FAILED: Repeal "Sexual Freedom"
#1

Quote: Repeal "Sexual Freedom"

A proposal to repeal a previously passed resolution

Category: Repeal

Resolution: #7

Proposed by: Karmicaria

Description: UN Resolution #7: Sexual Freedom (Category: Human Rights; Strength: Strong) shall be struck out and rendered null and void.

Argument: The United Nations,

RECOGNIZING the Universal right to privacy for sexual relations;

COMMENDING the intent of Sexual Freedom to protect such privacy;

MINDFUL of various important reasons, for example, criminal investigations and public safety, where the government has a legitimate right to protect its citizens;

CONCERNED that the limitation of UNR #7 to the "home" does not allow for non "home" private settings, such as rental properties, hotel rooms, etc.;

FEARFUL that the resolution, as written may result in unreported epidemics, unsolved murders, and a number of other problems which can have a dramatic impact on the population at large;

WISHING to curtail continued omissions;

ENCOURAGING a more detailed replacement;

Hereby repeals UNR#7 Sexual Freedom

This is what we would be repealing:

UNITED NATIONS RESOLUTION #7
Sexual Freedom

A resolution to improve worldwide human and civil rights.

Category: Human Rights

Strength: Strong

Proposed by: Armstrongonia

Description: What goes on between two (or more) consenting adults in the privacy of their homes should not be the concern of the state unless it is neccesary to enquire about the afore mentioned activities for medical reasons (e.g. if the individuals wish to give blood etc.).

Votes For: 2,538
Votes Against: 318

Implemented: Thu Mar 13 2003

Seems like a case of an overly simple original resolution that needs to be updated with a more detailed version. I still wish the people who propose the repeal would have to also write the new resolution covering the subject so we could see and review that. Ultimately, though, I'm for the repeal.

Just another example of the need for an alternative procedure to repeal and then replace.

As far as I know, not one IDU resolution has been subjected to repeal, so I think we are fortunate to avoid it. I'm likely to support it, especially if there's evidence of a replacement coming down the pike on fairly short order.

I really would like to see a replacement for this, but I'll vote FOR.

It seems that too many good resolutions are getting repealed and never replaced, and I don't particularly like it.

Since Stolidia isn't a member of the NSUN, I generally feel it's inappropriate for me to participate in discussion here (and I know better than to vote in the poll). In this case, though, there's obviously some genuine concern here about the probability of a replacement resolution if this repeal passes. So I queried the Foreign Ministry of Ausserland, since I had reason to believe they were well aware of the situation. Here's what I was told, for what it's worth:

"The author of the projected replacement for the 'Sexual Freedom' resolution chose to develop it almost exclusively in the UN Old Guard forum. Work on the projected replacement has been in progress since late July. We are completely confident that the author is determined to submit the replacement should the repeal pass. Too much work has gone into the development to even suspect otherwise. The discussion of the projected replacement, to include the various drafts, is in a public sub-forum on the UNOG site, accessible to all: Sexual Freedom, A possible Replacement."

Hope that helps. :unsure:

In light of the message sent from Ausserland through Stolidia, the GPRG will be voting FOR.

Here here, and thanks for letting us know, Stolidia.

I agree that many repeals have happened without a replacement. Would it be a noble goal to check all the repealed resolutions that haven't had replacements yet and craft possible replacements?

I'm talking about an IDU committe of course, since I'm no expert at resolution creation.

Thoughts?

I think it would be great if we could get more involved in replacing these resolutions. We have a lot of people who are very good at writing resolutions here.

We could make a list of the ones we want to see brought back and then we could have people write, or help others write, replacements. But this is a matter best left to Ceo or Mik or GS or someone who's had a lot of resolution experience.

Based on the information that a replacement is being developed, I've voted for the repeal.

Concerning an IDU project to develop replacements, we need to see if (1) there are enough of us to work on them, (2) we can agree on which topics replacements are desireable, and (3) checking to see if replacement efforts are under way elsewhere that we can work with.

Replacement for its own sake has no purpose.

Ceorana will be voting for, although I'm going to pull a statwank and resign from the UN for a short time if it looks like it's going to pass... Wink

The original resolution seems vague and very poorly written.

Thalatash votes FOR.

It does help. Mikitivity has changed its absention (not recorded here, but in the UN) to an affirmative vote. We'll be voting FOR here as well.

On the subject of non-UN members participating in the UN debates, my government feels that though only UN members should vote in the regional poll, that non-UN members have just as much a right to participate in our region's UN debates.

Guess the repeal group is going to have to find a way to get the replacement adopted first.
