VOL. XXXII .. Num. 5800 | In the News: Zamastan-Gladysynthia Tensions Flare
MILITARY VEHICLE HITS MINE IN GLADYSYNTHIA-ZAMASTAN BORDER, FOUR SOLDIERS KILLED
Premiere of Gladysynthia, Seswitch LaFlaunce, sent condolences and apologies to the Zamastanian military and the familes of those affected, saying "the scars of our old wounds persist to this day, and for that, we must work together to overcome."
The border of Zamastan and Gladysynthia is one of the most heavily militarized areas in the IDU, similar to areas such as the Kerlian-Lauchenoirian border which have seen dramatic escalations and spurts of violence throughout recent history.
Gladysynthia and Zamastan have been historic rivals, and as the one year anniversary of the October-November 2018 Gladysynthia Crisis nears, tensions remain high. Over 1,300 people, including over 200 civilians, were killed in the three weeks of fighting, mostly centered in the region and city of Danaska. The conflict ended with the signing of the Treaty of Mönusÿnthys (2018-9B), which lifted sanctions and made each nation pledge to remove military installations in key highlighted areas of the bordering territory after over 60 years of tensions brought about by the 1945 Danaska Conflict and The Tariel War.
The Treaty was signed on 13 November 2018 after two weeks of fighting in the Danaska Region of Gladysynthia. Mediated by Farhen Brooks, the President of Vulkaria, as well as delegates from Cadair such as Mab Darogan Waywffon Morgan, the treaty came into effect immediately after it was signed by Zamastan and Gladysynthia. Former-President Zacharias Castovia and Premiere LaFlaunce were praised for their quick resolve.
The treaty brought about a larger increase of hopeful intention towards a peacetime alliance between the two nations, though with the Civil conflict in Vulkaria and the political disagreements between Premiere Seswitch LaFlaunce and President Anya Bishop, the fulfillment of much of the treaty have been lackluster. In addition, since the signing and including today's incident, nine Zamastanian soliders have been killed at the border. All deaths have been deemed accidental, though all were caused by undiscovered Gladysynthian mines. The border area is thought to be the most heavily mined area in the IDU.
