The other parties involved in the conflict also have strong positions that may make the discussions extremely challenging. While the Eirian, Kerlian and Legionite governments have not released official statements on their positions, it is widely expected that both will push for the Canal to become an international zone not under the control of either party to the Xiomeran conflict. It is also widely expected that the international community will demand that the Canal Zone become a DMZ to separate the two sides, a position strongly opposed by Huenyan religious and political extremists who are demanding unification of Huenya and the end of the Xiomeran Empire. The expected position of the international community concerning the Canal is also opposed by the Xiomeran Empire, which has said it is willing to cede western Huenya, Manauia Island and the Netlcoātl Islands but not the area around Zapotlán or the Canal itself.

Still other parties involved with the conflict, which have banded together under the banner of the Alliance of Non-Aligned Nations, are expected to mirror the demands of the international community, but go even further to demand reparations from Xiomera for both historic occupation and alleged war crimes during the civil war. The ANAN states (Milintica, Manauia Island and the Netlcoātl Islands) are also expected to demand that pivotal figures from the Xiomeran side be placed on trial by the international community for war crimes, and that the involvement of foreign mercenaries by the Xiomeran side be fully investigated, a demand expected to be echoed by some on the Huenyan side as well. The Xiomeran government has already stated that it will not surrender any of its nationals to any international body for trial or punishment, but that it will conduct its own investigations and trials to address alleged war crimes by its side.

Unrest grows in Slokais Islands

The growing unrest in the Slokais Islands has begun to alarm other governments, as violence and terrorism there threaten to spiral out of control.

A series of violent incidents have been unfolding over the past several days. The cities of Asslanca, Nerrak and Wallnang have been taken over by the pro-Kaijan independence group known as the Kaijan League. The group is reportedly using a broadcasting tower in Nerrak, a city with a population of 1200, to communicate. There are reports that the group executed the local tax collector, as well as other government officials, in Nerrak as well. Reports have also emerged that the group has been performing extrajudicial executions of civlians deemed to be supporting the Sloakisian government. There has also been an attack on Velganga Township, but no further information has been made available about that incident. Reports have also emerged that a broadcast team from Serriel has gone missing, along with the head of the Kascan Police who was escorting them. The group has an estimated 200 to 250 fighters, according to Slokaisian government sources.

The government attempted a raid on Kaijan League operatives in Kaijan City, but the operation reportedly failed, with a wanted suspect escaping. The government has also had to deal with anger among its own citizens. A recent protest by the New Right political party in Southland, a Kaijanese area of New Liverpool, turned violent when the activists seized control of the Kaijese Community Center there and clashed with both police and local residents. The incident in New Liverpool has foreign observers concerned that the Kaijan unrest may spiral into an ethnic conflict between Kaijanese and other Slokaisians.

Kerlian government swerves towards reform in unexpected moves

An amendment to the Education and Upbringing of Daughters of the Council Act has been approved by the Council of Kerlile. The amendment will make it legal for Kerlian Councillors and their heirs to raise male children, marry males and involve the fathers of their children in their children’s lives. Councillor Jennifer Hale’s Democracy Bill is also now proceeding to a debate in Parliament, after months of trying to get the bill passed by the Council. The Parliament of Kerlile is set to begin debates on the Democracy Bill in the new year, including discussions of fair and free elections, shorter terms for Members of Parliament, reducing the influence of the Council on the workings of Parliament, and running open Presidential Elections. A clause in the original draft extending voting rights to males was removed from the draft sent to Parliament.

The unexpected moves by the Kerlian government, which has previously been known for its strongly matriarchal views, has received differing reactions. Xia Chiu, second in line to the Chiu family seat on the Council, told the Kerlian News Service via video interview she is “ecstatic” about the changes. “I will finally be able to return home with both my children, who are both part of my family. The Council can only be strengthened by this amendment, as it strengthens the very fabric of our families.” Chiu is currently in exile in Lauchenoiria due to her bearing a son.

Former President of Kerlile Joanna Greenwood, on the other hand, said the decisions by the Council will lead to “degeneracy and decay”, and will distract the minds of the Council from their mission to seek full women’s liberation across the globe. Greenwood has been a staunch supporter of the restrictions on marriage and child rearing for those who will one day become Councillors, and had previously lobbied for a change to the marriage law to make it stricter by outlawing lesbian marriage for Councillors also.

The unexpected movement towards reform in Kerlile, which had previously been resisted by at least half of the Council, if not more, is being described by experts as "highly promising", but that time will tell if such reforms, which would bring about fundamental changes in Kerlile, can be achieved without resistance.

ANAN to build headquarters, introduce joint currency

The newly formed Alliance of Non-Aligned Nations (ANAN) announced today that it will be building a headquarters complex in Huānoch, the capital of Milintica. The organization said that the headquarters will be mostly funded by the Milintican government, due to the "emerging status" of the other two members of the alliance.

The headquarters complex will be built on public land in the Government Quarter of the capital, near the Milintican assembly building. Plans for the building include a conference hall, archives, library, offices and an assembly chamber for members to vote.

In the same announcement, the ANAN announced that its member states will be adopting a joint currency, the ANAN Dollar. "This joint currency will help Manauia Island and the Netlcoātl Islands liberate themselves from having to use Xiomeran currency, and allow all three nations to jointly develop a stronger economic base," Prime Minister Tupai Tapihana of Milintica said when making the announcement. The former Xiomeran territories will begin using the ANAN Dollar immediately, while Milintica will slowly phase out the tlipan, its current form of currency, in favor of the ANAN Dollar over the next year.

Some Milinticans have criticized both the expense of building a headquarters complex for the ANAN, and of switching over to a new currency, when Milintica itself is economically struggling and faces significant budgetary issues. The Prime Minister dismissed these concerns, saying that "one cannot put a price on forging ties of cooperation and comradeship between like-minded nations and peoples." In a statement condemning the proposed headquarters, the Green Party of Milintica said that "despite what the Prime Minister said, one can put a price on the government's ambition of dancing on the world stage, and that price is 65 million tlipans and counting," citing the current estimate of the cost to build the proposed headquarters. The GPM also sharply cricitized the government's choice for a headquarters site for the ANAN, which will take a large urban park out of commission.

Eirian Chancellor reveals talks of political union

Eirian Chancellor William Lancaster has revealed that discussions between Eirian and Legionite officials have been going on for several months now, with the goal of possibly forming a regional bloc.

The potential alliance has unofficially been labeled the "Caxcanan Union" in the preliminary discussions between Eirian and Legionite officials, and was praised as "an amazing opportunity to help increase cooperation, trade, and relations in Eastern Caxcana" by Professor Julie Hartman, Professor of International Politics at East Borean University, in an interview with the Eirian National News. However, the discussions have also raised concerns by other experts that the discussions of a Caxcanan Union, coming at the same time as the recently formed ANAN alliance, may portend an era of competing alliances and regional competition in Caxcana. "We're seeing nations aligning and picking sides, and this is always a concern, as alliances often lead to conflicts rather than preventing them," Marcus Thompson, with the think tank Renaissance Theory, told DTNS. Thompson also speculated that if a Caxcanan Union is formed, that the newly forming state of Huenya may seek to join, causing further unrest in eastern Caxcana. "If the Huenyans join an alliance, that may incite them to abandon pursuing a peaceful resolution to their conflict with what is left of Xiomera. We could also end up seeing a future-state Xiomeran Empire being completely isolated from the rest of Caxcana, and when already paranoid totalitarian states become pariahs that are isolated from the international community, that's when they become very dangerous."

Senate scandal rocks Eiria

Formido Party leader Alexander Dukov and Eclipse Party leader Alison Legrand have resigned from their parties' leadership, as well as their roles as minority and majority leader of the Eirian Senate, after a bribery scandal emerged which has rocked the Eirian political scene. In a startling article published by the Borean Journal, it was revealed that both Dukov and Legrand allegedly attempted to bribe journalists to write articles favoring their factions of their parties. The two also allegedly tried to bribe journalists to write articles discrediting the moderate wings of their own parties and the rival Eirian Centrist Party. The two party leaders had also allegedly made a deal to try to win seats in the Senate for their respective factions.

Despite the resignations, Dukov and Legrand still hold the position of Senator for now. Investigations have been launched by both the Senate Committee on Improper Conduct and the Ministry of Justice in regards to the accusations.

Other Eirian political figures were quick to react to the news. "It's a frightening accusation, and if it's true, it says a frightening amount about the potential for corruption in our Republic. It's appalling that leaders of our country would break the law to try to stab their own party members in the back just to gain Senate seats," Centrist Senate Leader Justin Olmansen told the media. Chancellor William Lancaster also commented on the resignations and allegations by saying, "the accusations levied on Senators Dukov and Legrand are serious and reprehensible."

"If these accusations are proven true, I fully expect the Ministry of Justice to exact punishment how they see fit. Bribery is a serious breach of the Oath of the Republic, not to mention highly illegal. It's a shame that Legrand and Dukov would bring doubt and skepticism on the entire Eirian democracy like this," Lancaster said.

Fellsian Chancellor announces Cabinet shake-up following Air Hespia probe

Queensgrace- High Fellsian Chancellor Choi Myung-ki has announced the replacement of two more members of the Council of State, the Fellsian cabinet, in a sign of the growing reach of the Air Hespia corruption probe. Minister of Telecommunications Gan Jiwoo and Minister of Transportation Tristan Powell presented resignation letters yesterday after both were placed under investigation by the Prosecutor-General’s office. Lord Chancellor Choi’s handpicked replacements appear to be intended to add star power to his only five-month old cabinet.

For Minister of Telecommunications, Chancellor Choi has chosen Constitutional Republican Party MP Keir Lamont as a fresh face for the cabinet. Lamont, first elected in 2018 as an MP for one of the Queensgrace Christian seats, was previously the founder and CEO of Tancom, High Fells’ second-largest telecommunications provider. At 39, Lamont will be the youngest member of Choi’s government. His first task is likely to be modernizing and expanding High Fells’s internet capacity, a key component of the Lord Chancellor’s Agenda 2030 development plan. An Dae, a long-time MP of the Felicity Party, will assume the Transportation portfolio.

The cabinet shakeup comes as the Air Hespia probe continues to rattle the Fellsian political elite. Having brought down the former right-wing coalition government, Chancellor Choi’s left-leaning coalition of the secular Constitutional Republican party and Minjian-aligned Felicity party now faces investigation by the Special Prosecutor’s office after allegedly accepting bribes in the forms of company stock from the Laeral-based airline in exchange for favorable privileges at Fellsian airports. Twelve company executives and 18 members of Parliament have already been placed under investigation, including former Chancellor Ryong Sang-chol and the two former ministers of Choi’s government. Speaking to the media, Prosecutor-General Chae Sang-ook did not rule out further prosecutions. “The extent of the corruption within Parliament has not yet been fully uncovered. All that is certain is that it extends deeply throughout the entire political apparatus.”

Elections in Xiomera: a primer

What's up for vote?

On January 1, 2021, Xiomerans will go to the polls in the first-ever elections in that country. The elections are meant to seat a new Imperial Parliament and elect a new Prime Minister. However, experts say that the most important part of the election are three referendums which are also up for vote.

Prime Minister and Parliament

There are three candidates running to be Xiomera's first Prime Minister, leading three parties hoping to gain seats in the new Imperial Parliament.

Toquihu (left) with Empress Calhualyana and Coaneca, newly appointed Xiomeran Minister of Information

The leading candidate is Toquihu, a retired corporate executive with Mizhua Corporation and the leader of the Xiomeran Citizens' Party (XCP). The XCP was founded by members of Xiomera's infamous Good Citizens' League, a pro-government pressure group. The XCP is widely seen as being the preferred party of Empress Calhualyana, and Toquihu a candidate likely to work in lockstep with her if elected. The XCP states that its goals are to "protect Xiomeran sovereignty and independence, make Xiomera stronger economically and militarily, defend Xiomeran interests, promote Xiomeran business, strengthen Xiomeran society and defend Xiomeran culture and heritage."

Xayactochtli, giving a speech to IGP followers

A second candidate who has risen up to challenge Toquihu and the XCP is Xayactochtli, a retired Xiomeran general who has founded the Imperial Glory Party (IGP). The IGP, and Xayactochtli, believe that Xiomera should not have entered into peace talks to end their civil conflict with the separatist Huenyan Federation, and that the nation should continue fighting to regain its lost territories. The IGP also believes that Empress Calhualyana and the XCP are "giving too much away" in the interest of peace. Xayactochtli has openly called for Xiomera to keep fighting the war "until no Xiomerans are left standing, if that is what it takes, rather than accept a humiliating and servile peace treaty." The IGP has also called for Xiomera to pursue an expansionist and aggressive foreign and trade policy, and for a massive military rebuilding and increase.

Cozamalotl, leader of the Unification Party of Xiomera

The third, and most unlikely, candidate, is Cozamalotl, the former head of various Xiomeran opposition groups before the coup that toppled then-Empress Yauhmi from power. Cozamalotl is now leading the Unification Party of Xiomera (UPX), a "big-tent" party that has formed to take in virtually all Xiomeran groups opposed to Empress Calhualyana in a last-ditch bid to derail her takeover of the country. The Unification Party has called for demilitarization, defunding Xiomeran security forces and law enforcement, the re-adoption of social programs that had been introduced by the pre-coup government, and the gradual reunification of Xiomera with its now-separated former western territories of Huenya in a democratic state.

What is the outlook?

Most current polls taken within Xiomera surprisingly show Toquihu and the XCP with a solid lead over both their opponents. While the Unification Party was hoping to capitalize on the previously widespread support for the program of the former Empress Yauhmi, the XCP has been running an aggressive campaign demonizing Yauhmi for abdicating the Obsidian Throne and instead choosing to lead the separatist Huenyan state. XCP campaign ads, and candidates, have accused Yauhmi of "abandoning" and "betraying" the Xiomeran people, and the Unification Party of being the puppet of Yauhmi and "foreign powers" that "control" her. Polls show that since her abdication of the Obsidian Throne, support for Yauhmi has plummeted in Xiomera proper, with many Xiomerans now saying they no longer trust the former Empress. This has caused significant blowback for the Unification Party, which has seen many of its rallies and candidate stops disrupted by angry Xiomerans accusing them of treason and foreign manipulation. The UPX, in turn, has accused the government of Empress Calhualyana of being behind the attacks on their rallies, and Xiomeran police and security forces of colluding with the attackers by standing by and not intervening.

While the IGP is also campaigning heavily, most polls indicate that Xiomerans are tired of the war, and not interested in the highly aggressive platform of the IGP if it means prolonging the fighting. "Most Xiomerans want trade to resume, for the economy to get back in high gear, for people to go back to work, and for the fighting to stop," Coanitzin, a political affairs analyst for DTNS, said. "The XCP is promising that, and Xiomerans seem to be buying into it."

A DTNS poll taken today shows that if the elections were held today, Toquihu would win with 68% of the vote, and the XCP would take 110 of the 160 seats in the Imperial Parliament, giving Empress Calhualyana a solid majority to advance her agenda.

Referendums

The elections for Prime Minister and Parliament are expected to cement the reign of Empress Calhualyana, and thus not have a huge impact on the Xiomeran state. However, the three referendums being run in the same election are expected to have the potential to change Xiomera forever.

Referendum A, the Referendum on Divesting Former Territories, will ask Xiomerans to formally approve the government's plan to cede western Huenya, Manauia Island and the Netlcōatl Islands in order to pursue a peace settlement. This will result in Xiomera ceding half of its territory, and is the most controversial of the three referendums at vote. Empress Calhualyana has said that agreeing to cede these territories "will help Xiomera proper live in peace and prosperity as a single, united nation" and is the only way to end the war while maintaining Xiomeran sovereignty. The government has argued that the cost of maintaining control over the separatist regions, both in lives and in actual money, is more than it is worth to hold onto them. Xiomeran nationalists, however, are angry at what they consider the diminishing of their Empire. The DTNS poll taken today shows that this referendum is actually in danger of failing by a slim margin, 52% to 48%, which would throw a major commitment Xiomera has made in the Jinyu peace talks into doubt.

Referendum B, the Referendum on Xiomera’s Future, asks Xiomerans to decide whether or not they wish the Xiomeran Empire as it currently stands to remain independent, or to agree to join the Huenyan Federation which has formed in the west of Huenya on former Xiomeran territories. It is only binding if Referendum A is approved, and is seen as a way for Empress Calhualyana to counter the demands of Yauhmi and the Huenyan state that Xiomera should fall under their authority. "Yauhmi has abdicated the Obsidian Throne, and after Referendums A and B pass, the Xiomeran people will firmly reject her demands and vote to remain independent and free. At that point, the demands of this so-called 'Huenyan Federation' on us will be finally and decisively put to rest by the will of the Xiomeran people, expressed in a free and fair election," a statement from the XCP read. If Referendum B is approved, the Xiomeran government is expected to use the results to argue that no one has a right to force the Xiomeran Empire to disband against the will of its people. This referendum, according to DTNS polls, is currently doing much better for the government than Referendum A, with a 72% to 28% margin in favor of Xiomera remaining independent from the Huenyan Federation. When asked why Referendum B is doing so much better than the Referendum A it is tied to, Coanitzin said that the disparity reflects Xiomeran citizens' anger at the loss of their western Empire. "Many people are saying that they support Referendum B as a way to declare their desire for the Xiomeran Empire to continue and remain independent, but are also saying no to Referendum A as a way to express their displeasure at the idea of ceding so much territory," he said.

Referendum C, the Referendum on Acceptance of the Monarch, is perhaps the biggest gamble that Empress Calhualyana and the government are taking. It asks Xiomerans to approve Calhualyana's assumption of the throne following Emperor Xochiuhue's removal from power, and allow her to continue ruling as monarch. If passed, this proposal would formally end the longstanding process known as the Great Selection by which Xiomera traditionally chose rulers, and establish a defacto hereditary monarchy in Xiomera. If Referendum C fails, Calhualyana would be forced to hold a Great Selection to defend her place on the throne within a year's time. As support for the former ruler Yauhmi continues to decline in Xiomera, and as Calhualyana increasingly portrays herself as the nation's savior from the mad reign of the former Emperor Xochiuhue, she continues to gain support. DTNS polls indicate that if today was election day, Calhualyana would be approved to continue as monarch by a 68% to 32% margin.

Is the election really free and fair?

That depends on who you ask. The Xiomeran government has allowed foreign observers and NGOs to observe the election. Initial reports indicate that the election is mostly being allowed to proceed without hindrance. However, observers have noted that supporters of the Unification Party and its candidates are facing "significant pressure and duress" which makes it harder for them to participate in the election. Observers have also noted "significant signs" of both domestic and foreign involvement in the elections, and expressed concerns that outside parties may attempt to "manipulate" the elections through propaganda and cyberattacks.

Elections in the Slokais Islands: a primer

What's up for vote?

Voters in the Slokais Islands will go to the polls tomorrow to select a new President and legislators. With the future direction of the country up for vote, and a simmering insurgency in the often-restive Kaijan region casting a shadow over the vote, these elections may be more consequential than normal for Slokaisian residents. Here's a brief primer on the election.

Presidential candidates

Joseph Zhang, Centrist Party
History: Born in 1965 in the North Valley, Zhang is a long-time politician. He was previously president from 2010-2016, and then from 2018 to the present. Zhang is known for reforming the Slokaisian economy after the 2008 economic crash there, and for taking a pro-business economic stance.
Platform: Socially conservative, with more liberal views on economics and healthcare. Emphasis on reducing state ownership of business. Promotes tax increases to provide free social services, and also promotes higher taxes on the middle and upper classes.

Joseph Chavez, National Alliance
History: Born on July 12 1979 in New Liverpool, Chavez attended the University of New Liverpool and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Political Theory. His political career began in 2000 when he ran for his local ward council. In 2004, he ran for Ward Mayor and won by a landslide. Chavez held the position until 2006, when he ran for Representative in the Slokaisian Legislature. He failed to win in 2006 but won in 2008. He then joined the Centrist Party and kept growing in his political influence until 2012, when he became the Minister of Transportation under President Joseph Zhang. In 2016, he was elected President. In 2018, he left the Centrist Party and created the new National Alliance party; he lost the presidential election but his new party managed to gain a majority of seats. Since then he has been the Prime Minister of Slokais.
Platform: Socially and economically left of center. Supports free government healthcare in conjunction with private healthcare. Supports reforming Kaijan so that it becomes more stable to prevent further violence, but also supports military action. Promotes increased spending on social services and climate change.

George Oliver, Conservative Party
History: Oliver was born on October 23rd, 1950 and grew up during the Second Slokasian Revolution. At 17, he joined the National Union Army and served until the war ended in 1970. Afterward, he joined the Slokasian Army and rose to the rank of Lieutenant in the 7th Infantry Division. He left the army in 1978 and joined the Conservative Party. In 1992 he was selected to be the Minister of Defense after being elected to the Slokaisian Legislature. He was Minister of Defense through 3 governmental changes until 2006. In 2008, Oliver ran for president and lost to Joseph Zhang after three rounds of voting. In May of 2020, Oliver caused outrage when he called indigenous rights protesters "thugs and criminals" and declared that if he is elected, president he would get rid of the Tribal Council.
Platform: Supports deregulation and a pro-business stance on the economy. Supports lower taxes. Promotes support for industrial workers, and retraining them as the economy becomes more tech-focused. Supports military action in Kaijan and thinks that the tribal council is part of the issues there.

Sean Khan, Green Party
History: Sean Simran Joseph Khan was born on May 14th, 1965 in West Valley Township. His parents were lawyers in a small town and he grew up close to the Silverado Mountains. Because of this he always had a passion for the environment and for nature. In college, he went to Graywood College and earned a degree in environmental law. He made his own law firm and often was involved in land management claims. During this period, Khan became part of the Green Party. In 1990, he won a seat in the Slokaisian Legislature. In 1992, Khan became the head of the Green Party. In 2000 he was elected President of Slokais. As president, he improved mass transit, protected large amounts of land, created an eco-tourism boom, and began to move the country towards renewable sources of fuel. However, in 2008, he lost after failing to stop an economic collapse due to the global recession. After that, he stepped down as Green Party leader, but kept working on the issues he championed during his presidency.
Platform: Socially liberal, supports public transport and development nationwide. Believes that to fix the crisis in Kaijan, you must support its development.

Micheal Spencer, New Right
History: Micheal Spencer was born on December 16th, 1975 in Hunter Township. In 1995, he burst onto the national political scene when he led a protest in Raytown against the establishment of a provincial tribal council. The protest turned violent, but Spencer gained fame within the Slokaisian right. In 2000, he was elected to the Slokaisian Legislature. In 2006, during the Kaijan War, he called for the removal of the Tuza people from New Liverpool and San Fernando City. In 2010, he voted against the establishment of the Tribal Council. He is very right-leaning on issues and promotes smaller government and a stronger military. Spencer is a highly controversial figure, accused both of committing murder and supporting far-right terror groups.

The following candidates are also running, but are expected to have little impact on the race:

Left Party: Howard Alexander Walker
Socialist: Minmintao Johnson
Partido de Catolico: Reverend Gonzalo Micheals
Muslim Union: Lei Xiang

Kaijan unrest: Effect on the election

Along with the multi-faceted rivalries between the various Slokaisian parties, which have coalesced into alliances such as the "Grand Coalition" and the "Coalition for Slokais", the other major issue looming over the polls on Election Eve is the ongoing fighting in the Kaijan region of the Slokais Islands, and the deeper underlying historic issue of Kaijanese separatism. Several conflicts have been fought throughout Slokaisian history prior to the current unrest, including a war from 2007 to 2010. There are also concerns that far-right groups such as Spencer's New Right are stoking ethnic tension as a backlash to the current conflict.

The island of Kaijan, which is Muslim-majority and culturally and linguistically distinct from the rest of Slokais, is now posing a major issue for the participants in the Slokaisian elections. The recent unrest was sparked by an uprising led by a group calling itself the Kaijan League, an Islamist group which has been designated as a terrorist organization by several countries. Federal troops have been deployed to deal with the uprising, but have so far been ineffective in regaining control of areas seized by the Kaijan League or in ending the uprising itself. With the government response seen as possibly stumbling, incumbent President Joseph Zhang's political career, and the hopes of his political allies, could well be the latest casualties of the conflict.

DTNS Newshour is an hour-long recap of news events that broadcasts on DTNS TV at noon, 5 pm and 10pm locally in all IDU countries where the DTNS is allowed to broadcast. The following is an excerpt from the Newshour broadcast on 1/2/2021.

---

Lea Landi, newscaster for DTNS: Welcome to Newshour, I am Lea Landi. Two pivotal elections are in the books as the IDU enters 2021.

In an apparent rejection of the current government's handling of the Kaijan insurgency, Slokaisian votes have chosen National Alliance candidate Joseph Chavez over incumbent President Joseph Zhang as the next leader of the Slokais Islands.

(Video of Chavez voting displays)

Zhang had been President of Slokais since 2018, and was respected for economic reforms and boosting the economy, as well as his pro-business stance. However, the renewal of insurgency in Kaijan seems to have doomed his re-election bid. We're here with Joel Trujillo, a professor of political science at the University of West Summersea. Professor Trujillo, welcome to Newshour.

Trujillo: Thanks, Lea, glad to be here.

Landi: So, Professor, what exactly happened in the Slokaisian election?

Trujillo: I think it's clear that the renewal of insurgency yet again in Kaijan, and the Slokaisian government's so-far ineffective response to that insurgency, is what killed President Zhang's chances of re-election. There is really no other identifiable factor that I see to cause such a dramatic shift. But it's clear, at least from where I sit, that the Zhang administration has lost the confidence of the Slokaisian people to handle this matter in Kaijan, or for that matter, the rise of far-right elements such as the New Right in the rest of Slokais, which is as much a danger to Slokais as the Kaijan matter, if not more, in my estimation.

(Video of Zhang voting displays)

Landi: The New Right did see a significant jump in the Slokaisian legislature, but they're still a relatively small presence there compared to the major parties. Are they really that much of a threat?

Trujillo: They are, and people should be worried. They espouse a racist and discriminatory platform, and they seem to be riding the discontent of the Slokaisian people about Kaijan to grow their base. They had the largest jump in the number of seats they hold, mainly at the expense of the Conservatives, who had the biggest drop from 2018. That alone should worry people, and I think it does worry many Slokaisians, who just don't seem to believe that Zhang has the answers to that rise in right-wing populism any more than he did the unrest in Kaijan.

(Image credited to the New Liverpool Daily Newswire appears)

Landi: So what happens next in Slokais?

Trujillo: President-Elect Chavez has his work cut out for him. He will need to find a way to bring the Kaijan insurgency to an end without laying the foundation for just having another uprising a few years down the road, as Slokaisian governments seem to keep doing. It seems apparent to me that the Slokaisian people want an end to the constant cycle of unrest in Kaijan, and are expecting Chavez to deliver on that. But he will also have to do so in a way that brings the Kaijanese into the fold, while also not upsetting other people in Slokais and feeding Spencer's New Right movement. As much as he might loathe doing so, Chavez could do worse than making common cause with the Conservatives to try to fend off the rise of the New Right somehow. The New Right is clearly cannibalizing the Conservatives politically, and as they say, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend," after all. Bear in mind, Chavez has to do all this while also not killing the Slokaisian economy, and he also has to restore confidence both locally and internationally in Slokais. It's a tall order, and I don't envy him the task, frankly.

Landi: Indeed. Now, turning to the Xiomeran elections. The government there seems to have won a sweeping mandate for its leadership. The big gamble by Empress Calhualyana to put her fate, and that of her government, in the hands of the Xiomeran people seems to have paid off for her. But was it really a free and fair election?

(Video of Calhualyana and Toquihu celebrating the election results displays)

Trujillo: Surprisingly, it appears to have gone off in a much more free and fair fashion than anyone expected from a nation as steeped in autocratic tradition as Xiomera. Remember, they've never had a democratic election in their entire 600-year history as a nation - and I don't care what they say, their whole Great Selection thing does not count.

Landi, laughing: Of course. But what did election observers on the ground have to say?

Trujillo: Multiple foreign nations and NGOs sent observers, and they all reported that Xiomeran authorities were surprisingly and unexpectedly cooperative. There were some issues, and some observers did report that they believed the government to be behind some of the protests and disruptions we saw at Unification Party rallies and campaign events. At the very least, the supposedly spontaneous efforts by opponents of the Unification Party to hinder and harass their campaigns do deserve scrutiny. But on the whole, it is really hard to say at that this point that the Xiomeran elections were unfair or manipulated.

Landi: That makes the results of the elections all the more surprising. Less than a year ago, Xiomerans were marching in the streets after the coup that overthrew Yauhmi, demanding her restoration to power. Yesterday, they voted in shocking numbers to completely repudiate her claims and her desires, and those of the upstart Huenyan Federation. How in the world does one explain such a massive shift in less than a year?

(Video of Cozamalotl giving his concession speech appears)

Trujillo: To put it bluntly, these elections, and what led up to them, represent a continuing theme of Yauhmi and her followers. They are great at coming up with visions, and ideas. They could even be called the "good guys," as much as anyone even remotely resembling the term "good" is to be found in the mess in Xiomera or Huenya. But Yauhmi and her side are cataclysmically bad at reading people and understanding timing. Yauhmi sparked the coup in Xiomera in the first place, by totally misreading the readiness of her own people to follow her on the path of reform she wanted to lead them down. Then, when she accepted leadership over the Huenyan Federation, she abdicated the Obsidian Throne. This was seen, by many Xiomerans, as a betrayal of their country and their people, not to mention the sacrifices they had been making for her to return to that throne. Strangely enough, no one on Yauhmi's side seems to get that. Now, in this election, Yauhmi and Cozamalotl, the opposition leader, totally misread their own people again. On the day of the election, Yauhmi made a speech via video to the people in Xiomera, urging them to reject Calhualyana and come back to her. She did it to try to help Cozamalotl, but she probably ruined his slim chances to win. Yauhmi and her side just didn't get a simple fact: the Xiomeran people are angry. They're angry at the war and the economic recession. They're angry at the loss of territory and the loss of prestige that brings. They're angry at the fact that this partition between east and west is likely now to become permanent, and that Xiomera will have to accept it with no recourse. They are, in increasing numbers, viewing the entire war and the peace talks in Jinyu and the likely partition and the loss of their canal as an insult to their nation. And they don't blame Calhualyana for it - they blame Xochiuhue, but now, they also blame Yauhmi for starting the whole chain of events that led Xiomera here.

Landi: Forgive me for saying so, but for people like me on the outside looking in, that makes no sense. Yauhmi and the Huenyans are the ones trying to bring democracy and unity to Huenya, aren't they?

Trujillo: They certainly say so. But look. They aren't even asking Xiomerans if they want what they're selling - this Huenyan Federation. They're telling everyone that Xiomera must join it. For a theoretically rising democracy, that's a pretty authoritarian stance. And as these results demonstrate, no one in Xiomera proper wants to hear it. Calhualyana, Toquihu and the XCP told Xiomerans, "Yauhmi and her new country don't want to offer you a choice - we do. Here's elections. What do you want?" And the Xiomeran people answered, quite resoundingly, that they do not want to be absorbed into some other country, or for their own to end. Xiomerans are an intensely proud people, and quite protective of their sovereignty, and I am still staggered that people like Yauhmi and Cozamalotl, who were part of the Xiomeran system for so long, can't grasp why their ask is so insulting to the Xiomeran people.

Landi: So, in essence, Yauhmi and Cozamalotl and the Unification Party sowed the seeds of their own defeat by misreading everything.

Trujillo: Yes, and also, one cannot discount the masterful efforts by Calhualyana, Toquihu and the XCP to get their own message across. Make no mistake, I am not speaking in admiration for them - they're fascist, imperialist, nationalistic tyrants. But they played to the discontent and anger raging across the Xiomeran electorate like master performers. They sold Xiomerans on an image of their country rising from the ashes of this war, stronger than ever, playing on Xiomerans' desire to be seen as a powerful, independent country beholden to no one. And it worked. I mean, look at these results. Toquihu clobbered Cozamalotl and the other candidate, Xayactochtli - he won almost 63% of the vote. The referendums Calhualyana wanted all passed, even the one that was riskiest, Referendum A. Most painful for Yauhmi and her side, the Xiomerans said pretty decisively that they want Calhualyana to be their Empress now, by passing Referendum C with a significant majority. The XCP dominates the new Imperial Parliament, taking 112 out of 160 seats. And this was all in an election that was actually mostly fair, and open. This was a dominant performance by Calhualyana's side, and a complete fumble by her opponents.

Landi: So....what's next for Xiomera?

Trujillo: The way it looks now, this really cements the worst fears of many. With a pretty decisive mandate from her people, Calhualyana will see no reason to back down. And Yauhmi and the Huenyan side now have little, if any, leverage to demand an outcome other than what the international community is proposing: a permanent partition, and the Xiomeran Empire continuing on. As for Xiomera itself, and its people....I frankly fear that they've been sold a lie by Calhualyana, and that this new Xiomeran government, claiming a mandate, will slowly but surely take steps to ensure they can never be dislodged from power. In the end, the Xiomerans will get the country they asked for and thought they wanted....but buyers' remorse, frankly, can be a bitch. Xiomerans may well learn that in the years to come.

Landi: Well. On that note, thank you, Professor Trujillo, for your great insight.

Trujillo: Thank you for having me on the show.

Mallacaland seizes foreign nationals, threatens Lauchenoirian embassy

- Actions of government spark international crisis

- Multiple nations demand government of King Hassan reverse course, threaten action

In response to a statement from Lauchenoirian Prime Minister Josephine Alvarez, the government of Mallacaland has surrounded the Lauchenoirian Embassy there. Mallacaland security forces also stormed a Lauchenoirian cultural center and detained many Lauchenoirian nationals. The government has also blocked Slokaisian nationals seeking to leave Mallacaland. Today's incidents have sparked a major international crisis and stem from ongoing unrest in Mallacaland.

Timeline of unrest in Mallacaland

January 1st: Protests begin against new social guidelines issued by the Council of Emirs

January 2nd: Over 40 students at Mallacaland City University are arrested for protesting; a violent attack by unknown individuals takes place at Mallacaland International Airport

January 4th: King Abdin II meets with protesters in an attempt to ease tensions

January 5th: The Council of Emirs removes King Abdin II from the throne, replacing him with his nine-year-old brother Hassan; the Emir of Permang is named regent; the Emir of the Western Isles is also removed for refusing to back the deposing of King Abdin II

January 7th: Soldiers in Mallacaland City and the Western Isles revolt, backing the deposed King Abdin II

January 23rd: Peacekeepers from the Slokais Islands arrive in Mallacaland to help maintain peace during elections

January 30th: The governing Muslim Union party dominates national elections that both Mallacaland democracy activists and the international community denounce as rigged

February 2nd: Fighting breaks out between Mallacaland police and Slokaisian peacekeepers in several brief skirmishes

February 3rd: Lauchenoirian Prime Minister Josephine Alvarez issues a condemnation of violence by the Mallacaland government against protesters and expresses concern about the elections, stating that Lauchenoiria is reviewing possible responses. The Mallacaland government then surrounds the Lauchenoirian Embassy and storms a Lauchenoirian cultural center, detaining many Lauchenoirian nationals. The government also blocks Slokaisian nationals from leaving Mallacaland.

What other nations are saying

Milintica: "President Matōchmizalo, standing in front of Haven House, issued the following statement: 'The stripping of rights from the people of Mallacaland, followed by fake elections, was bad enough. But the incidents today against diplomats and innocent civilians are beyond the pale. The government and people of Milintica strongly condemn the actions of the King and his government and demand their immediate reversal. We will support the Lauchenoirian government and people in whatever response they choose to undertake, and further pledge to support the democratic movement in Mallacaland. So far, no Milinticans have been harmed in Mallacaland, and we warn the King and his government to keep it that way. Milintica will respond with all possible force to defend our nationals if they are threatened in any way.'

After the President was done speaking, General Tlehuaque, commander of the Milintican military, issued his own statement: 'Our Popular Freedom Militias are locked and loaded and ready to defend both our own people and anyone whose freedom is threatened. We did it in Xiomera and can do it in Mallacaland, if need be.' " (Voice of the People)

Libertas Omnium Maximus: "These brazen arrests have stunned the international community, with many politicians around the world calling for military intervention and a regime change in Mallacaland. According to Steven Jones, a Maximusian attorney specializing in international law, these arrests constitute an unprecedented and needless violation of international sovereignty, and are tantamount to a declaration of war.

The Maximusian Department of State has issued a formal advisory encouraging all Maximusian citizens in Mallacaland to leave the nation as quickly as possible. As of this evening, all flights to the micro-state have been grounded as well.

Though no sanctions on Mallacaland have been announced, Lucas Brown, the Conservative President of Libertas Omnium Maximus, explained during a press conference this evening that the Maximusian government is disgusted by Hassan's treatment of the Lauchenoirian citizens and diplomats who have been detained. The President further decreed that any attempt to similarly 'hold hostage' Maximusian citizens in Mallacaland would be viewed as an act of military aggression." (Litudinem Herald)

Eiria: "Earlier today, Lauchenoiran diplomats in Mallacaland were rounded up and detained by Mallacalandian police, under orders of the King, who is but nine years old. This is an inexcusable and shocking act, and we stand in solidarity with our Lauchenoiran friends. This stunning event has demonstrated that the safety of our own diplomats cannot be ensured while they remain in Mallacaland. If the Lauchenoiran dignitaries are not returned unharmed within forty-eight hours, we will withdraw all diplomats we have in Mallacaland. And if any Eirian is harmed, tourist or official, the Mallacalandian government shall be met with swift action. This new incident has revealed the unpredictability and danger of the Mallacalandian Monarchy. From dubious elections, to arresting peaceful protesters, lately Mallacaland has exhibited very undemocratic and almost hostile actions to its own people. I urge every Eirian in Mallacaland to leave immediately, for their own safety." (Chancellor William Lancaster, ENN)

Xiomera: "While we have been close friends and trading partners with Mallacaland, the threatening of embassies and diplomats and the other recent incidents in Mallacaland are not something that the Xiomeran Empire can accept or be associated with. For the sake of the people and nation of Mallacaland, I urge King Hassan and his government to rescind these recent hostile actions and restore diplomatic relations to a normal status before it is too late. We advise Xiomerans currently in Mallacaland to return to Xiomera as soon as possible and until further notice. While we remain committed to our friendly relationship with Mallacaland and its government, the Xiomeran Empire is obligated to state that any harm to Xiomeran nationals or interests in Mallacaland will require us to respond." (Empress Calhualyana, XIN)

Huenya: "The Huenyan Federation fully condemns the blatant violations of international law and diplomatic norms that took place today in Mallacaland. We call upon King Hassan and his advisors to retract their hostile actions against the Lauchenoirian Embassy, as well as Lauchenoirian nationals there. As part of our national platform of conscience-based diplomacy and trade relations, the Huenyan Federation will be forced to decline any diplomatic or trade relations with Mallacaland moving forward if these actions are not reversed, and if the current government does not allow for a viable path forward to democracy." (Vice-Speaker Tiacihitli, Federal News Service)

Conflict intensifies in Mallacaland

The ongoing conflict in Mallacaland shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, the uprising has escalated into what appears to now be a full-on civil war.

The government of King Hassan has been overthrown by his own Royal Guard, and the King has fled the capital. In his place, Hassan Ahmar, the commander of the Royal Guard, has seized power. Ahmar has been proclaimed the new King by the Regent and Council of Emirs, apparently under duress. King Hassan's whereabouts are currently unknown, although it is speculated that he may have fled with his remaining followers to seek shelter among warlords outside of Mallacaland. It is believed that he is attempting to flee to a friendly state such as Xiomera, in an attempt to establish a government in exile.

A group of Mallacan naval forces also attempted to attack Slokaisian naval units, resulting in a Slokaisian counter-attack and heavy damage to a Mallacan destroyer. A Slokaisian Coast Guard ship was also slightly damaged. In retaliation, Slokaisian air force units attacked a Mallacan airfield, causing heavy damage.

A group of Mallacan rebels have reportedly seized an armory from the Mallacan military, gaining control of a large supply of weapons. This has raised fears that the unrest in Mallacaland may morph into a three-way conflict between supporters of the former King Hassan, the new King Ahmar and the royal guard, and the rebels under the banner of Mallacaland Rising. Allegations of foreign involvement in the form of Milintican guerrillas have also been brought forth. In a formal statement today, the Milintican government denied official involvement and said that "any Milinticans in Mallacaland are acting on their own, acting on their personal values and love of freedom". The Milintican government said that it would not prevent its citizens from traveling to Mallacaland "as that would be an affront to their freedom and free will."

Xiomera accuses opposition of coup plot, moves to shut down Unification Party

In an unexpected move, the Xiomeran government today announced that the Unification Party has been banned and its leaders detained after an alleged plot to overthrow the government.

Cuicanan, Xiomera's Minister of Justice, announced that longtime opposition leader Cozamalotl and many other members of the Unification Party have been arrested in connection to a recent armed assault on an Imperial Police garrison in the Zipacpepe neighborhood of the Xiomeran capital, Tlālacuetztla. The assault, which claimed the lives of three Imperial Police officers, "was part of an evil plot by the Unification Party to reverse the results of the January elections, in which their agenda was resoundingly rejected by the Xiomeran people," Cuicanan said. The Minister of Justice further added that the alleged plot was "supported and aided by foreign powers, and by the separatists calling themselves Huenyans." The Minister of Justice said that the detained Unification Party members will stand trial in one month on charges of high treason.

The Xiomeran Minister of State, Toquauhtli, also claimed that foreign powers, as yet unnamed, aided the alleged plot and warned that "further foreign terrorism or incitement to violence within Xiomera will result in a decisive and definitive Imperial response." The Minister of State also accused Milintica of involvement, a charge the Milintican government denied with the same claim of "volunteer civilian action" as claimed in Mallacaland.

Xiomera's electoral commission announced that a new set of elections will be held next month to replace the Unification Party members of the Imperial Parliament with members of the Xiomeran Citizens' Party, a move which will cement Xiomera's emerging status as a one-party state.

The Huenyan counterpart of the Unification Party of Xiomera, the UP-H, and the Central Committee of the Unification Party both issued statements condeming the ban on the Xiomeran wing of their party. "This move to ban the only opposition party left in Xiomera is just the latest evidence of the growing tyranny there," Cuetzhual, the president of the UP-H, said. "Our party is not involved in violence in any way and disavows the use of force in achieving political or societal change. There may well have been a plot to use force against Xiomera's government. Their government is one of the worst users of state-sponsored violence in the IDU, and such violence tends to spur a violent response from the oppressed. But our party was not involved, and Xiomera is using the incident in Zipacpepe as an excuse to suppress any political dissent."

The Chairperson of the Unification Party, Tiacihitli (who is also the Vice-Speaker of the Huenyan Federation) called the move against the UP-X "a vile suppression of dissent by an increasingly tyrannical regime bent on total control" and demanded the immediate release of Cozamalotl and the other Unification Party leaders who were detained. He also urged the international community to place pressure on Xiomera to release the opposition leaders.

DTNS reporter detained in Xiomera

Antoine Broussard, DTNS reporter assigned to the Huenya beat, during a March 2021 interview

In what is being described as a "blatant violation of freedom of the press," a reporter with the Democratic Times News Service has been detained by Xiomeran authorities and is currently being held incommunicado by the Imperial Police.

Antoine Broussard, a reporter assigned to the Huenya beat for DTNS, was interviewing local residents of the town of Culhuaca, in southern Xiomera, yesterday when he was arrested, according to eyewitness reports. Broussard has not been seen since his arrest, and Xiomeran authorities have refused repeated requests from DTNS to answer inquiries about his well-being, where he is being detained, or on what charges. A Xiomeran lawyer acting on behalf of DTNS was also threatened with arrest by Imperial Police officers after trying to obtain further information on behalf of DTNS and Broussard's family.

"The arrest of Antoine Broussard is meant to deter the press from doing their job, which is to report on the events taking place in Xiomera. It is an attempt to intimidate both Xiomeran and international reporters from covering events in Xiomera, with the threat of arbitrary arrest and detention. It is an unconscionable violation of freedom of the press, and we urge the international community to demand that the Xiomeran authorities immediately provide proof of Antoine's well-being and the reasons they are holding him, as well as access to both legal counsel and consular support," Katelyn Thomas, editor-in-chief of DTNS, said in a statement released today.

Broussard, along with other DTNS reporters, was investigating what appears to be a massive internal crackdown taking place within Xiomera. Reports have begun to emerge of mass arrests of anyone who has supported rivals to the now-dominant Xiomeran Citizens' Party, such as the banned Unification Party. Purges have also been reportedly taking place within the Xiomeran armed forces, security forces and civilian government to ensure loyalty to Empress Calhualyana and the XCP. Other DTNS reporters have been tracking and interviewing people fleeing from the Xiomeran crackdown, with refugees beginning to appear in Huenya, Eiria and even as far away as Lauchenoiria. The Huenyan government, in particular, has told DTNS that a sudden surge in people fleeing across the border into Huenya has begun to strain the resources of the already struggling emerging state. Witnesses have told DTNS that Broussard was interviewing followers of a dissident priest named Xayacama, who was arrested recently for denouncing the XCP, when he was himself detained.

The Xiomeran government, as of this time, has refused any comment and has not acknowledged the incident.

Slokais Islands representative faces treason trial

John Woods, a Representative in the Slokaisian Legislature, is currently on trial facing treason charges.

The charges stem from accusations that Woods conspired with the United Front against the Slokaisian government. Woods is also suspected of killing a SIBI officer. Woods has pled not guilty, claiming that he was forced by the United Front to assist them. Woods has tried to portray himself as the victim, a defense strategy that Havier-Walls Franandez, Socialist representative for Victoria, said "disrespects all the people who have been victims of the United Front."

A committee of the Slokaisian Legislature voted 5-2 to forward the charges against Woods to the House. From there, the entire Legislature will vote on whether or not to forward the matter to the Supreme Court. If the matter is forwarded to the Supreme Court, Woods will face a lifetime ban from government office, with potentially much more serious ramifications.
