XIN vs. HNN: Dueling Xiomeran Media
#18

(While not as graphically slick - or as easy to find or see - as the ubiquitous XIN, the new Huenyan News Network is still broadcasting from Zamastan, Laeral and Lauchenoiria, and clearly trying to make up for lost time. A new intro scene, featuring its own dramatic music, shows a previously-unseen flag. Bright blue, with four lines crossed to form a diamond with a jaguar in the middle of a white center, waves as the tagline reads: HNN News.)

"Good morning, to the free nations of the IDU, and to the corners of Huenya where the Xiomeran government's invasive censorship hasn't blocked us! I am Itonan, and this is the new HNN News. Despite the machinations of the rats skulking around the corridors of the Palace of Flowers, we are still here, and we are still broadcasting the truth to all those who can see it - and all those willing to see it.

Before we begin, you may have noticed we are no longer using the Xiomeran imperial flag in our graphics. Not being Xiomeran citizens anymore, by our choosing, it also made sense for us to abandon the flag of our oppressors. The flag we now use is the flag of One Huenya, the movement that will, in time, overthrow the Empire and replace it with a truly free nation. Let this azure flag of freedom fly in the faces of the Imperial oppressors, and the sheep who follow them.

We want to begin this broadcast by once again thanking the nations of Laeral, Lauchenoiria and especially Zamastan for allowing us to continue to operate despite the intense pressure of the unjust and illegitimate Xiomeran government. It's good to see nations standing up for freedom and justice - even at a price, as the brewing trade dispute between Zamastan and the Tlālacuetztla Tyrants demonstrates. We are proud to stand with Zamastan as it tries to do the right thing for the people of Huenya - even when our own supposed government won't.

We would also urge our fellow Huenyans not to buy the lies and the machinations of the government. They are trying to portray this as a battle to protect the sovereignty and the independence of Xiomeran people - this is a rank fiction. It is all about preserving an unjust system that denies the heritage and history of the other three tribes of Huenya, demands lockstep obedience, works its people to the bone under the guise of 'meritocracy', and lets them die in the streets if they 'fail'. It is also, just like everything else back home, carefully orchestrated. HNN has obtained video from the scene of several of the so-called 'spontaneous patriotic protests' showing that thugs in the Patriotic Youth Corps, Xiomeran Students' Association, Xiomeran Servicepersons and Protectors Association, and the Good Citizens League were the ones leading the attacks on Zamastanian businesses and the theatrically produced 'patriotic outrage' at the recent sanctions. Unfortunately, this typical government manipulation of public opinion has paid off, as many people have bought into it and are joining these government orchestrated riots. This has turned the government's production of 'We Love Xiomera Outrage Theater' into an all too real, and ugly, moment in our history.

We know the obvious reason for this. The government needs to turn the attention of its citizens away from the ugliness of repression, and the ugliness of everyday life in the Xiomeran Empire. Finding a foreign boogeyman is perfectly suited for this, and it works all too well, as recent events demonstrate. But let's look at the bigger picture. On the face of it, the government's iron-fisted grip on power is as secure as ever. Why, then, the need for all this?

In two years, the Emperor Topilpopoca, along with the rest of the leaders of Xiomera, will face the Great Selection. The choosing of who our leaders are, every six years, by elitist councils of so-called 'experts' who the government claims are just as fair and democratic as real elections. (We know that's llama crap, but let's look past that for now.) Emperor Topilpopoca has ruled since 2001, and isn't getting any younger. Every Selection, the Emperor comes closer to the inevitable period when he will be seen as too old, too feeble, or too weak to keep his seat on the Obsidian Throne. There are plenty of people who want his job. The former Justice Secretary, Cētlalhui, was rumored to be gunning for the throne before Topilpopoca tossed him out on his ass - excuse me, before Cētlalhui 'retired'. The current Justice Secretary, Cuicanan, is also believed to be a strong contender for the throne, as is the current Secretary of International Affairs, Huitzilhuani. And of course, as they do every six years, the other tlatoani are likely to challenge Topilpopoca for his hot seat on the throne. Noxochicotzin, the new Necatli tlatoani who Topilpopoca engineered to replace Chicaliztli, is now believed to be likely to try to take the throne from Topilpopoca as well, in a delicious irony to befall the scheming old lizard of an Emperor.

So, all of this violence and outrage boils down to the mission of protecting the political career and neck of one old man who is too stubborn to relinquish the grip on power he's held for decades, too scared to let his country change, and too greedy to walk away from the cushy life in the Palace of Flowers. We at HNN say we should solve Topilpopoca's problem for him early - and drag his ancient ass out of the Palace of Flowers by his hair. Huenyans, rise up and make it so! We can end this tyranny at any time. We just have to have the courage to do it, and bring a better future to our centuries-oppressed homeland. There is no other time. That time is now."
