Which sports are popular in your nation?

MikitivityAug 11 2005, 10:31 PMYou'll also note that on NSWiki that I went ahead and placed the IDU Cart. entry as being Domnonia's category.  However, with NSWiki stuff, if anybody posts their updates here, others of us can go in and tie some of your entries to our entries.

I've seen a few of us being active on NSWiki and that is great!  Actually, I was going to ask Adam Island to consider hosting an exhibition AIBL game in Miervatia City once a year and also feeling free to have some Adam Island players come from other IDU nations.  Smile  Sadly, the Thuvians are not idea for baseball, so it is a domed sport.  Wink
Sounds like a great idea to me- a few spring training games in the great white north might be fun Wink
Bwahahaha! Excellent.

I'll start working on a domed stadium in Miervatia City, what will have a baseball configuration ... during the AIBL season it will also be used for concerts. I'll link the NSWiki entry here when done.

DataGenesisAug 12 2005, 05:09 PMBaseball? Pah. We want Football! Aussie rules of course!
Groot GoudaAug 12 2005, 06:08 PMGo Magpies!
GrosseschnauzerAug 13 2005, 12:22 AMMaybe we could have baseball and all three forms of football. That would justify the costs of multi-purpose stadia with luxury boxes and all the trimmings!
As long as it isn't a full season sort of thing, there might be enough interest in my nation for exhibition games, and that would certainly justify the costs of multi-purpose stadiums (stadia?).
DataGenesisAug 13 2005, 06:00 AMHmm... good idea, however There are more than three versions of football, methinks! Tongue

Aussie Rules
Soccer ("football")
Grid Iron
Rugby Union
Rugby League
Gaelic
International Rules (Australian + Gaelic Hybrid)

And probably others that I don't remember!

In Adam Island we play many sports. Our favorite is professional baseball, and I have a wiki entry on it.

Right now the college basketball season is in full swing. In 2003 the pro basketball season will start, in 2004 the college football and professional soccer leagues will begin play and in 2005 a pro football league is expected to begin. (the simulation games I use have those as their earliest start dates)

In Mikitivity there isn't enough interest for too many professional sports, though citizens do like to listen on the radio to baseball and softball games (men's and women's respectively, and both are equally followed). Football both traditional and American styled are also followed.

Mikitivians tend to hike, ride horses, and white water raft a great deal, so most of their professional sports following is still done by radio, where they can listen while doing other things, though exhibition / pre-season games are welcome in the City States. Furthermore, many citizens try out in leagues in other nations. Smile

Plenty of popular sports in Groot Gouda. Football (soccer for some) is well on top of the list, but athletics, tennis, ice-skating, cricket, baseball, etc are also popular. Strangely, so is Australian Rules Football.

Malabrians enjoy futbol (soccer) and basketball. There are talks and rumors going around that some wealthy citizens will be willing to invest in leagues for these sports, although no formal plans have been released yet as to rules and teams. Talk is that the leagues will offer franchises outside of Malabra.

By the way, in Nederland they have set up a special region where they play sports through (mostly) the UN rankings. We could do something similar, set up a championship and then calculate the scores from the worldwide UN rankings.

Until recently the most popular sport in The Free Land of Lawtonia was Wombat Tossing - also know by the shorter name of "Wom". Unfortunately in order to play Wom you need a Wombat. This sports craze regretably led to the near extinction of our national animal the Wombat. Consequently we have adopted the Drop Bear as our national animal because no one in their right mind would play games with a drop bear. Big Grin

While many sports are played in Lloegr-Cymru, cricket reigns supreme.

(It is rumoured that some of the last settlers to our land were retired Glamorgan players.)

If the system is pretty easy to run, I think that is a great idea. It also could give some nation the chance to be say our IDU Sports Director. Smile And also allow one nation to host the campionships.

If the wombats being tossed were like that image, I think I can safely say they'd not be TOUCHED let alone tossed in Mikitivity. We'd be happy to allow you to reintroduce the Wombats back into Lawtonia ... but I'm afraid we'll be hard pressed to find volunteers willing to face an angry one of ... THOSE! Wink

This is pretty neat ...

I have just received an invitation for the Lloegr-Cymru cricket team to tour a number of nations! I'll keep people posted so our gallant lads can appear in all your newspapers! We'll represent the region as well as the nation!

EDIT: spelling

Despite having begun to train a football (soccer) team for the regional tournament, standard sports are not common in Sidh Ohn (the team is primarilly being formed as a good-will act in the region.) Rather the "sports" of Sidh Ohn tend to be directly related to combat and hunting. Various forms of both armed and unarmed duels are common, as is what some have termed "Lupine Archery" which involves high speed target shooting while maneuvering through a dense obstacle course on wolfback. Similar "games" of various sorts are practiced almost uniquely by the various tribes according to their own traditions.
