Kerlian Censorship Board to permit greater number of foreign films to be shown in Kerlian cinemas
16th February 2020

The Kerlian Censorship Board, overseen by Councillor Hart, has announced that more foreign films “than ever before” would be allowed to be screened in cinemas in Kerlile. This change in policy has been expected for several months, after the Council hinted at relaxations in censorship law. It has been welcomed by a number of campaign groups, and those in the Kerlian film industry.

Before this decision, all foreign films were automatically banned by the KCB, and were only screened for possible legalisation on a case-by-case basis. Employees of the KCB with an Outside Media Consumption Permit (OMCP) would screen foreign films which received reviews in their countries of origin which indicated that the film may be suitable for a Kerlian audience. If the film passed screening, then the production company would be contacted by Kerlian cinema companies.

Under the new system, the OMCP has been scrapped entirely. Previously, applicants for a permit were required to undergo a standard loyalty test, which would be repeated every year to renew the permit. Now, employees of the KCB will be allowed to view uncensored media on a trust basis, without having to pass any further tests besides those given to all applicants for jobs. It is also believed that the Council plan to scrap all civilian loyalty tests within the next month.

The KCB have announced they are hiring an additional 200 permanent employees in order to review a greater quantity of films on a more regular basis. They will also be hiring an undisclosed number of temporary employees in order to screen older films. In a surprising turn of events, in order to increase diversity of the workplace, 10% of these jobs will be reserved for male applicants. The KCB will also be reviewing existing reports on films that were deemed inappropriate with new, loosened criteria.

Foreign film production companies have also been invited to contact the KCB in order to negotiate potential arrangements to have their films automatically approved in exchange for assurances that they contain no anti-Kerlian content. Companies interested in discussing possible arrangements will be invited to send representatives to Kerlile within the next few months. It is unknown how many, if any, companies will take up the offer.
