Emperor: "We will not bow to foreign aggression"
In a terse response from the Palace of Flowers to increased Zamastanian trade sanctions, the Emperor today ordered a reciprocal freeze on any assets of the Zamastanian government in Xiomera, as well as any associated entities. The Xiomeran government will also immediately implement reciprocal tariffs to match any and all Zamastanian tariffs against Xiomera, as well as immediate reciprocal embargoes for any implemented by Zamastan.
"We were prepared to give the Zamastanian government time to come to its senses and choose to de-escalate their aggressive and unprovoked attacks upon the Xiomeran economy. However, the dramatic escalation in Zamastanian trade aggression, combined with their recent decision to sanction our friends in Kerlile as well, have left us no choice but to implement these reciprocal actions," the Emperor said. Topilpopoca added that this was "a dark day for reasonable and amicable conduct between nations" but that Xiomera would not back down. "We said we would not bow to foreign aggression, from Zamastan or anyone else. We meant what we said," the Emperor added.
In an attempt to give Zamastan a chance to reconsider its actions, the Xiomeran government had given their neighbor ten days as a cooling-off period to reverse course, or at least open discussions, before the implementation of reciprocal sanctions by the Empire. But with the recent escalations, the Emperor said, Xiomera "must act in the defense of itself, and its friends in the region" by terminating that cooling-off period and implementing sanctions immediately. Even now, however, the Emperor said, Xiomera is still prepared to act in a responsible manner, and will drop all sanctions or restrictions on Zamastanian trade if that nation does the same for Xiomeran trade, as well as its penalties aimed at Kerlile.
When asked by a reporter if he intended to respond to the Zamastanian President, Anya Bishop, calling him a puppet, the Emperor had this to say: "Such childish insults are beneath the dignity of heads of state. I will not trade schoolyard jibes with a mere civil servant who is pushing this aggression to look tough because she knows she is losing in her re-election bid and is willing to put her political career over the lives and well-being of both her people and ours. I have said what I need to say. I need not say any more. I have spoken, and so has the Huenyan Empire of Xiomera. It is up to the Zamastanians now what direction this matter takes."
Xiomera, Kerlile set to form closer ties
The Secretariat of Trade confirmed today that the Empire is finalizing a trade deal with the Matriarchy of Kerlile. The landmark trade deal will allow Xiomera access to Kerlian raw materials, in exchange for exports of trade goods and petroleum products.
"This deal is a wonderful example of what can happen when nations approach each other in the right way," the Secretariat of Trade said in a statement quoting Emperor Topilpopoca in announcing the trade deal. "President Arnott and the Kerlian government have been extremely fair and positive to deal with, and we are overjoyed to enter this partnership with them. Together, Kerlile and Xiomera will make each other stronger through cooperation and mutually respectful exchange," he added in his statement.
In a matter related to the trade deal, the Secretariat of Trade also announced that Kerlile will be granted Preferred Trading Partner (PTP) status by the Xiomeran government. PTP status grants the nation in question the best possible trade terms with the Empire: zero tariffs, no import quotas, and no trade barriers of any kind. Kerlile is the first nation to be granted this preferred status by the Xiomeran government.
The government of Xiomera also formally denounced the recent violation of the sovereignty of Kerlile by the government of Trive. "The Trivian actions are just another example of nations cavalierly disregarding the sovereignty of their neighbors. These attempts to harm and disrupt other countries must cease," Secretary of International Affairs Huitzilhuani said. The Secretary confirmed that the Empire will mirror current Kerlian sanctions on Trive until such time as Trive's government agrees to cease efforts to disrupt Kerlian society.
In a related announcement, Secretary of Defense Xochiqui confirmed that the Empire will begin supplying Kerlile with defensive assistance as part of the trade deal between the two nations. Xiomeran missile systems, along with other armaments, will be supplied to Kerlile, along with Xiomeran advisors for training the Kerlian military on the proper usage of Xiomeran defensive technology. Xiomera will also assist Kerlile with implementation of a Kerlian version of Happy Society, the comprehensive Xiomeran government program for monitoring and controlling television, radio, SMS/text, instant messaging, web, and Internet communications and contacts. Xiomera's Information Security Technology Corporation (ISTC), which set up Happy Society in Xiomera, will be contracted by the Xiomeran government to help Kerlile set up its domestic version of the program.
Xiomera offers trade incentives to other IDU nations
In response to the aggressive and unprovoked economic attacks by the nation of Zamastan, the Secretariat of Trade announced today that the Xiomeran goverment is prepared to negotiate trade deals with other IDU nations "who are capable of civilized trade conduct," Secretary of Trade Tlanextia said.
"We are prepared to offer generous trade incentives, up to and including PTP status, to other IDU nations that are willing to trade with Xiomera on a mutually respectful and just basis. Xiomera trades with the world, and we are a fair trading partner to those who are fair to us. Xiomera has much to offer other nations, and we hope that our other neighbors will consider the benefits of reasonable diplomatic and trade exchange," Tlanextia said.
Xiomeran trade officials are openly admitting that the current goal of the Secretariat of Trade is to replace Zamastanian trade entirely with trade from other nations unless Zamastanian sanctions are lifted, as Zamastan "has clearly proven to be an irresponsible trading partner".
In a related note, Xiomeran diplomats are also reportedly quietly approaching their counterparts in other IDU nations, urging them to push Zamastan to end its sanctions regime, or at least enter discussions with Xiomeran officials, before regional economies are seriously impacted by the growing dispute. However, Xiomera reportedly is not prepared to make any concessions which will require changes to the Xiomeran political system or Xiomeran laws. "In essence, we are prepared to return to the status quo before all this unpleasantness and throwing around of sanctions began. But that is as far as we are prepared to go," a Trade Secretariat spokesperson said.
