Parliamentary election date set for 16th June

Interim Prime Minister Keitha Noguera confirmed today, after discussions with Sanctaria, that the date of Lauchenoiria’s parliamentary elections has finally been set for the 16th June 2019, along with the first round of presidential elections due this year.
The elections were originally scheduled for 2018, but were postponed by Suleman Chaher during the civil war. Within the Haven Accords which ended the war, a provision was made that new elections would take place to the Lauchenoirian parliament when the Guarantor (Sanctaria) was “satisfied there is no threat to [the election’s] fairness and security”.
The announcement was welcomed by the leaders of all the main political parties, some of whom have been impatient in waiting for an election date. “Now we can finally move on from the destruction of the war, and show the world that Lauchenoiria is still democratic,” said Lucie Scott, leader of the Green Party, who had been in coalition with Laura Moore’s Liberals before the war.
Opinion polls give no clear answer to who will come out top in the election – but one interesting trend is that both the main parties – the Liberals and the Communists – have dropped considerably in the polls since the war. Voters appear to blame these two parties for the conflict, and are turning to smaller parties in search of something new. It is considered unlikely that any two parties will be able to form a coalition, and a larger coalition is expected.
Several new political parties have emerged since the conflict – notably the Pacifist Party and the Lauchenoirian Democratic Alliance. The LDA are a centrist party, who present themselves as an alternative to the Liberal party who would “never risk the security of Lauchenoirian citizens as Laura Moore did”. Their platform is broadly similar to that of the Liberal Party, but they advocate more safeguards against further conflict, and claim the Liberals ‘hurt’ Lauchenoiria in the war and do not deserve further power.
The Pacifist Party is exactly what it says on the tin – they oppose war. They want a clause in the new constitution forbidding the Federation of Lauchenoiria from going to war under any circumstances. They also want to reduce the military budget to zero, and focus on maintaining positive diplomatic relations with “all nations” in the hopes of averting further conflict. Many say this is an extreme position to take, but the polls show that it is gaining increased support as time goes on.
Also on the rise, and with a real chance of gaining its first representation at a national level, is the Partido Anarquista de Yervia, a pro-independence anarchist party in Yervia province. They have existed for decades on the fringe, but support for them in the city of Usera has spiked since the war. Usera was under Resistance control for most of the war, but was occupied by Kerlile in August.
The election is likely to be one of the most interesting in recent history, coming so soon after the end of a war that devastated the nation. The elections are viewed as a chance for Lauchenoirians to prove to the world that they can come together and rebuild after the civil war, and to prove that democracy is intact in Lauchenoiria.
