Minority parties in Assembly question Xiomeran involvement
MFR, PAP, MIP demand government "gain more concessions" from Xiomeran government in exile
While the Milintican government's support of the Xiomeran government in exile, and its deal with Crown Prince Texōccoatl, have the support of most Milinticans, minority parties in the Representative Assembly have begun pushing President Matōchmizalo and Prime Minister Tupai Tapihana to demand "greater concessions" from the exile government in exchange for Milintican support.
"We are risking this conflict being brought to our own shores, should Emperor Xochiuhue win this civil war in Xiomera," Ikei Enoka, the premier of the Paora Alliance Party, told reporters before today's Assembly session. "If we are going to subject our country to the risk of Xiomeran hostility - for a conflict Milinticans, and the Paora especially, are not even part of really - we should be getting more from the Crown Prince's government." Enoka said that he wants the President and Prime Minister to demand greater trade concessions from the exile government of Xiomera, should they prevail in the conflict brewing there. Enoka said that Milintica should also seek unspecified "compensation" from the exile Xiomeran government once the government of Xochiuhue is overthrown.
The chairman of the Milintica Isolationist Party, Cizama, echoed Enoka's sentiments. Cizama said that Milintica "should be rewarded a lot more than we currently are from the government in exile" for its support, especially given the previously hostile relationship between the two countries. Cizama said that he wanted to see greater trade concessions as well, coupled with compensation to the families of those descended from those Milinticans who were originally exiled from Xiomera in 1387. Cizama said that he also wanted to see military aid to Milintica from Xiomera as compensation.
The Chairman of the Movement for Return party, Tachitle, said that he "wants the same demands as the MIP, but also wants our right to return to Xiomera, and our right to have the land and assets that Xiomerans stole from our ancestors returned to us, to also be explicitly part of any deal for continued support of the Crown Prince and the Empress". The MFR have long demanded a "right to return" to ancestral lands in western Huenya as a precondition for any lasting ties with the Xiomerans.
The three minority party leaders said that they plan to demand a meeting with the President and the Prime Minister "as soon as possible" to discuss their demands. They have pledged to raise the issue in the Representative Assembly if their demands are not met. President Matōchmizalo has previously described such demands as "nonstarters" and that he "will not haggle for money or have Milinticans present themselves as if they were mercenaries."
"Milinticans believe in fighting for what is right, not for what fills our pockets," the President said flatly when asked by reporters about the latest statements from the MIP, PAP and MFR.
Milintica to attend climate conference in Lauchenoiria
A Milintican delegation, led by Minister of the Environment Piki Herangi and Green Party of Milintica Environmental Committee Chairwoman Kahutea Tahana, arrived today in Elopolis to attend an international conference dedicated to discussing solutions to climate change.
"We are excited by the opportunity to bring these serious issues to the world's attention, and to discuss solutions with other nations," Herangi told reporters as the Milintican delegation arrived. The Minister said that the Milintican delegation plans to seek help from other nations in implementing the government's ambitions 2018 plan to combat climate change, as well as to push action on issues related to sea rise, an issue beginning to affect outlying Milintican islands.
VOP's Voice of Xiomera coverage
With the unexpected emergence of Empress Yauhmi, having escaped from prison, dominating recent headlines, one might be forgiven for overlooking the other events taking place in Xiomera. But despite the best efforts of the current Xiomeran government to hide behind its cyber-firewall, our sources have managed to get the following stories to you:
Xiomeran universities "no-go" zones: Multiple Xiomeran universities have reportedly become "no-go" zones for local and Imperial police, as angry students have taken control of their campuses in protest against the government. Protests have broken out at 85 Xiomeran universities at last count, and the number is growing, according to an ad-hoc group of dissident students who have been fighting the government, and their "official" students' group known as the XSA, for control of the campuses. Increasing numbers of Imperial soldiers are having to be deployed to try to bring the fractious campuses back under government control.
Xiomeran hospitals "refused to treat" ASI, government forces: In the cities of Xochiatipan, Oacalco, Ixtlán and Tacuitapa, Imperial military medics and security personnel had to be brought in to take over medical facilities when their staff went on strike and refused to treat security forces who were combating protests in those cities, a report from several sources claimed. Five hospitals and seven emergency clinics in those cities are now reportedly being run by the government directly, and at least 75 medical personnel were detained, the reports claimed.
Xiomeran economy "on life support": The Xiomeran economy, despite the insistent proclamations of the government of Emperor Xochiuhue, is "on a rapid downward spiral" as a result of the trade war brewing between Xiomera and the nations opposed to the junta, inside reports claim.
"The Xiomeran economy is highly dependent on international trade. Due to the current situation, trade with our largest trading partners, Legionas and Eiria, has been reduced to almost nothing. Trade between Xiomera and the greater IDU is also facing a steep dropoff, as many nations are tightening the screws on the junta regime," Tlaxochuepo, a professor from Tlālacuetztla Polytechnic University who is currently in exile in Laeral, told VOP. "While the regime is trying to hide the numbers as best they can, and trying to present an image of strength and self-reliance, the numbers simply don't lie. Trade between Xiomera and its East Caxcana neighbors has been cut by 90% since Eiria and Xiomera slapped dueling sanctions on each other. Trade between Xiomera and the rest of the IDU is down by at least 50%. This is a monumental disaster for the Xiomeran economy, no matter how the junta tries to fudge the numbers."
Tlaxochuepo stated that if things continue to trend in this direction for the Xiomeran economy, it will lead to "massive layoffs and economic disruption" within Xiomera itself. "The Xiomeran economy is built on two planks: mass production and export to other nations putting money in Xiomerans' pockets, which in turns allows them to spend money at home and fuel the consumer-driven domestic economy. What is happening right now is cutting both of those planks in half, and Xiomerans will be the ones to fall through when the planks break. Massive unemployment in Xiomera itself, coupled with a citizenry that just isn't used to any kind of economic struggle, is going to be a powder keg for the regime unless they can find some way to fend this off and get the economy going again."
