Pyramid of Misfortune: a contest RP
#1

What the game is:

Pyramid of Misfortune is the longest-running game show/contest in Xiomeran history. For fifteen seasons, it's provided Xiomerans with amusement watching people try to outwit other people, and the malicious intent of those running the game, to win big prizes. Now, to boost ratings, the X[sub]3[/sub] network is opening the contest up to foreigners for the first time. Xiomerans vs. the world: who can win it all? It's time to find out.

How the game works:

In the Xiomeran capital, the X[sub]3[/sub] Network Studios has on part of its property a giant outdoor ampitheater, surrounding a pyramid that stands 100 feet (ten stories) tall. The pyramid is constructed to resemble a scaled-down version of the much-taller main building of the Palace of Flowers. At each of the first nine stories, a flat platform forms a narrow terrace. A combination of randomly scattered indentations and rock climbing holds leads up to each terrace. The pyramid has four sides; four contestants compete against each other at a time.

The goal of the challenge is simple, in theory: climb up to the tenth story of the pyramid and hit a giant red button. Whoever does that first, wins the contest.

But the game would be boring if it just involved climbing. So, the people inside the pyramid and at the top of it will be doing their very best to make sure your contestant doesn't make it to the top. You can expect "boulders" and "rocks" (made of a non-crushing polymer) to get tossed at you, slick substances to suddenly get dumped right where you're trying to grab, trap doors into the pyramid to open suddenly underneath you, "snakes" (more fake props) to get thrown at you en masse, "pyramid defenders" to pop out of suddenly-opened windows to try to knock you off, and so on.

Not only that, but your fellow contestants will have one shot, if you're doing too well, to try to take you down. Each contestant's "coach" will have a remote control, with three buttons corresponding to the three sides that the other contestants are on. The coach will be able, once per run, to press one of those three buttons to try to slow down, or knock off, a rival contestant to help their own player out with a "coach's challenge" random event. Your coach will only get to use that trick once, on one rival, so choose wisely when to use it!

How actual "gameplay" will take place:

I'll be posting what challenges the game throws at your player: rocks, oil slick, whatever it may be. You then post your response as to how you plan to evade it and make it to the next stage. I will then let random choice decide your fate, by rolling a d6 dice. If the roll is 4-6, you made it; no further challenges needed. But if the roll is 1-3, your attempt to evade will fail. I will then roll a "saving throw" for you, giving your contestant a chance to "recover" from whatever disastrous choice they made that is threatening to hurl them off the pyramid. If your "saving throw" is good....you "recover", and climb on. But if you fail the second throw....your contestant finds themselves bouncing on the safety cushions at the base of the pyramid, and the game is over for them.

It's a Xiomeran contest. No one said it would be easy.

Whoever makes it to the top of the pyramid first, or is just left clinging to the pyramid after everyone else falls off, is the winner. Depending on how many contestants there are, there will either be one round, or several "elimination" rounds leading to a final playoff.

You can use your "coach's challenge" trick at any point in the contest just by posting in the IC thread that your coach is using it, and who they're using it on.

What you can win:

The grand prize of 1 million quetzals, with a matching prize to be donated to the charity of the contestant's choosing. Also, the ability to say you beat all the other countries competing and claim bragging rights. If you don't like Xiomera, you also get the added bonus of rubbing it in the faces of the Xiomerans that you beat them at their own game in their own capital. If you really dislike Xiomera, you can choose HNN (the former XUN) as the charity you want to donate your matching charity prize to. Big Grin

How to enter:

Your country sends up to two contestants, and one coach, to Xiomera to play the game. You can choose any field or profession, or experience, for your contestants and coach. The game, like Xiomera in general, makes no distinctions to gender, so your contestant can be male or female. All contest runs will be mixed gender.

If you want to enter, post in this thread the following:

1) A bio of your contestant(s), with the following information:

City and country of residence:

2) A bio of your contestant's coach, with the following information:

Age:
City and country of residence:

Age: 34
City and country of residence: Jade Harbor, Zamastan
Occupation: Private Security Contractor
"Ever since I lost my wife Amanda in a tragic hot-air ballooning accident, I've struggled to make ends meet for myself and my child. The security business is good and all, but I want to show my little 6 year old son, Han, that his dad is the coolest guy. I want to show him that I persevered all for him, and if I win, I'm putting the money towards his future."

Name: Jayna Harsi
Age: 29
City and country of residence: Lower Tariel, Zamastan
Occupation: Scuba-diving instructer
"Ever since I lost my fiancee in a tragic harpooning accident, I've wondered what my purpose is. Then I realized - I need to prove myself! This contest will definetely be my defining moment. No longer will I languish in the depths of the Zamastanian coastal reefs, surrounded by groupers and snappers and other fish that blame me for my fiancee's death, no, no, no. I will THRIVE in the victory of a million quetzals."

The Coach

Name: Timothy Earns
Age: 41
City and country of residence: Whusville, Zamastan
Occupation: Former police officer
"I've known Warren since he was a teenager. The kid had spirit, and he's been through a lot. His tragedy motivates and pushes him, and his job gives him lots of time and excuse to be perfectly fit. The guy is gonna win this. As for Jayna, I know her tragic story will also push her to victory. Hell, they both are going to be able to work through the pain of losing loved ones, whether it be in the form of a burning balloon crash or a harpoon piercing the spleen incident. They can push through the pain. They will make their friends and family proud."

Maximusian Contestants

Name: Kyle Martins
Age: 36
City and country of residence: Burgundy, Eno County
Occupation: Accountant
Quote: "I may work a desk job but I am in very good condition. I bike and jog on the weekends and am coming to Xiomera to prove that you can remain fit even if you work a job where you don't get much fresh air. I also come from a family of athletes. My father played in the minor league for the Burgundy Phalanx and my sister was a college starter on her lacrosse team. I would be adding to the family legacy and proving to my father that I am more than just a good looking, successful, intelligent, man, who makes a six figure salary at the age of 36. I would be proving that I was also a true athlete. He would be so proud of me."

Name: Angela Willis
Age: 33
City and country of residence: Litudiem, Veii county
Occupation: Nutritionalist
Quote: "When I was 30 I nearly died in a fatal Segway accident where I fractured my index finger. Rehab was tough and it made me seriously reconsider who I was as a person. After months of existential crisis I came to this defining conclusion: I should keep doing all the stuff I was doing but do it better. So I trained harder, studied harder, worked harder, and spent slightly less time going out on one-night-stands with my co-workers. Mostly, I stopped going out with my co-workers. My boss says that creates a less than ideal working environment. In any case, I am a changed woman. Now I only go out with my clients. I saw this competition and figured, "why not?" I am in good shape and have the competitive drive that will edge out my opponents.

The Coach

Name: Dan Jones
Age: 56
City and country of residence: Iustitia City, Iustitia County
Occupation: Volunteer Firefighter
Quote: "An accountant with an inferiority complex and an overly flirtatious nutritionalist, you think this is going to end in any way other than an epic event that is totally worth a watch? Besides, it sure beats spending all day getting cats out of trees. Kyle is a dedicated guy. I have never seen anyone answer my texts in full paragraphs. That kinda drive is what will make him win. The same drive that made him go through two masters degrees.

Angela. She also has a certain set of qualifications. Can't think of them off the top of my head but I know she is qualified. She has suffered a lot in her life. I couldn't imagine what she was going through when she named her finger on the wall while riding that Segway. I have had burning buildings fall on me and have received 3rd degree burns and I don't think I could take what she has taken. That sort of resilience makes you strong.

I think perhaps we should call off the rest of this and finish it where it is?
