The voice came from Mindy Mendel, defacto leader of the Filament Steel and head advisor of the Branchian Intelligence Department. Usually she adopted a position much closer to home but intelligence had warned of an upcoming attack on Huenya and she wanted to be there to assess the situation personally. Now, with the siege one the city in full swing, she could finally make a move. A move that began with finally hoisting their flag.
The Filament Steel flag was, in particular, a symbol of their message. It was how they let people know who they were and pushed any blame away from watchful eyes looking into their real operations. It was a symbol of fear for many, especially the governments that had something to hide. The flag was black, with silver threads sewn throughout. The surface reflected the light. Across the surface, the twisted, severed head of a dragon is crossed with three chains, painstakingly embroidered into the cloth. The original design had never been made for printing but rather for hand sewing, but the effect was unmatchable. And besides, nobody touched the flag of the Filament Steel.
Now it hung proudly from the side of their compound, finally taking its rightful place as a pawn in this action. And it had the added side effect of being very noticeable. Mindy had no doubt the Golden blade would eventually come to them.
And that’s exactly what she wanted too. She’d assessed the situation — the level of destruction in so short a time by so small a terrorist force. Would they eventually prevail? The autocrats usually did, and if they did, the BID very much wanted to get their fingers into the pants of the winning side. They were dealing with enough problems with the whole Nils situation. But that was the magic of the Filament Steel too. If the Golden Blade were beaten back, it wouldn’t matter. Any blame for involvement in the Huenyan schemes would fall solely on a terrorist organization — an organization that by all accounts and purposes had no connection to the government at all, and had in fact been condemned by them on multiple occasions. There was something to say about the clever ruthlessness of the Branchian government.
