Argument: 1): COMMENDING the goals of United Nations Resolution #106, Protection of Dolphins Act;

2): NOTING the passage of United Nations Resolution #119, UNCoESB;

3): FURTHER NOTING article 7 of UNCoESB which bans all hunting of endangered species, in addition to other provisions which ensure the survival of endangered species;

4): CONVINCED that Resolution #106 is rendered redundant by the protections provided in Resolution #119;

5): BELIEVING that the removal of unnecessary legislation is in the best interests of the member nations of the UN;

6): HEREBY repeals United Nations Resolution #106, Protection of Dolphins Act.

Why all this opposition? First of all, the resolution is a fine example of how not to write UN resolutions; secondly, if dolphins are endangered, they are already covered by a much better resolution. If they aren't endangered, there's no need for the whole resolution anyway.

I'd be really disappointed if the IDU would decide not to support this repeal.

I can only speak for myself, but my opposition to the repeal is based on the idea that one purpose of the law is to state ideals. While the measure may not be well crafted, it may be redundent and it may not ever cover an endangered species, it does reflect a desire to protect wildlife from indiscriminate harm wrecklessly caused by humankind. As such, I see the existing resolution as an indication of principle, if not a terribly enforceable measure.

Isn't "Protection of Endanged Species" enough principle? This resolution is repealed on grounds of redundancy, because a better, and just as principle, resolution is now in place.

One of those other nations was my government which has been extremely busy preparing for All Hallow's Eve, a major holiday in Mikitivity. Now that the holiday has passed, we'll be more active in IDU affairs again!

(Seriously, the last two weeks in October are an open season on me ... parties and family obligations right and left! For the record, I would have voted to abstain. The repeal was actually well written and founded, but I've never been absolutely thrilled that so many nations spend time repealing instead of making new and invovative resolutions.)
