Milintica to consider diplomatic relations with Xiomera

Aid offered by Xiomerans causes change in position

Prime Minister Tupai Tapihana announced that he has reached agreement with President Matōchmizalo on accepting an offer from the Xiomeran Empire to send a diplomatic team to discuss establishing diplomatic relations. If diplomatic relations are established, it would be a complete transformation of the relationship between the two countries.

The Prime Minister confirmed rumors that aid sent from Xiomera helped Milintica bring its recent outbreak of the AD14 Adenovirus under control, "saving thousands of lives". The aid was reportedly sent secretly by Empress Yauhmi and the Xiomeran government, out of fears that an open offer of aid would be rejected by Milintican hardliners opposed to any form of rapprochement between the two countries.

"The aid generously provided by Empress Yauhmi prevented a total collapse of our country. When you take that assistance, coupled with the sweeping reforms being implemented by the Empress, it is clear that Xiomera is changing, and our view of Xiomera should also change," the Prime Minister said. A diplomatic team from Xiomera is expected to arrive in Milintica within the next few days. The Prime Minister described the move as "a way for Milintica to resolve its crippling isolation, and be able to join the wider international community."

"We will not gain anything by continuing this quixotic stance against the Xiomerans. If they had wanted to occupy us, they've had centuries to do it. Now is the time for us to abandon age-old fears, paranoia and hatred, and try to make things work," the Prime Minister said.

The change in position has not been commented on by President Matōchmizalo or his office. While the Prime Minister's office is responsible for international relations, "the President would have had to sign off on this for Prime Minister Tupihana to have enough support to implement such a huge change in direction," an anonymous source in Haven House said.

Milintica's government has described the Xiomeran Empire as the greatest threat to Milintica's independence and security for centuries. The nation's Constitution even includes such language in its preamble. While there is no formal law preventing diplomatic relations between the two countries, it has long been understood as a practical unwritten law. The major political parties in Milintica, such as the MPP, PPM and GPM, have thrown their cautious support behind the proposal. However, more radical parties, such as the PAP, MFR and MIP have already rejected any possibility of diplomatic relations with Xiomera. A session of the Representative Assembly had to be halted after the representatives of the minor parties took over the dais as a protest against the Xiomerans and refused to allow anyone to speak. Leaders of the MIP and MFR have also warned that they will protest the arrival of the Xiomeran delegation, and called for a general strike and for protests to block the streets on the day of the Xiomeran delegation's arrival.
