Analysis
It was a terrible night for the Communist Party, as predicted. The party lost well over 50% of their seats in the Federal Parliament, being pushed into a mere fourth place, behind the Conservatives and the Greens. Their presidential candidate finished in fifth place. With the only party willing to work with the Communists being the Left Alliance, it is all but certain that they will not play any part in the next government.
While the Liberals remained the largest party, they still lost a considerable number of seats, and will need to work with multiple parties if they wish to form a government. The real winners of the night were the Conservative Party, pushing into second place from their previous fourth. The Conservative Party had previously expressed a willingness to work with the Liberals, which is one possible future coalition. The other choice for the Liberals is to work with the Greens, only one seat behind the Conservatives – or, indeed, both together. However, any coalition excluding one of these parties would need at least two further parties.
The Social Democratic Party and the Feminist Party were wiped out, likely for broadly the same reason – suspected Kerlian ties. Suspicion of Kerlile has risen greatly since the war, owing to Charissa Clarke’s secret Kerlian identity. It is unlikely the SDP will recover from their leader Cassidy Laurens’ blunder any time soon.
Other winners are the Left Alliance, winning 12 seats in place of their previous zero. They aimed to attract Communist voters disillusioned with their party’s role in last year’s war, or disagreeing with the more authoritarian aspects of the Communists’ manifesto. This strategy appears to have been broadly successful – although the increase in Left Alliance votes does not account for all the drain from the Communists. Evidence suggests that support for capitalism is on the rise in Lauchenoiria.
Two regional parties now have representation in the Federal Parliament – the Aelurian Independence Party (AIP), and the pro-independence and pro-Spanish language Partido Anarquista de Yervia (Anarchist Party of Yervia, PAY). The AIP lost half their seats, possibly owing to their failed bid at independence in March of this year, or possibly due to their lack of presence during this year’s election campaign. Meanwhile, PAY gained their first representation. It will be interesting to see how the unconventional party behaves in parliament.
Controversial far-right party Lauchenoiria First managed to greatly increase its representation, which will come as a disappointment to many – especially immigrants, who Lauchenoiria First has been especially hostile to. Two new parties, the LDA and the Pacifist Party, have also managed to gain representation, and Alex Marwick of the LDA made it through to the second round of the presidential election, which will come as a shock to many. It is clear that the war has changed the shape of Lauchenoirian politics considerably.
The results of the presidential election will also be shocking to many. The success of incumbent president Rogelio Paloma will come as a surprise to some, and will be entirely expected by others. Independent candidates have historically not done very well in Lauchenoiria – but anyone familiar with the popularity of Paloma will be unsurprised. The incumbent president was a compromise candidate initially, and yet somehow manages to please Lauchenoirians across the political spectrum.
Liberal Party candidate Nina Pond very narrowly lost out on a spot in the second round to her LDA rival Alex Marwick, a fellow centrist. Marwick was a popular figure during the civil war, and is better known amongst the general public compared to Nina Pond. With the two so close ideologically, many Liberal voters appear to have opted to support Marwick. This will be a great disappointment to her and to the Liberal Party, who were hoping to a return of the Liberal domination of the executive branch of government that was in place before the war, under President Walker. With such a close result, it will be especially disappointing for Ms Pond.
The second round of the election will see Alberto Causer face off against Alex Marwick, and will take place on the 30th June.
