Government intervention in Necatli: the plot thickens

Nezahualpilli - The announcement that the government is sending Secretary of Tribal Relations Iccauhyotli to "mediate" the fight over Necatli economic sovereignty is just another sign that the government plans to "convince" the Necatli to allow uncontrolled and unwanted economic development in their domain "for their own good".

To cover the fact that they are already intervening in Necatli with their plans to create supposed "economic development opportunities" (really just plans to start selling Necatli resources and infrastructure to foreigners and greedy Xiomerans), the government is sending Secretary Iccauhyotli to mediate a dispute they caused. If the wishes of the Necatli were respected, and the unwanted development plans dropped, there would be no dispute in the first place, after all.

But there's money to be made, and if the leaders in Tlālacuetztla like anything more than the sound of their own voices, it's the sound of coins clinking into their piggy banks. Their useful puppet, Mayor Noxochicotzin, has now stirred up this mess even further, with his bid to force out Tlatoani Chicaliztli due to supposed outrage over his resistance to the development plans. The not-so-good mayor has been gunning for the Tlatoani's spot for a while now; this just gives him a convenient pretext to try to force his longtime rival out of power.

When the interests of the greedy and the power hungry merge, only bad things happen. But the intervention of the Secretariat of Tribal Relations, the agency that is supposed to protect the interests of the other tribes, will surely prevent harm, right?

Wrong. Iccauhyotli has never been particularly eager to challenge the Emperor or the rest of the Emperor's cabinet, and there is no reason to believe this will be an exception. Iccauhyotli will undoubtedly try to pressure Chicaliztli to accept the designs the Emperor has on his domain "for their own good". He will pretend to intervene with Noxochicotzin for appearance's sake, and when Chicaliztli refuses to surrender, the Secretary will throw up his hands and say "well, we tried". The stage will then be set for the usurpation of Necatli power for Imperial visions of quetzals falling like rain into the coffers of the Imperial treasury.

The only thing we can hope for at this point is that the ihuicatl of Necatli will not fall victim to greed or to being duped, and will choose to keep Tlatoani Chicaliztli exactly where he is now - as the leader of his tribe.
