With the International Democratic Union's Football Championship well underway, L-Sport.com sat down with the affable Legionite Manager following the first matchweek
L-Sport.com: This is Legionas' first time hosting such a prestigious tournament, how do you think the nation as a whole is coping with the tournament.
William Stevenson: I believe the public is really enjoying the tournament and, as it is our first time hosting, the bragging rights will definitely be a bonus.
L-Sport.com: The Winter Tigers over the years have been known to be a feared side, but during the last tournament the national team crashed out at the group stage. Do you believe that the side can redeem itself this time round?
William Stevenson: Well, what type of manager would I be if I didn't believe in my team (laughs). Although we did disappoint last time round, my predecessor laid a strong foundation for the side, and with our squad and mentality, we have the chance to go all the way and win the championship.
L-Sport.com: Which teams look to be the ones to watch?
William Stevenson: Well, the New Lusitanians are always a team to watch, having far more experience as a cohesive unit with star players all across the team. The Xiomerans as well look to be an intimidating team, as they have shown with their first match against the Laeralites, being only unable to grab that decisive goal. These two teams I believe to be the ones to watch, although I will also be keeping an eye on the others.
L-Sport.com: What is your reaction following your team's draw to the Eirians during the first match-week?
William Stevenson: I'm proud of the boys, really. They fought hard, had the right mentality and aggression seen in dominant sides. What I could see from the match was that the two sides were very evenly matched, the concept of one winning the match would've been unfair. And that beauty from Kowalski is a definite contender for the Goal of the Tournament.
L-Sport.com: What aspect of your team's mentality do you think need to be worked on the most?
William Stevenson: It may be too early to say, but I was worried about the attacking mentality of the team. The chances were few and far between in the first half of the match, forcing me to reinforce the attack with Richard (Carter-Briggs) and Michael (Williamson). The change was definitely evident in the second half, so I think it may have been a single occurrence. Again, it's too early too say, so maybe later in the tournament I will have a more concrete answer
L-Sport.com: Which player do you think might make the difference in your team during the tournament?
William Stevenson: I was really impressed by Marcus (Zervas) during many training sessions, the friendlies ans well as the first match. He's really gelled into the team, under the tutelage of (Harry) Charles, with many of his tendencies being smoothed over and polished over the past few months. He's really shown he has the mental grit needed in this tier of international football, even at the young age of 20. He's definitely a player to watch and, in my opinion, a player that can make a huge difference for us.
L-Sport.com: Well, thank you for taking your time for attending this short interview, we will be rooting for you in the studio, as always.
William Stevenson: Definitely, thank you for hosting this interview. I'm sure we'll make you proud (shakes hand). Thank you once again, see you all soon!
