Right - here goes.

I like your idea of Sodor having a continental crust - the island was once mined quite extensively albeit with relatively basic tools and equipment and was thankfully never subject to more aggressive modern methods since technology/society stagnated during the mid twentieth century and it was only during the late 1980's that things got going again...but that's for another thread.

It make sense for the Island to be part of the continental shelf - I'm thinking that the small entourage of Islands might have provided 'stepping stones' to bridge the gap for migratory birds.

I definitely see there being an area which is good for fishing in the territorial waters. Even pre-stagnation fishing was a source of income for the Islanders and continues to be so in the present.

Finally I don't think that a larger game bird would have been introduced for hunting purposes.
