Series of terrorist attacks rocks Slokais Islands, Eiria
A series of terrorist attacks has hit the Slokais Islands and Eiria.
The first attack occurred in Geminus, the Eirian capital, and targeted the Slokais Islands embassy located in the city's 4th District. Eirian officials reported that a remote explosive device was detonated in the Embassy bathrooms, causing severe damage. Twenty-five people were killed in the blast, and thirty more injured. The Eirian terrorist group TALFL claimed "partial responsibility" for the attack, though they did not identify their co-conspirators or explain why they had targeted the embassy of the Slokais Islands. The Slokais Island Bureau of Investigation, the New Liverpool Police, the Geminus Municipal Police, and the Solar Guard Counterterrorism Taskforce are investigating the attack on the embassy.
After the attack in Geminus, multiple attacks struck the Slokais Islands. In Provincetown, a hotel in the city was attacked by terrorists who killed Robert Von Mark, a defense contractor for the Slokasian government. In New Liverpool, a terrorist stabbed a police officer and was then arrested as he entered the Embassy District to attack the Eirian embassy there.
In Kaijan City, a major bridge in the city was destroyed by an explosion, and part of the city's convention center was also heavily damaged. During the attack on the convention center, the terrorists have reportedly taken Ambassador Tom Yu of Laeral as a hostage, along with other officials. The terrorists there have reportedly demanded huge ransoms for the Ambassador and the other officials to be released, and has threatened to kill them if a rescue attempt is made or their demands not met within 14 days.
A state of emergency has been declared, with citizens being urged to stay home.
Eusebio Ramos, a counter-terrorism expert with the think tank Renaissance Theory, told DTNS that a pro-Kaijan independence group of some sort is most likely behind the attacks. "Kaijan Island has always been a restive part of the Slokais Islands, with an armed insurrection occurring there from 2007 to 2011. It is highly likely that these latest attacks are related to all of that," Ramos said.
Sunemian elections: Progressives roll, mostly, on a strong election night
Results from the Sunemian legislative elections on November 18th, 2020:
In Osaina state, the Progress Party was able to retain control of the government, flipping four seats to their side. They now hold 40 seats, just enough for the majority. One shocker was the race involving progressive icon Mark Linwood. Linwood was narrowly defeated in his re-election bid for the seat in his conservative-leaning district. The Progress Party should still be able to pass their desired legislative agenda, as fellow liberal/progressive parties the Liberal Democrats and Renew Sunemia hold 40 seats and one seat respectively. The party has announced that passing legislation giving everyone in the state broadband access will be a priority, as Osaina state lags behind the rest of Sunemia in this regard.
Seat count in Osaina:
Progress: 40 (+5 flips,-1 loss)
Conservative Front: 29 (-6 losses, +1 flips)
Liberal Democrats: 10 (+1 flips)
Renew Sunemia: 1 (0)
In Stanford state, the Liberal Democrats picked up six seats. Renew Sunemia gained one as well. Liberal Democrat Jennifer Maswell will continue as First Minister. The Liberal Democrats have continued to maintain their strong showing in this state, which has a major presence from both the Sunemian tech industry and the education sector as well.
Seat count in Stanford:
Liberal Democrats: 56 (+6)
Conservative Front: 27 (-7)
Progress: 19 (0)
Renew Sunemia (+1)
In Nashana state, the Liberal Democrats made huge gains among the suburbs of Nashai and Floiris, ousting several incumbents and gaining themselves a majority. The priorities for the new Liberal Democratic majority will be increasing funding for hospitals and health centers, as well as passing ranked-choice voting. The new majority also wants to create a High Tech Park to boost jobs. Voters in the Nashai suburbs swung towards the Liberal Democrats in part due to the party's support for increased healthcare funding, a popular proposal in an area dependent on jobs in the healthcare industry.
Seat count in Nashana:
Liberal Democrats: 54 (+10)
Conservative Front: 28 (-11)
Progress: 22 (+1)
Renew Sunemia: 2 (0)
In Marin state, the progressive parties continued to roll, due to the gains among the fast-growing suburbs of Lakewood. The Liberal Democrats gained 7 seats and Renew Sunemia gained two. The Liberal/Renew Sunemia government will continue prioritizing their climate agenda, with the goal of making Marin a carbon-zero state between 2027 and 2032.
Seat count in Marin:
Liberal Democrats: 47 (+7)
Conservative Front: 26 (-9)
Progress: 7 (0)
Renew Sunemia: 5 (+2)
In Beldes state, the Conservative Front found its one bright spot of election night by retaining control of government here. Experts said this was due to their dominance in the exurbs and suburbs of Gallei, the major city of the state.
Seat count in Beldes:
Conservative Front: 76 (-2)
Liberal Democrats: 12 (+2)
Progress: 2 (0)
Xiomeran government to put former Emperor on trial
The government of the Xiomeran Empire announced today that the former Emperor Xochiuhue will be placed on public trial, beginning on December 1st, 2020, in the nation's capital.
Cuicanan, Xiomeran Secretary of Justice, announced that the former Emperor will be facing a mammoth list of accusations numbering in the hundreds of charges. Among them, he is facing charges of abuse of power, treason, anti-Xiomeran conduct, and several hundred charges of murder, manslaughter and assault related to the violent suppression of protests around Xiomera during his brief reign.
The former Emperor also stands accused of engineering a plot to kidnap Olivia Pierre, the daughter of Kerlian Councillor Pauline Pierre. The former Emperor reportedly ordered the kidnapping of Pierre as part of a scheme to place blame on the government of Libertas Omnium Maximus, in an attempt to distract Kerlile from its involvement in the Xiomeran civil war. In a brief statement, Empress Calhualyana apologized to both the Kerlian and Maximusian governments for Xochiuhue's actions, and said that the Xiomeran government is "fully committed" to ensuring that the former Emperor faces justice for his actions.
In another slate of charges, the former Emperor is accused of demanding that his military commanders launch nuclear strikes against the separatist Huenyan government, as well as nations allied with it, in an attempt to salvage his deteriorating position in the civil conflict in Xiomera. Xiomeran officials confirmed today that it was this "heinous and immoral order" which forced the hand of Calhualyana, then Security Secretary for the Xiomeran Empire, and led to the coup that removed Xochiuhue from power. "Our new Empress acted to save both Xiomera, and the world, from a nuclear catastrophe," the Secretary of Justice said.
Attorneys for the former Emperor have already stated that they intend to pursue an insanity defense for the former Emperor, citing both the plot involving Olivia Pierre and his alleged order to launch nuclear weapons as proof of his mental condition. His attorneys have also cited the original order issued by Calhualyana, which stated that she was removing Xochiuhue due to mental incapacity under Article 14 of the Xiomeran laws of succession, as proof that the former Emperor should be found innocent by reason of mental illness. However, Secretary Cuicanan said that his prosecutorial team "will clearly and fully demonstrate" that the former Emperor was not insane, but "a cruel and murderous ruler who was fully aware of what he was doing."
The trial is expected to be televised as well as shown live online.
DTNS reporters have been able to speak with Xiomeran citizens in several cities around Xiomera, and have reported that most Xiomerans are "in a state of shock" as the full extent of the allegations against the former Emperor is beginning to emerge. "He would have destroyed us all," Apalquetl, a pastry chef in the city of Tequixquiac, told one DTNS reporter. "We knew he was a cruel ruler, but none of us imagined it was this bad."
Xomotli, a computer programmer in the city of Huacoyoaco, told reporters this: "Xochiuhue would have led our Empire, and the world, to utter destruction. We are fortunate that Calhualyana intervened before it was too late, and I am confident that our new Empress will ensure that he faces justice."
Netlcoātl Islands begins expelling Xiomerans
The separatist government in the former Xiomeran territory of the Netlcoātl Islands has confirmed reports that it has begun expelling those of Xiomeran ethnicity from the islands.
Ahuac, the new leader of the Netlcoātl Islands, has ordered that all those of Xiomeran ethnicity must depart the islands no later than midnight on November 28th, 2020. Any who refuse, or have not left by that date, will be forcibly expelled from the islands, the islands' provisional government declared in an official statement. "Xiomerans oppressed us and siphoned off our wealth to send back to Tlālacuetztla for centuries. We will reclaim what is ours from their tyranny," the statement read.
Reaction from the other governments involved in the civil conflict in Huenya has been mixed. The government of the Huenyan Federation has issued a statement acknowledging that the islanders have reason to be angry, but should "direct their anger at the Xiomeran government, not at innocent civilians." The Huenyan government has sent a negotiator to try to convince the islanders to halt the expulsions. Many Xiomeran refugees from the islands have been crossing the strait that separates the islands from Huenya, and the new Huenyan government is reportedly having trouble handling the sudden surge in crossings. Officials in the Necatli region, which borders the Netlcoātl Islands and is seeing the highest surge in border crossings, have expressed the greatest frustration. The mayor of Acalan, Alluchi, told a DTNS reporter that he "didn't even want the Xiomerans that were already here, and now we have to take in the ones that the islanders are kicking out, and it's not fair." The leader of the Necatli region, Huacue, told DTNS that he remains committed to helping those in need, and has reportedly reprimanded the mayor of Acalan for his comments.
Meanwhile, in Tlālacuetztla, the government of the Xiomeran Empire warned that "Xiomera will take action in response" if its nationals are harmed or threatened by the islanders, and repeated its call for the international community to make sure that Xiomerans in lands that the Empire is ceding control of are protected by any successor governments. Empress Calhualyana has announced that if Xiomerans in the Netlcoātl Islands are harmed, or forcibly deprived of their wealth and possessions, that the Empire will take actions "beginning with sanctions" and escalating from there if necessary. The Xiomeran government had previously managed to negotiate a withdrawal from Manauia Island that included guarantees for the safety of Xiomerans remaining on the island, but the Netlcoātl Islands has rejected any negotiations whatsoever with the Xiomeran government.
Milintica spearheads new alliance with former Xiomeran territories
The new governments of the Netlcoātl Islands and Manauia Island announced that they have begun discussions with the Milintican government to form a cooperative trade and diplomatic alliance. The new alliance has labeled itself the Alliance of Non-Aligned Nations (ANN).
"The purpose of this agreement will be to ensure that smaller, developing and emerging states in Caxcana are able to help each other. It is no secret that the larger powers of the world can bring great power to bear in influencing, or even forcing, smaller states or poorer ones to follow a certain path. By banding together and leveraging our strength both in numbers and in ideas, we can make sure that our nations are able to retain their independence and their voice on the world stage," President Matōchmizalo of Milintica announced in a statement from Haven House, the presidential residence. While the ANN will consist initially of these three nations, the Milintican leader said that they would be open to accepting other nations that may be interested and meet the ANN criteria of being a non-aligned, smaller or developing state.
The new political alignment is expected to first make its presence known in the upcoming talks in Jinyu, Laeral to end the civil conflict in Xiomera. The three members have reportedly agreed to push the international community to recognize the independence of both the Netlcoātl Islands and Manauia Island, and also to place "boundaries" on the Xiomeran Empire to ensure that it does not attempt to regain control over any of its former territories.
Newly independent Maraix appoints new diplomats
Having recently gained its independence from Laeral, Maraix has named "honorary" diplomatic representation to three nations, according to an announcement by Association President Karen Kreider.
Auguste Kerouac has been named Honorary Ambassador to Legionas; he will be based in Bayview. Perpetua Toafa-Efu has been named Honorary Consul to Legionas, and will be based on North Indigo Island.
Chad Kreider, the son of the President, has been named Honorary Ambassador to Laeral, and will be based in Laeralsford. Hélène Li, the daughter of the Maraix treasurer, has been named Honorary Consul to Laeral, and will be based in Hanshui. Their appointments did cause some speculation among islanders as to the legitimacy of the appointments, and whether they may somehow represent nepotism, but a communication from President Kreider seems to have resolved those concerns.
Xitlali Cuateco will serve as Honorary Consul to Xiomera, based in Tlālacuetztla. Some residents of Maraix did also express concern that it may be unwise to appoint a representative to Xiomera, given the current civil conflict taking place there. However, the Xiomeran government expressed appreciation for the appointment, with Xiomeran Secretary of State Toquauhtli reportedly offering to appoint a diplomatic representative to Maraix in exchange.
Shuellian, Xiomeran governments denounce WOE
In an announcement on the National Shuellian Broadcasting Network, Director Sascha Hoffman of International Affairs made an announcement calling on the Lauchenoirian government to take action against the environmental group "Watchdogs of Our Earth", labeling them an "eco-terrorist" group.
The NSBN report described WOE as "a radical anarcho-primitivist organization, with the goal of destroying modern society and any semblance of civility - reducing humanity to a pre-industrial age." The report went on to accuse WOE of launching several guerrilla attacks against Watchtower mercenaries in Xiomera who were working on behalf of that government. Director Hoffman stated that WOE was likely to continue these attacks in Xiomera, as shown by the destruction of helicopters and the murders of several Imperial soldiers over the course of the civil war, and if not stopped soon these attacks would be certain to spread to neighboring countries.
In a following statement on the XIN network, Empress Calhualyana thanked Director Hoffman for his "strong statement in favor of international stability and against terrorism," and also accused WOE of using "anarchist terrorists" to interfere in the Xiomeran civil conflict. "In large part because of foreign actors like WOE, chaos and violence were brought to Xiomera, resulting in the split of our nation. This form of foreign-manipulated terrorism cannot be allowed to continue if nations are to remain stable and our world to remain peaceful," the Empress said. After her remarks, the new Xiomeran Secretary of Security, Quihichua, confirmed that Xiomera has declared WOE to be "an eco-terrorist organization" and placed them on the nation's watch list of terrorist organizations.
