Democracy movements "anti-Xiomeran", Emperor declares
Tlālacuetztla - In a speech to graduating cadets at the Imperial Military Academy, Huey Tlatoani Topilpopoca denounced recent stirrings of so-called "democracy" movements in Xiomera as "being totally incompatible with Xiomeran values", and vowed to continue government efforts to eliminate such movements.
"Democracy is often touted as being the best, the most effective, and the most beneficial way to run a society and a nation. But Xiomera is clear evidence that is not always the case," the Emperor declared. "Our system of Xiomeran Meritocracy, crafted by the wise Empress Camaxtica almost 200 years ago, has brought Xiomera unparalleled stability, prosperity and success. It ended the constant fighting between the four tribes of Huenya, it ended the tyrannical rule of warlords, it brought us into the modern age. It ensured that individuals of supreme merit, talent and drive are the ones who lead, as they should. We are not plagued by the rule of elites, by nepotism or corruption, or by strange systems that use chracteristics like birth, gender, race or class to place the unqualified in power. We have seen what so-called 'democracy' brings other lands - chaos, unrest, violence, and rule by the unfit. We will never, never, never allow Xiomera to follow that same insane path," the Emperor added, to thunderous applause from the gathered cadets. "Xiomera is blessedly free of the mob rule, the rule by popularity contest calling itself 'elections', the unrest and strife that plague other lands. We will never allow our golden land of Xiomera, the cradle of the legacy of the Huenyan tribes, to ever be destroyed by such anti-Xiomeran ideas," the Emperor added.
The Emperor's remarks were in response to a tiny, disaffected group of people within Xiomeran society who blame the government and the society, rather than their own shortcomings, lack of ability, or drive, for their relatively low position in Xiomeran society. Such groups have been pressing the Imperial Government to make so-called "reforms", but if the Emperor's words are any indication, Xiomera will instead continue to follow the path that has brought it great success for two centuries.
While the Emperor's remarks were intended mainly for domestic consumption, some officials expressed concern that his remarks could be seen as commentary on recent regional events many Xiomerans attribute to the "evils of democracy", such as the recent civil war in Lauchenoiria or the unrest in Kerlile's matriarchial system. Secretary for International Affairs Huitzilhuani was quick to assure reporters that the Emperor's remarks "were only meant in a general sense".
Government to seek trade, diplomatic relations
Acalan, Necatli Tribal Region - At the inauguration of a newly opened port and trading center in the Necatli tribal region today, Xiomeran Secretary for Trade and Economic Relations Tlanextia announced that the Imperial Government will soon seek to initiate expanded trade and diplomatic ties with its neighbors in the region.
"Xiomera is prosperous, but cannot remain prosperous in isolation," the Secretary said. "To that end, we must improve our connections with the wider world," she said, adding that the government will soon actively begin soliciting expanded ties with other nations. Of particular interest to the Government are high-tech partnerships, research partnerships, and deals to help develop some of the more isolated and underdeveloped parts of Xiomera, such as the Necatli tribal region.
Secretary Tlanextia dismissed concerns about Xiomera possibly being at a disadvantage against larger regional economies if it loosens the reins on trade as "cowardice".
"The great Emperor Achcauhyotl wisely said it thusly: 'Competition is everything, everything is competition.' Xiomera is strong, and will only grow stronger as we test ourselves against the world. We can compete with anyone, and we will do so. To pursue any other course is to invite one's stagnation and death," Secretary Tlanextia said.
While most Xiomerans are excited about the prospects that increased trade and diplomacy could bring, the notoriously isolationist Necatli have expressed concern about further economic initiatives in their region. However, the Government believes that all Xiomeran tribal regions must be on the same economic footing, and that the Necatli cannot continue to live in isolation from the rest of Xiomera, or from the world, for that matter.
