VOL. XXXII .. Num. 5780 | In the News: EMPEROR OF XIOMERA DEAD AT 70
EMPEROR TOPILPOPOCA DEAD, AGED 70, WEEKS FOLLOWING ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT
A week long session of mourning has been announced in Xiomera following the revelation from State Media outlet Xiomeran Imperial News that Emperor Topilpopoca, one of the most consequential leaders of the past decade on the world stage, has passed away. He was 70 years old.
Several weeks following his severe injuries at the hands of an assassin on September 9th, the Emperor succumbed to his injuries and passed away in the early morning of Thursday, October 3rd, 2019. He had been staged in a coma for the past month.
Chief Justice Nopalliztli stated in a public announcement that "His loss is a tragedy for us all, but his legacy of strong and effective leadership for almost two decades has left Xiomera far better than it was when he became Emperor. He will be greatly missed, but we owe it to him and to his legacy to be strong and keep building our nation".
President Anya Bishop sent regards to the government of Xiomera, stating that she was "thinking of Topilpopoca's friends and family and for the devoted people of Xiomera. We didn't tend to get along, as Zamastanians and the rest of the world witnessed in recent months. Regardless of our differences, he showed our nation hospitality and graciousness following our own tragedy with the earthquake of August 31st. The Emperor, I truly believe now, was a dedicated and passionate man."
The President's statements gained criticism, considering her comments in the past calling Topilpopoca a "puppet" of Kerlile and the intense trade war between the two nations. Opponents in the 2020 Presidential race, specifically Senator Euan Gunn, were quick to jump on Bishop. "Topilpopoca was a tyrant," Gunn stated, "who subjected dissidents to torture and execution. There's a reason so many refugees come to Zamastan from Xiomera, and the President is at fault for raising up a dead, dangerous man."
