Corruption probe yields swift justice

Two cases of public corruption have ended, with swift punishment for those who would abuse their positions of authority.

In the first case, a claim of bribery within the Xiomeran Civil Service in Teoxihuicoatl has led to the conviction of the director of the local Cihuatzin office, a Grade XS-15 official named Cakulha. The official was investigated by the Xiomeran Imperial Police and the Cihuatzin Inspector-General’s Office in a joint operation, after complaints were made to the Inspector-General that Cakulha was demanding bribes in exchange for posts within the Civil Service. A lengthy and extensive sting operation amassed enough evidence to prove Cakulha’s guilt. After being found guilty, Cakulha has been stripped of his position and sentenced to execution for violation of Imperial anti-corruption laws. In addition, all of Cakulha’s assets will be seized by the Empire. The accused had appealed his case to the tlaxitlán (appeal court) of Xiomera tribal domain, after that domain’s teccalli (trial court) found him guilty. The tlaxitlán, however, found no grounds to overturn the previous ruling. Cakulha tried to appeal his sentence to the Emperor and the cihuacoatl of Xiomera, but was denied a hearing.

Five Civil Service appointees who were proven to have provided Cakulha bribes in exchange for their jobs have been stripped of their positions, forced to surrender their assets to the Empire, and barred from ever holding any kind of government office in perpetuity. Their appeals have likewise been denied.

In the second case, from the Tepiltzin tribal domain, an officer of the Xiomeran Imperial Police has been found guilty of official oppression and abuse of power by the Tepiltzin courts. Yaotl, a sergeant with the XIP based in the small village of Metlcoātl, was accused of demanding bribes in exchange for various favors. He was also accused of denying local residents access to local amenities, such as parks and public spaces, unless he was paid to “provide security”. An internal XIP investigation sparked by locals’ complaints led to his eventual arrest. As a result of his conviction, Yaotl will be fired from the XIP, will be fined in the amount of 10,000 quetzals, and will be barred from holding any government office ever again. Yaotl was also sentenced to six months in jail. Yaotl was likewise denied a hearing from the Emperor and cihuacoatl.

“Corruption within the ranks of those who hold public office in Xiomera is a direct assault on the public trust in their servants,” Secretary of Justice Cētlalhui declared in announcing the results of the cases. “We have absolutely zero tolerance for those who would abuse their privilege to serve the Empire and its people. Let this be a warning to anyone else even thinking of engaging in such corrupt acts. The price for such crimes is always more than you will want to pay,” Cētlalhui added.

No progress in discussions in Necatli, early vote likely to be called

Despite lengthy negotiations between the two sides in the ongoing Necatli tribal dispute, Secretary of Tribal Relations Iccauhyotli announced that no progress has been made.

“Neither side has moved from their demands, and there is not much more in the way of mediation that we can do. Regrettably, unless one side or the other has a sudden change of heart, we will have to end our attempts at mediation and allow the Necatli to resolve this matter on their own,” Iccauhyotli said in a brief press conference outside the Necatli tribal council hall.

With no sign that Tlatoani Chicaliztli, the Necatli tribal leader, will back down from his refusal to allow several Imperial trade and development projects to begin in the Necatli domain, it is widely expected that his chief opponent, Mayor Noxochicotzin of Nezahualpilli, will amass enough votes to call for an early vote for tlatoani by the end of the week.
