Passed:Restrictions On Child Labor
#1

Quote: Restrictions on Child Labor
A resolution to improve worldwide human and civil rights.

Category: Human Rights
Strength: Strong
Proposed by: The Dourian Embassy

Description: Understanding that certain nations may wish to employ or allow the employment of children;

Realizing that employment in certain industries can cause a child's well being and future to be in jeopardy;

Believing that it is morally reprehensible for any state or governing body to force children into any situation that is likely to cause them harm;

Further believing that certain basic protections should be provided to all children;

The World Assembly thus:

(A)Defines a 'minor' as a person below the legal age of majority as defined in their nation.

(B) Bans the employment of minors in:
(1) work in which they are subject to physical or psychological abuse,
(2) work in which they are required to be in physical locations that would be damaging to their health,
(3) work which involves dangerous machinery, dangerous equipment or dangerous tools,
(4) work which involves the manual transport or handling of heavy loads,
(5) work in environments exposing them to temperatures, noise levels, or vibrations damaging to their health,
(6) work in environments that may expose them to hazardous substances, agents and/or processes,
(7) work which would preclude the pursuit of a full-time education, such as work for long hours or work where they are unreasonably confined to the premises of the employer.

© Bans the participation of minors in armed conflict.

(D) Bans anyone under the age of consent from engaging in sexually explicit acts as a form of employment.

The basic principals behind this resolution are acceptable to my government and we've voted in favour. We welcome any dissenting opinions and can be swayed.

Yay! Something at vote!

The government of Jagera stands in favour. There are a couple areas that may be of minor issue (B7 doesn't recognize that full time education may be on the job if for a practical education, and D doesn't account for an unbearably low age of consent and I don't think it belongs), but as these won't be at issue in Jagera, we have no problems.

Schnauzervolk would be concerned about very young children being forced to work and that desn't seem to be covered by this proposal.

We'll abstain for now.

Agreed.

I guess I expected a child labor resolution to ban child labor...
#6

Hmm, its essentialy OK.
#7

Its an intresting proposal. I find that though it has a few shortcomings, those can be addressed in later proposals that are more specific in nature. I think that this proposal is a good start.
#8

I think it's too flawed at this point for a yes vote, so LL-C votes no.

Good catch. I was thinking about issues with "age of majority", but figured this probably needed to be here because of differences in some nation's inhabitants. I didn't notice, however, that this doesn't "ban" child labour, just restricts its use in dangerous occupations. However, as Gerainia says, I feel this could still be a start, and continue my support.

With the current trend going towards supporting the resolution I shall vote in favor of it. I would also like to say that this is probably our most active debate in awhile.

Passed.

This resolution has passed.
