SHOTS EXCHANGED BETWEEN ZAMASTANIAN AND GLADYSYNTHIAN TROOPS ON BORDER IN APPARENT MISTAKE
A contingent of Zamatsan Special Forces was caught up in Gladysynthian shelling against apparent Gladysynthian separatist positions in southern Gladysynthia, days after President Anya Bishop and Secretary of Defense Curtis Fondaden told their Gladysynthian counterparts that they would withdraw Zamastanian troops from certain positions in the area around known G.P.F.F. (Gladysynthian Popular Freedom Fighter) locations. A senior military official said shooting by the Gladysynthian forces was so heavy that the Zamastanian personnel began firing back in self-defense and considered at one point calling up a tank division.
Instead of continuing to return fire, the Special Forces withdrew once the Gladysynthian fire had ceased. Tofino Times previously reported Wednesday that the current rules of engagement for Zamastanian forces continue to be centered around self-defense and that no order has been issued by the Zian Presidential Mansion for a complete withdrawal from the specific border section in question.
The Gladysynthian Defense Ministry issued a statement in response to the Tofino Times report, denying that its military had targeted Zamastanian forces. The ministry affirmed that "Gladysynthian border outposts south of Danaska came under rocket and mortar fire from the hills located approximately 1,000 meters southwest of a Zamastanian observation post."
"In self-defense, reciprocal fire was opened on the terrorist positions of the attack. Gladysynthia did not open fire at the Zamastanian observation post in any way," the statement added. "All precautions were taken prior to opening fire in order to prevent any harm to the base. As a precaution, we ceased fire upon receiving information from Zamastanian command. We firmly reject the claim that Zamastanian forces were fired upon."
No fatalities on either side were reported, though a Zamastanian soldier and two Gladysynthian soldiers were reported wounded in the gunfire exchange.
