Trade Deal with Milintica Passes Senate, earns Chancellor's Signature

In the final vote today, the proposed trade deal with Milintica was passed 315-94. The vote held an astonishing 41 abstentions, mostly coming from Progressive Senators and a few Serso members skeptical about some particular details of the bill.

The deal, pioneered by the Chancellor and Milintica's President Matōchmizalo, would allow Eirian companies to sell much-needed consumer goods and electronics to Milintican consumers. In exchange, Milintican natural goods, specifically metals like tin, lead, and zinc, can be sold to Eirian companies. In addition, Milintican companies can introduce goods and Restaurants to Eirian markets, such as a vegetarian meat substitute branded Milimeat, or chains of Milintican Restaurants.

Many Eirian business leaders have expressed support for the new agreement, excited for the opportunity to cater to a new foreign market. "It's an unprecedented opportunity, especially in a place like Milintica." Says Janis Melbārdis, Owner of the popular Eirian restaurant chain 'Iveta's Ladle'. "The Milintican Economy, although socialized, is full of potential for economic gain. A whole new market, full of curious consumers longing for new products… it's a businessperson's dream."

Some economists, such as Elena Volkov, Professor of Economics at the Vaughn Institute in Central Geminus, believe that this trade deal is only the beginning of new prosperity in the region. "Opening up a near-isolated economy will have tremendous positive effects on the region's economy as a whole. And I doubt any of the leaders in the region will let this opportunity go to waste." She said in an interview with ENN. "I have a feeling this is only the beginning of new economic opportunities in Caxcana."

Defecting Xiomeran Athletes Granted Temporary Asylum In Eiria

In a standard announcement this morning, Minister Alice Lancaster announced that the Minister of Diplomacy has granted two Xiomeran Athletes temporary asylum while their applications are processed. "We are following all of the regular procedures as these applications are processed."

When asked about the likelihood that Metotoa, a Basketball athlete, and Cihitlina, a Fencer, would be approved for political asylum, Lancaster said this: "It would be unprofessional of me to speculate. However, that being said, they have met the Significant Danger status for temporary asylum. Regardless of if their applications are approved, according to Eirian law regarding refoulement, we cannot force them to return to Xiomera."

Minister Lancaster also commented on Xiomeran Prime Minister Toquihu's statements saying that the athletes had been "Brainwashed" and "Kidnapped" by the Eirian Government. "No member of any Eirian governmental agency has brainwashed or kidnapped any member of the Xiomeran Olympic Delegation. Such accusations are preposterous, and more suited for conspiracy theorists than elected officials. We cannot and have not controlled a single Xiomeran athlete. We invite the International Olympic Committee to investigate, if they so wish. But such an investigation would be a waste of time and resources."
