President denounces new Xiomeran regime

"Veiled threat" on Xiomeran media scorned, government in exile backed

In a blistering address to the nation today, President Matōchmizalo denounced the installation of a new Emperor in Xiomera, and reaffirmed that his administration will continue to support the Xiomeran government in exile currently based in Laeral.

"Like many Xiomerans, as was amply demonstrated by the shouts of angry citizens at his own so-called coronation, we refuse to recognize the usurper Xochiuhue as the legitimate Emperor of Xiomera. We further denounce those who have co-opted and subverted the religious, political, social and moral elements of Huenyan society to force this unwanted usurper onto the Obsidian Throne," the President declared to a mix of Milintican and foreign media at an unscheduled press conference at Haven House.

A clearly angry President also poured scorn on a "veiled threat" delivered against the Democratic Republic in Xiomeran media yesterday. The military junta that deposed Empress Yauhmi had not commented at all on the Milintican rejection of their coup, and the new false Emperor had likewise declined to discuss Milintica at all. However, during a recent newscast on Xiomera's XIN network discussing foreign reactions to the installation of a new Emperor, a map of Catica displayed on the newscast labeled Milintica as "Far Western Xiomera", rather than its legitimate title as a sovereign nation. The deliberate erasure of the Democratic Republic from the map, and its relabeling as part of Xiomera, have been interpreted by Milinticans as a threat to the Democratic Republic due to its outspoken opposition to the coup in Xiomera.

"If these type of veiled threats are meant to warn us to be silent, or to change our stance, they have failed, and will fail. The idiotic braying donkeys in Tlālacuetztla who have promulgated this illegal and immoral coup are having enough trouble even keeping their own country under their thumb. They would be well-advised not to cast their greedy criminal eyes onto the Democratic Republic. Their avarice, in this case, far exceeds their actual capabilities," the President warned. "We will not bow to any foreign hand, especially that of the thieves who have sought to steal an entire country from its rightful people."

As a blunt counter to the map displayed on the XIN newscast, the President had a map of the Xiomeran Empire propped up next to him as he spoke. The map labeled the areas currently out of Xiomeran government control, such as the Necatli lands, Manauia Island and the city of Chuaztlapoc as "Free Huenya". The rest of the country was labeled "The Xiomeran Empire, For Now (until Xochiuhue is overthrown)".

In response to the threat to Milintican sovereignty, Milinticans of all backgrounds have begun holding rallies throughout the country declaring their willingness to fight "any invader, any time, anywhere" to protect the independence of the Democratic Republic. Armed citizens' groups, as well as the Milintican defense forces, have been ordered to stand ready to mobilize at 24 hours' notice in the event of an invasion.

Envoy sent to Laeralsford

As a further rejection of Xiomeran nationalist imperialism, the Milintican government has sent an envoy to Laeralsford to meet with Xiomeran Crown Prince Texōccoatl. Rua Karauria, the former Milintican president, is reportedly leaving retirement to take up the role of the Milintican liaison with the Xiomeran government in exile.

"We will provide all possible support to the government in exile to help free the people of Huenya and put an end to the tyranny of this usurpation," Karauria said to the media as she left for Laeralsford today. "We will offer our country as a safe haven to anyone seeking escape from the reach of Xochiuhue, and for anyone seeking to restore the legitimate government of Xiomera to power." The former president also had a message for Xochiuhue and the junta supporting him. "You may think we are a weak and poor country. And, perhaps we are. But even the humble ant can sting the absolute hell out of you if you threaten it. You have threatened the Milintican people and their independence. We will not stand for it. The ants are coming for you. We shall see if you can bear the sting."

Smoking banned in public throughout Milintica

With all the furor over the Xiomeran threat, one could be forgiven for overlooking the rest of the political events in the country. However, a major milestone was celebrated today by health advocates; a nationwide ban on smoking, vaping and use of other tobacco products in all public places has passed the Representative Assembly. The new law passed by a margin of 110-18-2, and was signed by the President today. "This is a huge step forward in guaranteeing the health of the Milintican people, lowering the burden on our national health service, and improving our environment," Health Minister Ramarie Nepe told the media after the law passed the Assembly.

Health advocates have long sought the passage of a nationwide tobacco products ban, and celebrated the new law. Some, however, are critical of the law, pointing out that the loss of tobacco product-related sales could potentially harm small businesses as well as firms that used to manufacture and import cigarettes and other tobacco products. "Our economy is already badly struggling as it is, and now the idealists in the Assembly have just put another nail in its coffin," Yarechel, a MIP representative from Amoxpin who was the most vocal opponent of the tobacco ban, said after the bill passed.
