153 new AD14 cases reported in Milintica

Experts warn situation spiraling, claim government coverup

153 new cases of the AD14 Adenovirus have emerged in cities around Milintica, with the first deaths from the illness being reported by authorities.

The latest reports of AD14 began in the capital, Huānoch, but have now spread to the cities of Cēnoli, Mi'hua, Pilxo, Tahana and Ie Keeti as well. Medical personnel are reporting that hospitals in cities outside of the capital are beginning to become overwhelmed by the rapidly increasing number of cases. Three deaths have also now been reported by authorities. One of the deceased, an Independence Airport restaurant worker, was one of the first to be quarantined for the virus. The other two are residents of Cēnoli and Ie Keeti, whose connection to the original set of quarantined individuals is not clear. Authorities also have not yet been able to locate the foreign visitor (or visitors) who may have first introduced the virus to Milintica.

In response to the sudden spike in cases, Health Minister Ramarie Nepe has ordered that all districts in Capital Region and Northwest Region are to be restricted - no one will be allowed to enter or leave until further notice. Public gatherings or assemblies are also suspended indefinitely.

While the newly announced expansion of restrictions has been welcomed, opposition officials have still blasted the government for its slow response to the crisis. “A quarantine should have been set up much sooner, travel restrictions should have been enforced much sooner. This is beginning to get out of control because of the government’s lack of preparedness and slowness to acknowledge a problem,” Waiano Rara, a MPP legislator from Ie Keeti district, told the Voice of the People. Rara is the leader of a growing chorus of politicians within President Matōchmizalo‘s own MPP party demanding that the President either address the AD14 outbreak more decisively and effectively, or step down.

Health experts are also warning that the health services are not up to the AD14 challenge, and criticizing the Health Minister and the President for their “inexplicable” decision to not close the borders, or set up testing at ports of entry, to insulate Milintica from AD14. “This government, in the interest of making a political point about how ‘welcoming’ Milintica is to the world, completely ignored its own advisors and the medical community, and ignored basic practice and common sense about how to address an outbreak,” Dr. Makareta Teira, an infectious disease specialist with the National University Hospital System, said. “We may end up paying the price for this negligence.”

The President and Health Minister Nepe have not made any public comment about the latest surge in AD14 cases, but a statement from the government said that the government is actively seeking solutions to address the problem.
