Main Parties
Liberal Party
The Liberal Party is the largest party in Lauchenoiria. President Leanna Walker, who was deposed during the 2018 civil war, was a Liberal, and in Parliament the Liberals were the majority partner in a coalition with the Greens until the coup. The Liberal Party is a centrist party, which has existed in its current form since the legalisation of capitalist parties in 1993, and is considered a direct successor of the pre-1952 Liberal Party.
The party is economically centre-right and socially liberal, and is currently led by Josephine Alvarez, who replaced controversial former Prime Minister Laura Moore in December 2018.
Social Issues
The party supports keeping the current state education system while also allowing private alternatives but with scrutiny. They also want to maintain the National Health Service, but also allow private providers for those who can and want to pay. They believe Lauchenoiria should be a world-leading nation in terms of disability inclusion, especially now when we need to repair our reputation.
Economic Issues
The Liberals want to continue the transition to full capitalism as per the referendum mandate. They also want to make some budget cuts in order to get the deficit down to a manageable level, and avoid taking on any more debt if at all possible.
Security Issues
The Liberals believe the security services must have some, but limited, powers to protect the country from events like coups while also maintaining individual liberty. They also want to permit citizens to own guns with a license & background checks. They also want to keep military spending at current levels, balance need for defence with need to make cuts to the budget.
International Issues
They believe Lauchenoiria needs to strengthen ties with Coalition countries that saved us from dictatorship and ensure that in the future we can be allies. They also believe in the need to encourage immigration and discourage emigration in order to build the economy and deal with the fallout from the war.
Constitutional Issues
The Liberals believe the right to individual liberty both socially and economically should be in the constitution, the parliament should be bicameral and there should be extra anti-coup measures.
In the aftermath of the war, the Liberals say: “we need to all come together after the war, respect the mandate given by the people in the capitalism referendum, and move forward from this conflict.”
Communist Party
The Communist Party is the second-largest party in Lauchenoiria, until recently the largest. Following a revolution in 1952, the Communists held unchallenged power until 1993 when they were forced to legalise capitalist political parties. The Communists remained in coalition governments, even then, until 2014. They were behind the coup attempt which started the 2018 civil war.
The party is economically far-left, authoritarian and somewhat socially liberal. It is currently led by Javier Flynn, as interim leader, before the leadership election scheduled for April.
Social Issues
The Communists want to maintain the NHS, not allow private providers, and keep the current system of all schools being state-run, state-funded and on a level with each other.
Economic Issues
They want to return the economy to a centralised communist system, ban all private enterprise, and ignore the capitalism referendum result due to suspected foreign influence.
Security Issues
They want to keep all pre-war gun restrictions in place, increase military spending in case of further foreign invasions to defend Lauchenoiria against the capitalist countries. They believe government surveillance must increase in order to ensure the safety of the population from terrorist attacks and those who would conspire with foreign forces to subvert our system of government.
International Issues
They want to cut ties with interfering capitalist countries, as well as with Kerlile for their manipulation of us, stop both immigration and emigration. They believe in the need to stabilise the country and that means stabilising the population.
Constitutional Issues
They believe the 1952 constitution should be maintained, that the part of the Haven Accords mandating a new constitution was unnecessary and they should stick to the ’52 constitution as much as possible.
In the aftermath of the war, the Communists say: “in order to prevent further conflict, we must not use the results of the fixed capitalism referendum.”
Green Party
The Green Party is a centre-left environmentalist political party, who were the junior partner in the coalition from 2014 until the coup. They believe in protecting the environment at all costs, and grew popular among people more neutral on the capitalism-communism debate that the other main parties focused on.
The party is economically centre-left and very socially liberal. They are currently led by Lucie Scott who spent the entirety of the civil war as a political prisoner in the hands of the Chaher regime.
Social Issues
The Greens want to work to make the NHS more environmentally friendly, and are opposed to private providers but open to compromise on that. They want to add environmental education to the curriculum, mandate all schools have field trips where they discuss environmental issues. They believe accessibility for disabled people is really important but only if it does not come at the expense of the environment or else everyone will die.
Economic Issues
They want to prioritise the environment even at the expense of the economy, and believe in respecting the capitalism referendum mandate.
Security Issues
They want to keep all pre-war gun restrictions in place, slash military spending, avoid further conflict, focus on the environment not destructive warfare. They also believe privacy must be respected and so government surveillance must be curtailed.
International Issues
They want to work with the international community to protect the environment, ally with anyone who shares that aim. They say it is no surprise that people are emigrating because of the war, and also no surprise people are immigrating because of the climate, open the borders.
Constitutional Issues
They believe protections for the environment should be written into the constitution to ensure climate change doesn’t kill everyone.
In the aftermath of the war, the Greens say: “we must enact extra environmental measures to make up for the destruction caused by the war.”
Conservative Party
The Conservative Party is the fourth largest party, and the most economically right-wing mainstream party. They are also the most socially conservative of the mainstream parties, and tend to be supported by older people who were opposed to the 1952 regime.
The party is economically right-wing and socially conservative. They are currently led by Thomas Averforth, a wealthy businessman who spent the civil war out of the country.
Social Issues
They want to privatise the NHS, introduce a multi-payer scheme, allow any private schools that wish to set up, bring back grammar schools. They believe any social policy which damages the economy, such as mandating businesses to renovate to make buildings accessible, should not be allowed.
Economic Issues
They want to massively slash government spending in order to eliminate the deficit by 2021. They also want to hasten the transition, make full capitalism arrive faster.
Security Issues
They want to permit gun ownership with background checks, increase military spending somewhat to defend against Kerlile and other countries that would threaten democracy, and believe surveillance powers must increase so those who would subvert our democracy are caught and their plans prevented, including surveillance on politicians.
International Issues
They want to increase trade with other countries, get rid of regulations that hamper trade, seek out free trade deals, discourage immigration, allow emigration. They believe immigrants are destroying the economy, and that we should let all the poor flee the war if they want, then they’re not our problem.
Constitutional Issues
Lauchenoiria should be constitutionally capitalist (somehow), bicameral and grant the president more powers.
In the aftermath of the war, they say: “the Liberals can’t be trusted to look out for the nation, they are weak, only the Conservatives can implement the referendum result.”
Social Democratic Party
The SDP is a centre-left political party characterised by their opposition to the 1952 communist regime but while maintaining support for poorer Lauchenoirians. While popular in the early 2000s, they have seen their support decline in recent years.
They are centre-left and socially mixed. They are led by Cassidy Laurens, who was among the political prisoners liberated from Ginsap Prison in a raid by the Lauchenoirian Resistance during the war.
Social Issues
They want to keep the NHS, allow very limited private alternatives, do not allow private schools, but allow a limited number of state-funded grammar schools, disability inclusion is important, as is ensuring disabled people can work and contribute to the economy.
Economic Issues
They want slightly increased government spending to help the economy grow and ensure people can get by, re-run the referendum in case of any foreign interference.
Security Issues
They want to loosen pre-war restrictions on guns SLIGHTLY, keep military spending near current levels, perhaps some cuts to focus on infrastructure projects, there must be a balance between individual liberty and fighting terrorism, and to that end, surveillance powers must increase slightly.
International Issues
They want to work with other countries which share our values, increase trade, rebuild relations that became strained during the war.
Constitutional Issues
They believe in a bicameral parliament, limit presidential power, require explicitly all votes of no confidence to have 48 hours’ notice beforehand.
In the aftermath of the war, they say: “both the Liberals and Communists cannot be trusted, the war shows that, vote SDP for a third way.”
