President blasts Xiomeran travel restrictions
In his daily speech to the nation today, President Matōchmizalo harshly criticized the Xiomeran government for announcing travel restrictions aimed at people potentially carrying the AD14 Adenovirus strain which has recently emerged.
"I suppose that we shouldn't be surprised that an evil empire that was founded on the bones of those suffering and dying from a horrendous plague would turn its backs on those who are sick now, and slam its doors shut to those in need. But we are surprised nonetheless. In six centuries, the Xiomeran Empire has not evolved at all. It is still a compassionless, cruel land," the President said. "Perhaps now people will see that the recent charm offensive by Empress Yauhmi and the Xiomeran regime for the smoke and mirrors that it is. When people needed their help, this supposedly benevolent Empress turned her backs on them."
President Matōchmizalo confirmed that Milintica will not change its immigration or entry procedures, and will continue to allow people to enter the country freely. "If people turn up here who are sick, we will help them. That is the Milintican way," the President declared.
The announcement that the borders will remain open was met with mostly praise from other Milinticans. Some, however, have questioned how the Democratic Republic, which is struggling with poverty and a highly burdened public health system, can absorb the risk posed by the AD14 Adenovirus. "President Matōchmizalo has no right to expose thousands of our people to this danger," Ikei Enoka, premier of the Paora Alliance Party, declared in a speech urging the government to bar entry to those carrying the virus. Members of the Milintica Isolationist Party have reportedly threatened to form their own "immigration security" teams to bar anyone potentially sick from entering the country, in what some have seen as a direct challenge to the President and the security forces.
Government issues bid for investment
Prime Minister Tupai Tapihana announced that the government is issuing a formal invitation to the nations of the world to invest in Milintica. "We are a growing nation, with a well-educated and industrious workforce, abundant natural resources, and a great deal of potential," the Prime Minister said. "While we have been relatively isolated from the world until recently, we hope that other nations will see us as a valuable potential partner."
Prime Minister Tapihana said that the government is willing to consider incentives and tax breaks in return for foreign investment.
