Government gives Laeral overture cautious consideration
The Imperial government is "seriously considering" seeking expanded trade relations with Laeral, in the wake of a recent announcement by that country's Trade Minister that they would be interested in seeking closer trade ties with the Empire.
Trade Minister Raoul Chen stated in a Laeral government committee meeting that their goal would be to open relations with Xiomera, along with other nations such as Shuell and Kerlile, "in order to pursue mutually beneficial trade". This was met with cautious optimism by Secretary for Trade and Economic Relations Tlanextia. "We would be most interested in pursuing mutually beneficial trade and diplomatic relations with Laeral, as we indeed are with all nations of the IDU," the Secretary said. "We believe there is much our nations can offer each other."
She added, however, that any expanded trade between Xiomera and any other nation would be contingent on it being "mutually respectful as well as mutually beneficial." While the Secretary did not elaborate, it is believed that this was in response to a later statement from Minister Chen that expanded trade "will allow for ideas of democracy, human rights, and Laeralian values to enter these nations." Trade relations between Xiomera and the outside world have historically been contingent upon it remaining a strictly business affair, without impacting the social harmony of the Empire. But with the Emperor and other tribal leaders eagerly seeking to rev up the already humming Xiomeran economy, it is highly likely that some minor accomodation will be made to appease foreign concerns about human rights in order to facilitate trade.
In a related story, Secretary Tlanextia confirmed that the government is also considering extending a trade package and offer of investment to Lauchenoiria, in a bid to deepen relations as well as to help that nation recover from its recent civil war. That, too, is likely contingent on whether or not the Marwick administration is willing to work with a nation that does not wish to be part of any democratic crusade.
Extradition sought for "pirate" media outlet accused
The Secretariat of Justice has sent arrest warrant "red notices" to the nations of Zamastan, Laeral and Lauchenoiria, requesting the "detention and speedy extradition" of Xiomeran citizens believed to be behind the operations of the "pirate" media outlet XUN.
"The ongoing investigation by the Xiomeran Imperial Police and the Directorate of Media Review has determined that several of the individuals behind this subversive operation are currently hiding in your jurisdiction. The operations of this unapproved 'pirate' media operation are responsible for continuing disruption to social harmony and cohesion, as well as blatant misrepresentation of facts and manipulation of coverage to try to turn the Xiomeran people against their duly chosen government representatives," Secretary of Justice Cētlalhui said in a letter attached to the arrest warrants. "We urge that you detain these individuals and deliver them to the appropriate Xiomeran authorities as quickly as possible, as their actions will cause grave harm to the Xiomeran people if left unhindered," the letter added.
XIP officers delivered warrants linked to five Xiomeran citizens in Laeral, four in Zamastan, and two in Lauchenoiria. Since the Empire has no extradition treaties with any of those nations, Justice officials acknowledged it is unlikely that the governments in question will honor the warrants. It is hoped, however, that the formal notice will result in the governments in question taking some form of action to prevent XUN from using their countries as safe havens to continue to spread an anti-Xiomeran message. While no mention has been made of any kind of punitive measures should the nations in question ignore the warrants, it is unknown what other leverage Xiomera may have, if any, in the matter.
Shakeup in Necatli: Chicaliztli out as Tlatoani
After a twelve-hour marathon session of the Necatli ihuicatl marked by six failed attempts to call a vote, opponents of the sitting tribal leader Chicaliztli were finally able to force a vote, which led to his removal as tlatoani of the Necatli tribe.
In a vote of 350 to 140, with six absences and four abstentions, the ihuicatl voted to replace Chicaliztli with Noxochicotzin, his chief rival and architect of the bid to change leaders. Noxochicotzin had charged that Chicaliztli was hindering attempts to develop the Necatli tribal domain due to his personal rivalry with the Emperor, as well as his "disloyal anti-Imperial attitude". The supporters of Chicaliztli argued that he was standing up for the independence of the Necatli from Imperial interference, as well as trying to preserve their unique status as the least developed and most rural region of Xiomera. The vote finally turned on the resentment many of Chicaliztli's opponents felt about the relatively poor Necatli economy and a poverty rate considerably higher than the rest of Xiomera.
Noxochicotzin will take over the office of tlatoani immediately, and has already planned to meet with Imperial officials to jump-start plans to boost Necatli development.
