BREAKING NEWS: Protests against sanctions roil Xiomeran cities

Protests against the Zamastanian government and business interests have broken out in several cities across Xiomera, in the wake of Zamastanian President Anya Bishop slapping the Empire with a series of unprovoked trade sanctions.

The sanctions placed tariffs on luxury goods and vehicles, and also suspended export of beverages and non-perishable food products. While the sanctions are expected to have a negligible effect on the self-sufficient Xiomeran economy, they have stoked anger at what Xiomeran citizens view as an attempt by a foreign state to impose its will on the Empire.

Municipal and tribal police, backed by Imperial Police, have had to respond in force to a series of incidents over the past three days:

- In Tlālacuetztla, angry citizens have attacked several Zamastanian-owned businesses, shattering windows and forcing their closure. Tlālacuetztla Municipal Police have had to place a cordon around many of these businesses to prevent further violence and to protect the shopkeepers.

- Also in Tlālacuetztla, a group of Xiomeran military veterans held a protest in which President Bishop was burned in effigy. Zamastanian products and goods were also burned, and citizens were urged to boycott all Zamastanian products "in the defense of the Xiomeran nation."

- In Huitzitaca and Acalan, dockworkers have gone on strike and refused to unload cargo ships carrying Zamastanian goods. Truck drivers in multiple cities are also refusing to transport Zamastanian goods; truckers in Ahuilizhual even went so far as to dump truckloads of Zamastanian produce onto the roadside, leaving it to rot.

- In Mizcayotl and Ixxiuitl, protests similar to the ones in Tlālacuetztla broke out shortly after the ones in the capital. Municipal and tribal police had to declare a curfew in the downtown areas of both cities to make the protests subside.

- In Nezahualpilli, clashes broke out after anti-Xiomeran elements supporting the sanctions and protesting the shutdown of the pirate network XUN tried to hold an unauthorized gathering in the center of the city. Groups of angry Xiomeran students, Patriotic Youth Corps members, military veterans and other citizens responded by attacking the anti-Xiomeran protest, and the resulting anti-social violence only came to an end when Imperial Police backed by a contingent of the Nezahualpilli garrison of the Xiomeran Civil Guard imposed a mandatory and immediate 24-hour curfew on the city. 45 anti-Xiomeran protesters were arrested.

While protests have been ended for the moment by decisive and effective action by the peoples' shield that is Xiomeran law enforcement, public anger is clearly seething at what many view as an unwarranted attack on Xiomera.

Cuicanan, Tepilcayotl rally boycott supporters in Tlālacuetztla

Secretary of Justice Cuicanan and Secretary of Security Tepilcayotl led a rally in the Xiomeran capital, denouncing the Zamastanian sanctions and repeating Cuicanan's earlier call for a boycott of Zamastanian trade.

"The laws, values and beliefs of Xiomerans are decided in Tlālacuetztla, not in Tofino. Anya Bishop and the government of Zamastan have no right to harbor criminals seeking to harm our nation, and they certainly have no right to tell us what laws we should have or enforce in our own country," Secretary Cuicanan declared to a large crowd. "People like the Zamastanians preach tolerance and understanding, yet in the same breath tell other lands what is right and wrong. And if you don't comply with their idea of how you should run your own country, they try to destroy your economy. It is imperialism and we will not stand for it," he added.

Secretary Tepilcayotl echoed the statements of his colleague, telling the crowd "The Huenyan Empire of Xiomera is a sovereign nation, and we have been so for over six centuries, back when Zamastan was just someone else's colony. Who are they to dictate to us? No one. We will enforce our laws, we will protect our social harmony and our unique culture, we will defend our sovereignty, and we will not answer to foreign dictates," Tepilcayotl said. "If they think they will break us, we suggest that President Bishop and her coterie of imperialists study history. The Xiomerans have never broken at the blade of others, and while the day may come someday when our resolve fails and our strength breaks, I will personally be damned if today is that day, and I know you feel the same way," the Security Secretary added, stirring up a series of determined and angry chants from the crowd.

While the government has not formally announced a response to the Zamastanian sanctions, the Emperor and the Great Council are reportedly studying a series of potential responses. A spokesperson for the Palace of Flowers confirmed that there will be an announcement shortly.

Immigration to Xiomera increases, government report notes

Despite recent anti-Xiomeran stances taken around the region, the Directorate of Immigration, Naturalization and Inculcation of Citizenship Values (DINIC) has reported a significant increase in immigration to Xiomera as compared to this time last year. "For the first two quarters of 2019, we have had 39,936 immigrants to Xiomera in all categories. This compares to the 27,246 immigrants to Xiomera we had for this time period last year," DINIC director Ichnolli stated in her quarterly report to the Great Council.

The DINIC report cited the strong Xiomeran economy, coupled with aggressive recruitment of skilled immigrants by the government and the Xiomeran business sector, as a major reason for the growth. The report also noted that other nations that have been struggling have had an increase in people seeking the brighter shores of Huenya, and the brighter future and better life that are possible in Xiomera for the hardworking and talented of all nationalities and backgrounds.

Secretary of Security Tepilcayotl, whose Secretariat oversees DINIC, said that the reason people come to Xiomera is clear. "Despite conspiracies against us, the Xiomeran Empire remains a stable, harmonious, ever-advancing and growing nation. A good life is not only possible here, it is probable. People are naturally drawn to that," the Secretary said. Tepilcayotl went on to mention a recent article in the Lauchenoirian Guardian in which a recent Lauchenoirian immigrant to Xiomera was quoted: "Why would I support democracy anyway? It is a system that naturally leads to conflict." The immigrant went on to cite democracy as a cause of the recent civil war in his home country, a point that the Security Secretary has been making frequently in defense of the Xiomeran system.

"You cannot have prosperity without stability. Xiomera is stable, and therefore prosperous. As more and more people realize that you don't need to be a democracy to give your citizens a good life, Xiomera will only continue to grow," the Secretary added.
