New Zamastanian submarine test-fires ballistic missile for first time
Zamastan's most advanced new nuclear-powered submarine has successfully test-launched a Talonix intercontinental ballistic missile, according to its defense department.
Thursday's launch from the Horseshoe Bay's northwestern coast came amid arms control tensions between Tofino and Gladysynthia following the latter's counter-terrorism operations on the border, as well as a long history of violence that has sparked fears of a burgeoning arms race and possible conflict.
The Kelowna Star fired the missile from underwater that landed on target on the uninhabited Graysel Island in Zamastanian controlled waters, the department said.
"For the first time ever, a seaborne Talonix ballistic missile was test-fired from the latest Project Talon IX-A strategic missile-carrying submarine Kelowna Star," the department said, adding the "missile's flight went according to plan".
"Its dummy warheads reached the range within the established time, which was registered by data recording equipment," it said.
Launched in 2017, the Kelowna Star submarine is the first upgraded model of Zamastan's Talonix class of ballistic missile submarines, designed to be more maneuverable and quieter than previous models.
It will enter service with Zamastan's 2nd Fleet at the end of this year once it has completed trials including weapons tests, the fleet's commander, Admiral Percy Tavoka, said according to The Tofino Times news agency.
Other Talonix class submarines already in service include the Porpoise Sword and the Mylinia. They can carry up to 16 Talonix missiles, which are designed for use on these submarines.
