Oh. I just saw this now!
Yep, what better way to celebrate a birthday than with the worst blizzard in a decade? - a mandatory non-essential business closure(that means clubs and pubs), unbelievable gridlock in my neighborhood, three frozen people, 20,000 new troops in Iraq AND having no liqueur in the house. lol! You would be forgiven for thinking it was the end of the world...but alas, 'twas just me birthday.
Ha - it was a seriously unbelievable day. I went to class by walking across the 25th/University Bridge(I thought I was going to die, seriously...)- which had been canceled and the 10,000 or so students who use city transit were huddled up throughout the Place Riel studymall waiting for transit to show up. So then I figured I'd go see how things were going at work. The transit ride from campus to 8th, which usually takes 5 minutes was 1 1/2 hours! Unbelievable! Turned out noone was there, as the city had asked all businesses to close, so I opened it up, made some coffee and read the paper for a few hours since all phone lines were down and the city urged people not to use their cellphones unless in emergencies. Eventually I texted a friend and had her brave the freeway to come get me - and on our way to my place we were turned back by police because University and Buckwold bridges had been closed. Eventually I made it home by bribing a friend who drives a big truck with free starbucks. He and I then had a few drinks at my place, lit the fire and played Stockticker(best board game ever). Crazy day.
