Results of Week 3
United New England defeated Bonalando, 2-0, capping off a series of wins for UNE. Played at the Stade Nationale de Lyrene, the New Englanders played what analysts called a 'beautiful game', keeping the ball in their possession for most of the match. Miguel Ferrera-Mendez scored off of a pass by Peter Khoury in the 59th minute, Samnang Tep scored in the 77th minute, the ball just barely slipping through Bonalandan keeper Yun Bao's fingers. With this win, United New England advances to the knockout rounds, where they will be favored.Lauchenoirian strikers overran the Legionan defense in an intense match at Parc de Noblesse, in Loiraine, defeating the Winter Tigers 4-0. The first half was scoreless until the 44th minute, when Lauchenoirian midfielder Ciriaco Gutierrez scored after a scramble for the ball in front of the goal. The Lauchenoirians' blistering attack in the second half seemed to overwhelm the Legionan defenders, with Caelan Potter, Stewart Steffen, and Caelan Potter again scoring in succession, while the Legionan midfield seemed unable to gain ball possession. With this win, Lauchenoiria advances out of the group and into the knockout rounds.
Shuell defeated Lumeau 2-0 at Songshan Athletic Arena, despite the presence of a large crowd cheering for the Lumean underdogs. Shuell's John Hansen scored early on in the game, and Shuell retreated into a defensive-minded formation which repelled the Lumean attempts to crack it. While Lumean goalkeeper Archer Ryley made a heroic save in the 68th minute, rallying his team, Michael Gardner's goal at the 81st minute sealed Lumeau's fate. Shuell advances to the knockout rounds.
The soccer-mad nation of Slokais Islands defeated The Dezreik 1-0 in front a massive crowd at the Stade Cenefort. While the first half of the match was a tense defensive game, Slokaisian striker David Harris scored despite a spectacular defensive effort by The Dezreik's Diane Raman in the 65th minute. A Dezreikan counter-attack led by Nikola Planck narrowly failed to score an equalizer, sending Slokais Islands into the knockout rounds and the lovable underdogs of The Dezreik back home.
Going into the Laeral-Conternia match, the Laeralites knew that they would need to win the match, and then hope that the Gnejs-Verwood match would not be a draw. The match, played before a crowd of 76,000, was a tense one, with both teams knowing that failing to win there would spell the end of their chances of surviving the group. Laeral's Wen Guanyu scored to wild cheering and applause in the 24th minute, only for Conternia's Klaus Mikkels to score an equalizer which just brushed past the fingers of Laeralian goalkeeper Benjamin Germain. When the home team's Thomas Zhao scored again in the second half, the stadium erupted in cheers, as the Laeralites believed that they had the match sewn up. Conternia's Michael Kubben pulled off a miraculous goal in the five minutes of injury time, practically trampling defender Tom Levy to score. The game ended as a 2-2 draw, ending both teams' hopes of advancing. Violence was expected, and although some bottles and flares did rain down onto the Conternian side following the match and Michael Kubben's name was much cursed, police maintained a heavy presence on the streets of Laeralsford to ensure that fans didn't get out of hand.
Verwood edged out Gnejs, 3-2, at Hanshui Stadium. The Dandelions established a 2-0 lead at the end of the first half, following goals by Omar Lillestrí and Jack Wiijk. Verwood's offense rallied in the second half, however, roaring back with goals by David Mitchell, Brady James, and a spectacular goal by Ethan Hunter, to win the game and Group C. Both Verwood and Gnejs will advance to the knockout stages.
Trive and Gonhog tied, 1-1, after a largely uneventful match at Laeralsford Sporting Center, whose most notable feature was an extended sequence of headers by the Trivean team which culminated in a goal by Trive's Roberto Ivanov at the 61st minute. Gonhog replied with an equalizer catapulted into the net by Sebastian Pokorney after a masterful pass upfield by Carl Bristow, at the 70th minute.
New Lusitania tied Libertas Omnium Maximus, 2-2, in an action-packed match at Parc de Auvergne, with 43,000 in attendance. The Selecção entered with high hopes, hoping that a victory over L.O.M. would allow them to make it out of the 'group of death' and into the knockout rounds. Playing their standard 3-5-2 formation, New Lusitania dominated early on, knocking LOM off guard with their swift passes, and keeping possession of the ball. In the 29th minute, the Selecção advanced upfield, with André Silveira driving the ball past Libertan goalie Johan Vanderbilt into the back of the net. The Libertans scored an equalizer by Luke Brookshire at the 45th minute, after a goal-line scramble. Undeterred, the Selecção scored again at the 58th minute, by Bruno Fernando. Having secured a 2-1 lead, New Lusitania quickly substituted in it's defenders, hoping to hold off the Libertans. This would not last, however, as Libertan striker Ying Lan scored in the 82nd minute. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, with Libertas Omnium Maximus advancing out of Group D.
