President Anya Bishop Announces Relationship and Pregnancy in Press Conference
President Anya Bishop will step down as President for six weeks when she has her first baby in March, but says she will still be "fully contactable and available".
President Bishop confirmed the news this morning.
She said her partner Marcus Fraiser, whom she has been dating for three years, would be a "stay at home" dad.
"I think it's fair to say that this will be a child that a village will raise, but we couldn't be more excited. I know there will be lots of questions, and we'll answer all of them (I can assure you we have a plan all ready to go!)" In a statement, President Bishop confirmed that an election will be held within her staffing quarters, and whoever is chosen will take on the role of Acting President for six weeks after the baby is born.
"Mr Fraiser and I have a great relationship, and I know that together we'll make this period work. I will make arrangements for appropriate Secretaries or others to act in my other portfolios over the six weeks I am away from office.
"At the end of my leave I will resume all Presidential duties."
Bishop said she intended to be fully contactable and available throughout the six-week period. She said she was hoping to remain based in Tofino, close to family and friends in the proximity of the Zian Presidential Mansion. However, she said she would see how things went and plans could change. The President has a residence in the Kingston neighborhood, as well as another home in Tirzah. The President also joked that she wasn't sure how the secret service security car drivers would deal with a baby seat.
President Bishop said they first knew of the pregnancy in mid-July, "but as many couples do in the early stages, we kept it to ourselves". She said the news was a "fantastic surprise".
When the baby is born, Bishop will be the third President to have a child in office (Cassious Castovia and Quinn Werner), though she will be the first to give birth herself.
Politicians from across the political spectrum sent Bishop their congratulations. Rival presidential candidate Foley Sakzi said in a social media post that he and his family were "excited to hear of the exciting development," and that they were wishing "President Bishop and Mr. Fraiser all the best." Cain Blackwater also posted saying "Thrilled to hear about @PresBishop 's pregnancy. She'll make a great mom. Congrats, Anya"
