King William II Stadium, Legionas
The King William II Stadium, despite being an older stadium compared to others in the tournament, still was impressive, especially when viewed from the field. And as both the Eirian and Legionite Teams filed of the field in a wave of light blue and white, the Eirian's head coach couldn't help but smile. Even though the game ended in a tie, the game was well fought on both sides, and he was proud of his boys. He patted a few of them on the back, and went over to shake hands with the Winter Tiger's coach, for good sportsmanship.
William Stevenson grinned with excitement while walking towards the tunnel, his mind deliberating on the spectacular game he just witnessed. He thought proudly of his side, which showed glimpses of the tactical brilliance he was instilling into them. He saw their mentality, once being almost non-existent, now even comparable to the great teams of old. He also deliberated on the tactics of his opposition, the argonauts, who showed great skill and cohesion on and off the ball. His thoughts were soon interrupted by Haymitch Telleau, who had put out his hand in a friendly gesture. He grasped it firmly and began,
"That was quite the match, wasn't it, Mr Telleau."
Coach Telleau shook hands firmly. "Indeed. Well, as a show of good faith, we would like to invite you out to a few drinks, to give thanks to our hosts. Do you think you could make it?".
"A round of drinks with you guys, definitely. Do you have a place in mind or would you like us to choose a place?"
"Well, We don't know any good local places here. Do you?".
"I think I know just the place. A nice bar frequented by many of the lads, I'll give you the directions so that we can use our own team buses to get there".
Telleau nodded. "Thank you! We'll meet you there!".
Christian Kowalski, the Legionite Captain, sat in the middle of the pitch, trying to catch his breath. He had given his all on the pitch, never letting up even when his body screamed for him to ease his determination. His shirt, drenched in sweat, clung onto him uncomfortably. The wind, in its brutality, punished him, blowing incessantly onto his drenched back. The Centre Forward lay down, the sounds of the crowds fading from him. He began to whistle his favorite tune, a lullaby taught to him by his long dead grandmother when he was still a child. His mind raced, analyzing all the chances he had missed, the lapses in concentration and the simple errors he had made throughout the match. He knew he shouldn't beat himself about the result, hell, he may have even scored the goal of the tournament with that scissor kick, but he couldn't resist blaming himself for a few missed chances. He opened his eyes to see a strange yet familiar face gaze down at him, smiling. It was Kevin Taylor, the Argonaut Keeper, smiling down at him.
Kevin smiled at the Legionite Captain, offering a hand to help him up. He was drenched in sweat, like Kowalski, and had a few sore spots he had intercepted balls in. "Good Game. And Nice shot, by the way. I wasn't expecting it".
"Thanks Kevin," Kowalski said while grasping the shot stopper's burly hands, his gloves moist. "You should take those gloves off before your hands bake in them," Kowalski laughed, "And yeah, good game. I have to say you were quite the adversary, but at least I got one over you."
Kevin Chuckled. "That's true. And yes, I probably should get rid of these gloves. To be fair, your shirt is as soaked as my gloves". He patted him on the back. "Coach Telleau is asking your coach if we could take both teams out for drinks. It's an Eirian Tradition. Shall we join them?"
"I think we should, it'd be fun to hang out with the so called *Argonauts*, and I'm sure the lads will be itching for a few rounds of drinks. I think Stevenson is telling your coach about the clubhouse, actually I hope he is. That's my favorite spot, right by the beach. Right shall we head off to the tunnel? I'm sure the press would be itching to grab a picture of us two."
"Gotta make a good impression for the press. And the clubhouse sounds nice. Our clubhouse back in Geminus is right on the River, and Sunsets are beautiful." He walked with Christian to the tunnel, waving to the fans and press with an ear-splitting grin.
As the two walked a flurry of reporters and photographers swarmed them, the incessant flash of the cameras almost nauseating them. Reporters overwhelmed them with questions of which they could only answer with short statements before being escorted by stewards to the tunnels. Right before the two entered, Kowalski had an idea that was sure to make the press go wild. "Hey Kevin, how about we exchange shirts, to celebrate going against each other today"
Kevin nodded, taking off his shirt revealing a ripped physique and a few bruises on his shoulders and arms. He flashed a wink at a group of shouting fans and handed his shirt over to Kowalski. "They'll love it".
The tunnel immediately filled with flashing lights from the cameras, the cameramen realizing what the two stars were doing. Christian took off his shirt, his glistening ripped body laid bare for all to gaze at in awe. Many turned towards the two, who were grinning uncontrollably as they shook hands, more as a mere formality for the press to eat up, and exchanged shirts. "I knew that would happen," Kowalski said, "see you in a few, Kevin!"
"See you then!". He said, putting on the Legionite's shirt on and heading into the tunnel, giving one last wave to the crowd.
---
As Kevin Taylor entered the Eirian locker room, his traded Legionite jersey caught the attention of his teammates. Thomas Salze, one of his defenders, playfully smacked his back. "Getting friendly with the competition, are we?". He asked while changing his shirt. "And that means you would have had to switch in front of the press. They probably adored it. But showing off your muscles in front of the crowds is probably going to make a lot of people jealous".
Coach Telleau caught everyone's attention as he stepped into the room. "Speaking of getting friendly with the competition, I invited the Legionite team out for drinks. We're heading to a local clubhouse to blow off some steam. Hurry up and shower, let's have some fun!".
---
William Stevenson rounded up his boys together in the dressing room, most of them having already had a chance to hop in the showers. His captain, Kowalski, and deputy captain, Westnall, stood by him. The manager scanned the room, registering the upbeat mood of the players. "Having a party planned today lads?" the gaffer asked playfully. The players, already aware of the deal the manager had made with coach Telleau, answered in the affirmative. "I know most of you have already heard through the grapevine, we've been invited by the Eirians for drinks at the Orion Clubhouse over by the beach. Everyone get readied up, we'll talk about the match tomorrow!" The players cheered with excitement as they returned to freshening up. As Kowalski was folding his newly acquired Eirian Goalkeeper Jersey, Marcus Zervas, a keen central midfielder, caught eye of it. "Nice catch there Chris, it'll fit well in your collection." he said while smacking Kowalski's back playfully. "I'm hearing a lot of chitchat from you two!" Stevenson commented at the two stars, "You'll talk about the kit later"
The two team buses arrive at the Orion Clubhouse, both teams in high spirits.
The Eirians headed to the bar, handing out the drink menus among themselves and the Legionites. "How adventurous are you all?" Coach Telleau asked the Legionites next to him.
Mr Stevenson chuckled at Coach Telleau's question, "Well, we'll find out by the night's end. Don't worry, none of the lads are lightweights." He looked at his players and laughed, he knew he could give them this night to go crazy.
"Alright then. Let's go crazy!" Telleay read the menu and got a shot of strong Eirian Spēce to start off the night. "To fair games!" He said before taking the shot.
"To fair games!" Mr Stevenson said and downed the first shot with his new friend. Kowalski immediately found his way to Kevin Taylor, who was chatting with some of his teammates. they soon assembled at the pool table, drinks in hand. The job of DJ was soon taken by Marcus, an experienced part time disc jockey, who immediately began playing a mix of Eirian and Legionite songs as per request. The two gaffers, as well as some players were soon positioned at the darts board, with Telleau immediately dominating the others, even managing to capture a bullseye within no time
Kevin Taylor placed his drink on the nearby table and lined his shot up with his cue, bouncing a ball into the corner pocket. "Hey, Welcome!". He said, High-fiving Kowalski and sipping his drink. "You wanna join me in pool? Fair warning: I am as good as pool as I am at soccer". He laughed as one of his teammates, Devin Porter, put a dart into the wall instead of the dart board. "That's why you're a defender, Devin. Your aim sucks!". He shouted, earning a laugh from his teammates and the White Tigers.
Kowalski took a spare cue and joined the group, soon being introduced to the other players at the table. Although he wasn't as good as he'd liked at pool, Kowalski had a wicked curve shot that would often get him out of precarious situations. He chalked up and waited patiently for his turn, while cracking jokes with the boys and sipping his Mountain-Breeze Cocktail.
Stevenson soon got the hang of the game as well as the weight of the darts, and began to get some decent throws in, even hitting a double-20 soon enough, garnering praise from the others.
Telleau laughed and clapped. "Nice shot. He examined the position his opponent landed. "Impressive". Meanwhile, Taylor and Kowalski continued playing pool, Taylor buying his new friend a refill when his drink ran down. "Dang, I really needed this". Kevin said, putting some more chalk on the tip of his cue. "This is so much fun after an exhausting game".
"You're right, it feels great to unwind after the game. I can't believe that only a few hours ago we were drenched in sweat in front of 60,000+ spectators." Kowalski said while leaning on his cue, ever so slightly. He took a nice sip of his drink, Eirian Spēce which he had never tried before. The drink travelled down his throat, leaving a warm and relaxing sensation behind. He looked at Taylor then at the drink, "My goodness, this Spēce is amazing! How have I never tried it before?"
Taylor Smiled. "Eirians like to keep the good stuff hidden. That way, it's more rewarding when you find it for yourself". He chuckled. "I'm just kidding. I'm not sure why they don't market it much outside Eiria. Eiria has a talent for alcohol". He took another sip of his drink and shrugged. "Though, I gotta say, this is pretty good as well. Thanks for the Jersey, by the way".
Kowalski chuckled, "No problem, I always try and get an opposition player's jersey when I play so that I can add it to my collection. I don't think I've seen Spēce in the clubhouse before, the owners must've stocked up on multinational drinks for the IDUFC." Kowalski began to inspect his cue, rolling it on his hand and feeling its smooth veneer on his palm. "I'll definitely go to Eiria on vacation this year, and bring back a crateful of Spēce."
"If you can get it past border control, that is. And that's a big if". He twirled his cue in his hand like a baton or staff. "I'm gonna regret all of this tomorrow. I'll need a boatload of coffee to get myself up. But it's worth it".
"I have my ways". Kowalski said while grinning smugly, "And I have quite the story about the last time I was here, when I had just won the Legionite Premier League with Real Verdesia, only a few weeks ago. Myself and the boys began drinking right after we got off the pitch, I even had to attend an interview while slightly wasted. So we get here and we just get completely hammered, we literally drank half of the clubhouse's stock. The next day I wake up, in the bed of a pickup truck in the parking lot and my head is pounding aggressively. I get up and immediately throw up into an adjacent bush and begin to move towards the clubhouse. I get in and the place is trashed, like even that chandelier over there was already on the floor. I see the silhouette of a man at the end of that hall over there, so I whistled because I have quite the loud whistle, and I noticed the silhouette slow down and turn towards me. I realize that it's Carl Morrison." Morrison, as if summoned, joined the conversation. "Hey Carl, how about you finish the story?" Kowalski said, laughing almost uncontrollably "Sure, why not, so Chris and I make eye contact, and I immediately realize that Chris is only in his boxers. We decided to try and hitch a ride to my house. We flag down this Rhandi fella who's transporting animals in a pickup. There's only room for one though in the cab, so we play rock-paper-scissors and Chris loses!! So the entire way to my house, Chris had to sit with a bunch of sheep and goats while in his boxers." The room bursts into laughter, with even the DJ pausing the song to allow everyone to react to the story.
"So, I hope we don't end up like that, coffee's much better" Christian said, in between laughter.
"Wow. That does not sound fun!". He said, laughing. Well, we had one where we were Partying after beating Serenity FC, and we had invited the Serenity Team, and some close friends and relatives of players. We had a good time, everyone was Very Drunk. The next morning, I wake up to screaming from upstairs. Turns out, Jack Kelley, over there..." he pointed at an Eirian sitting at the bar. "Turns out Jack had slept with our coach's sister, who had attended the party. That was an absolute mess, and we got the hell out of there fast".
The room soon turned its attention to Jack, with laughter as well as sympathy being directed at the Argonaut defender. "Hey Jack, come over and play some pool with us, we have a spare cue," Christian said happily.
Jack obliged, laughing about the story. "Man, your coach was fuming. I nearly launched myself out the window to escape. That was a couple years ago, and I can still hear his shouting". Kevin patted him on the back. "It's cool. Now you're playing for the national team. I don't recommend making it a repeat experience, however". They laughed and Jack nervously glanced at Coach Stevenson, wondering how the Legionite would react.
Coach Stevenson, amused by the story, hid his expression under a façade of anger, sensing an opportunity to prank the slightly intoxicated players. He strode over towards the pool table and placed his hand on Kelley's shoulder. The manager, although determined was also slightly drunk could not maintain a straight face. The room reignited with laughter.
Taylor accidentally inhaled his drink, coughing and sputtering while laughing in between. Kelley's face went totally white and he seized up, causing everyone to have another round of laughter. "Oh boy, you're in for it now!" Thomas Salze shouted while laughing. While coughing and laughing, Taylor tripped and spilled the remainder of his drink on Kowalski. "Oh, Shoot! Damn it! Sorry!".
Kowalski offered his hand to Taylor while laughing, "No worries Kev, I'll get you another glass from the bar"
"Thanks". He took his and and stumbled to the bar, as the shots of Spēce seemed to be kicking in. "Sorry again. God, I'm going to regret this many drinks so much tomorrow. How well are you fairing?".
I'm still kicking, fortunately. I'll probably be wasted within the hour though," Kowalski said, while stumbling into the bar. Mustering up the best Eirian accent he could, he asked "Sir, what shall we be having today?"
He laughed. "Ow, My stomach is hurting from laughing". He replied in a Legionite Accent of the same quality "I don't know, my good sir. What's the best you have?".
Kowalski laughed and looked around, "From the looks of it sir, I can make you the IDU special."
"Sounds Excellent. Will you be drinking as well, my good sir?".
"Ah yes, sir. I can't let you enjoy it by yourself!".
"Why thank you good sir. Here". Taylor gestured to the seat next to him. "This spot is opened once you are finished, good sir".
"Thank you, sir." Kowalski begun his masterpiece, finding all the ingredients he required with ease. Soon the specials were ready. Kowalski slid a glass towards Taylor and another towards the spot where he would sit. He disappeared under the counter and re-emerged behind Taylor, scaring him and almost causing him to fall his drink. Taylor playfully smacked his back and waited as the high flyer took his seat.
"I'm actually about to get married, in September. I also have a son and a daughter is on the way. I'm heavily involved in humanitarian work across the IDU but especially in in Zerphique. I learnt how to fly recently and I sometimes hunt deer when go to my winter house. How about you?"
"Oh, Congrats! I have a teaching degree, and plan to teach when I retire from football. I spend my extra time volunteering at charities to help the homeless, and I started my own charity program to raise money for food for the homeless. I'm also an avid Swimmer, and hopefully when I start teaching the school has an opening for a swim coach.".
"Woah, that's interesting. I see we're both into helping the less fortunate, that's quite the coincidence. What subject did you train to teach?".
"Global Studies, actually. I have always been fascinated by the Global Stage".
"Global Studies is quite the fun subject to learn, one of my favorites back when I was a nerdy kid in school. And being a coach as well as a teacher is automatically much cooler. I once wished to be a teacher, like most other kids, but fate took me otherwise".
"That's too bad. But hey, it's never too late". Taylor took another sip of his drink. "Or you could be a bartender. This is quite good!".
"I guess it never is, really. Man, I really outdid myself with this cocktail".
"Yeah". Taylor Yawned. "Well, I'm crashing hard. I may head to the hotel soon". He looked around and saw a few of the guys shared his sentiment, and one was passed out in the bar. "We should set up a betting pool for the tournament!".
Kowalski looked at Zervas, who had passed out at the DJ both and his Manager who had curled up in a corner, snoring away."Yeah, it looks like we'll definitely have to head out soon. We should definitely make a betting pool, I'm sure we can set that up easily." He looked around the room again. "I hope our designated drivers can drive though." Kowalski said.
"Me too". He wrote a number on the back of a knapkin. "Here's my phone number so we can coordinate the pool if we are in different places. If you're ever in Geminus, feel free to drop by! I think I'm going to head in". He finished his drink. "Thanks so much for the fun time though!".
"Definitely dude, tonight was awesome, I'll call you tomorrow morning to check if you're holding up well." Kowalski finished his drink and arranged the two glasses on the counter. "can you walk," Kowalski asked, laughing.
"Well, I can try. Can you?".
"Barely, although I can manage. So what are we gonna do about the guys passed out around the room?".
"Well, we get the conscious guys to help us. Although...." He counted the Unconscious guys, Including both Eirian Managers, Lee Seul-ki and Janus Jansons, and all four Eirian strikers. "We may have to make a few trips from the bus to the bar to get them all".
"Let's get to work then. We should also call the drivers". Kowalski stumbled out of the clubhouse, leaving Taylor and the others to start.
The Other two Eirian Goalies grabbed the Managers and took them outside to the bus. Taylor grabbed Janis and guided a half-conscious Lee into the bus as the rest of the Eirian team filed out, sleeping teammates in tow.
Within only a few minutes, Kowalski, Taylor and co. managed to move all of their teammates into their respective buses, ready to head to their respective hotels.
Taylor came over to Kowalski before boarding the Eirian bus, patting him on the back. "Thanks for an awesome evening! You got everyone on board?".
"Yeah, how about you guys?".
"Yep, Fully Locked and Loaded".
Kowalski embraced his new friend, "We should definitely do this again. Godspeed to you guys, sleep tight!"
"You too!".
