A new player enters the Mallacaland Election
On Saturday, General Aziz of the Mallacaland Army laid out how he wanted the election to go, in his short speech he laid out his views. "But, I am here to address all of you, in regards to the election, this election will shape the future of the country, you need to be there, why because Socialists like the For the People party could destroy the nation" he then said endorsed National Values. This statement by the General is a continued show of strength who has been in power in the country since the country unified in the 90s. Often King Abdin would collapse under overpressure from the Military, however in 2016 when he died and his son took over, he often made decisions on his own, in fact in 2018, King Abdin II almost called elections but had them canceled after pressure from the Military. In fact, the military helped fund many projects such as the M-5 Highway. However, with his speech he looks to show his power over the country.
We talked with many in Mallacaland who mixed reactions, we talked with Ahmed Mansuar Hadi who told that us that "General Aziz had the right to act the way he does, in fact, if I was still undecided I would vote for NVP after hearing his speech". However many disagreed including an office worker who told us that "It's wrong that people like that, use their power like that". He then told us he was going to vote for For the People, "In fact, because of his speech, I will vote for For The People just to make him mad" he joked.
We talked with Ethan Coopersmith of the Elections Studies Insitute and Director of the Department of East Hespian Studies at New Liverpool Univerity. "This is a common action by military leaders to show their power". He then said, "This is textbook military aggression, I am worried we may see a coup if the Military does get what they want".
The Mallacaland Election will take place in early June, and we will keep you updated here at the NL Daily
